  1. The short movies were mid, didn't particularly love any of them As for the documentaries, these 3 were my faves: Fire of Love (about 2 vulcanologists or whatever the word is), All that breathes (birds hospital in india) and Navalny (that russian dude that was arrested). The other 2 weren't as interesting IMO. I even thought "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" was kinda messy About the short documentaries: Elephant Whisperers and Hallout outsold. Lowkey prefer the short documentaries over the long ones, on average
  2. Oscar best picture nominees short short reviews “All Quiet on the Western Front" - already talked aout it... great war movie. I liked it mainly because the action happens on the german side of WW1. Main actor deserved a nomination IMO. It coveys the idea that everyone in a battlefield is a victim, regardless of which side one falls “Avatar: The Way of Water" - didn't watch it “The Banshees of Inisherin" - it' a very "what the fuck is happening" kind of movie, it has this quiet camp quality to it. Took me a while to get the metaphor of the irish civil war though rsrsrs but after getting it, everything made sense. It's just really well done overall, unique movie as a whole “Elvis" - this kind of biopic about decadence, fame, etc isn't really my style, honestly. BUT, it was interesting because I wasn't familiar with Elvis' life or even how damn racist the US were at the time. The edition was nice as well. Barely recognized Tom hanks when he first appeared “Everything Everywhere All at Once" - already talked about it, even had a discussion with nana rsrs... we loved it “The Fabelmans" - solid drama. Pretty sure Spielberg got inspiration from himself ah. A film about a boy's passion of filmmaking. Idk what else to say, it was cute, heartfelt and i enjoyed it “Tár" - imma be honest, I had a huge brainfart in the first 15 minutes and was in this dazed state for the rest of the movie. Dying inside, really. It's my own fault, though - trying to understand the pretentious af dialogue, that was originally designed to make you feel like an outsider. I can't say I enjoyed it since I didn't, but I appreciate what it was trying to do, because it's truly a good movie that touches on subjects like cancel culture. It's dense as fuck, but good. And don't get me started on Cate Blanchett's performance wheww “Top Gun: Maverick" - i don't like Tom Cruise or his action movies... sunday afternoon feels “Triangle of Sadness" - if you like White Lotus, you're gonna like this one. By the way, make sure you're NOT eating while watching the movie, thank me later. Just thinking about some scenes... ugh. It's FUN, especially if you watch it with friends. Chaotic in the best way possible “Women Talking" - i thought it was gonna be boring but it was really interesting, reminded me of 12 Angry Men. It's filled with engaging dialogue and arguments, that makes you go "oh, that's a good point". The cultish setting itself is interesting. That's the best adjective I can give, interesting. Interesting movie My favorite was Everything everywhere all at once
  3. The sampling oh no... i don't like this
  4. Ma jingxiang evil edit did the opposite effect because people are not buying it, he might even rise a bit tbh
  5. Actually missing 6 of 53 Avatar Blonde Empire of Light Batman Babylon Bardo For best song I only heard the songs though rsrsrs
  6. Just finished watching every movie, short movie, documentary, short documentary, animation movie and short animation nominated at the oscars (sans Avatar that isn't available yet) and some random movies for other categories There's only like 5 movies (out of 52 nominated at something ig?) I didn't watch Oscars binge was interesting for sure, might post my thoughts tomorrow if I feel like it rsrsrs Brain is too tired
  7. Those assholes at Mnet ain't slick by releasing the fancams only next week, on the same day the voting ends... we see you mnet, we see your manipulation tactics RIP everyone performing on episode 7 (aside tomboy), have a safe flight/bus ride back home Thank god mnet picks and my picks are pretty much the same
  8. Book reviews~~~ The Alienist (Machado de Assis) You can easily read the Alienist in one sitting. It has like 50 pages, more or less, and short chapters. I’d rather call it a short story, actually. It’s similar to One flew over the cuckoo’s nest, at least the movie version. At the same time, it’s completely different. The story is about this doctor dude who builds an asylum in a brazilian village, assuming that people with mental illnesses are those who stray from being “normal”. What is being normal exactly? You can kinda see where it’s going. In short, it’s okay to not be okay. Not gonna give any more spoilers, the book is too short for that. Fun, low commitment book to read, available on public domain Anna Karenina (Lev Tolstoi) Why do russians write so much? Anna Karenina is a long book. If you read around 10 chapters a day, you can finish it in 3 weeks - but it’s still half the size of War and Peace (that is on one of my shelves, so I will read it eventually. It’s by the same author). Anna Karenina, despite what the name suggests, has 2 main characters: Anna and Levin. While I was reading the book, I would wonder why the book was called Anna Karenina because Levin always felt more present, but by the end I got it (I’m a bit slow at noticing this kind of stuff) - they complement each other. The characterization was amazing. Every character feels real, they all have their quirks, faults and good moments. I think everyone can have different opinions on each one of them. For example, you might dislike Anna and Wronsky, or you can love them and dislike Levin. That’s the heart of the book IMO, the characters. You get inside their heads and know them better than maybe even your close friends. Quite fascinating. I personally really enjoyed Levin’s parts, I thought it was fun reading through his existencial crisis and his dramatic self. The book is similar to Madame Bovary by Flaubert, that I reviewed last time. Difference is, Madame Bovary's length is less than half of Anna Karenina. If you like one of these 2, it’s hard to dislike the other. Anna Karenina has more characters and offers the other side of the coin. One is about french society, the other one about the russian. The writing styles are both realistic. Anna Karenina is perhaps easier to read because the chapters are shorter, even if the actual book is way longer. Is the book worth your time? I’ll say yes A Room with a View (E. M. Forster) - requested by @love We stan public domain content. As I didn’t have a copy, I read a free digital version. Since this was a request, my review will go deeper. *SPOILER ALERT* The language is super accessible. This was the 2nd book I read in english (the first one being A Christmas Carol, that I didn’t feel like reviewing); it was easy to read when it comes to vocabulary and style. Some terms seem a little dated, though, idk if authors still say "with their gayest faces" rsrsrs. But other than that, the prose aged better than Christmas Carol (that's the only book I can compare it to ok...) IMO The story is good to read on sunny days, because there's a sunny energy about it, ig from the descriptions. Daydream vibes. In the first part, our main girl Lucy and her insufferable friends were traveling and discovering Italy on holidays. It was giving White Lotus from the 19th century, as there’s also a social commentary going on and a death. The ideas are quite modern. There’s not a chapter where the elitism present in higher social classes isn’t criticised. Their irony and hypocrisy are there as well when the characters claim they are very forward, open and yadda yadda - it's similar to those gym bros who say they are feminists because they love their mothers while they trash every other girl they know, u see. Comparisions (indirectly) are often made between Lucy's mates and the Emersons to illustrate those points. Plenty of parallels. Lucy grows a lot between the 2 parts, especially during part 2. In part 1 Lucy was like Charlotte's puppet but in part 2 we see her fighting for her opinions. Even then, while she used to be under Charlotte's influence in Part 1, she is now under Cecil's in Part 2. Then, before breaking up her engagement, she's under George's. It's funny how she tries to free herself and gain independence only after being influenced by someone else. On chapter 9, we get the meaning of the book. Cecil is a room without a view to Lucy, and makes her feel literally like being in a room without a view: trapped by social rules; in a relationship where she can't go outside of the box let's say, without freedom. George on the other hand is the view itself, as he's the opposite of Cecil. His ways of expressing himself are spontaneous rather than calculated and he's a free soul that doesn't mind society and etiquette. Our edgy love interest is completely out there. The use of adjectives to describe George is also interesting. I can't remember anything in specific, but they were usually related to the outside, such as stars. Lucy girl is trapped even after breaking the engagement because girlie is lying to herself, wanting to be this "independent woman" for life when deep down she does want to marry someone. Thankfully Mr. Emerson puts some sense in her. He gave her the "don't worry so much and do what you really wanna do" talk. In the end, Lucy and George are in Italy again, now married, in a room with a view. In my head the room symbolizes the constraints of society and the view means freedom. Lucy is married and therefore under George's influence, but still manages to have a sense of freedom and independence. A toom with a view indeed. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and appreciate the recommendation snwhsjssj. The narrative itself is pretty ordinary and predictable considering that since the 19th century there have been thousands of "higher class girl and lower class boy fall in love but their friends disapprove and then (...)" stories. Well, you get what I mean and, if we're being fair, most novels are like this. What I did find interesting was how the power dynamics were narrated and how the easy to manipulate Lucy found her voice over the book. We enjoyed it yup, thank's love uwu Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) Out of the 3 books I read by Jane Austen, this is the one that screams “satire” the most to me. Maybe because of the title that spoils the irony of the characters? Or Mr. Collins and Mrs. Bennet characters as a whole? I was engaged with the characters. Out of the 3 jane austens this was IMO, and iirc, the one with the most psychological descriptions (which I enjoy). Tbh I have no idea how to review the book. A room with a view took all of my energy akwbs. Well, I liked the main characters and it's overall an easy, pleasant read. Wew
  9. I'm not surprised tbh, Love Killa was only hyped because it had popular trainees Meanwhile Tomboy team has both popularity AND talent
  10. These comparisons… soon ya’ll gonna Sehun looks like Morgan Freeman
  11. Zoom - it was FUN. Hyunbeen did really well, I even learned his name. I don't really like Ollie's rap as usual but other than that the performance was good. Keita, Wumuti and Haruto ate, the song fits them well. Idk what else to say, I enjoyed it Gang - for a team composed of leftovers it was pretty decent? On paper it's already good but the performance was still better than I expected, everyone did well. Great energy, it was FUN. Junhyeon only ab flashing that didn't make me cringe, how surprising. Hope they all go through next elimination episode because I wouldn't mind a junhyeon/junghyun/jeonghyeon dark horse (and i want jeonghyeon on Over Me). Only complaint I have is that the rap didn't sound that crisp? Not a korean speaker though Home - I dislike Home as a song but I'll still try to be unbiased. Big mistake on Jay's part to go to this team, he got overshadowed when he could easily shine in another team. Surprised Seungeon didn't have the most votes but I'm not mad about it. Jongwoo was the only one not giving church dude energy. Jay looked like a pastor. The other 2 were there. Vocals were decent though I didn't like the adlibs in the end of the song. This performance made me feel absolutely nothing rsrsrs I won't watch this ever again I fear Love Killa - Jiwoong's "I'm sorry did I make you anxious" was giving reporter reading his lines on the script. For an actor, he didn't act those lines very well. So far I think he's been stiff as a performer. Matthew didn't fit the vibe... at all. His vocals were alright, not good, just okay. I can actually see why Gyuvin had the most votes, based on the performance. He didn't have many lines but he did what he had to do with what he was given. Reminded me of Hyungwon. As for Seowon, he ate. Not a huge fan of his vocal color but he always gives his 100%, just the right level of energy. Meh performance as a whole (despite Gyuvin and Seowon doing well IMO), and it was lacking masculinity energy I fear Zoom > Gang >>> Love Killa >> Home
  12. Also surprised by the lack of jay stans given the reactions the users give to some posts... but I'm not disappointed
  13. The taste on this thread... isn't as bad as expected! Ofc it doesn't mean much because in what universe would honghai or ollie have more 1picks than Sung Hanbin? But it's interesting to know who everyone likes around here Lurkers, join us and let's chat, don't be shy
  14. Over Me is the best song based on the preview Supercharger is... bad
  15. As long as they're not annoying or untalented (so it's not too hard on him to lead them rsrs), anyone is fine I could already tell you my final 18 prediction but the 6 pick got me intrigued with who's gonna free fall... hope it's the My House dudes
  16. We don't care about concepts because Le Main Slayer can do everything, so we'll vote for the superior song
  17. Overdose review from memory Overdose - this is a top3 title track by the legends, classic kpop, idk what else to say. Actually, one of the best title tracks in kpop. Baekhyun ate. POP PERFECTION Moonlight - D.O. sounds so good, as always. Not my favorite ballad from exo and I prefer to watch concert videos of it rather than playing it on spotify. Still, it's AMAZING Thunder - the instrumental >>>>. Exo-M is the best version btw. CHILL CATCHY BOP Run - the way I never listen to this, it's one of like... 10 exo songs I don't listen to. A miss, SKIP Love, love, love - the studio version is good. But the concert version? It's on my top20 exo bsides, i fear. CONCERT VERSION OUTSOLD The album is a hmm 87/100 (run bringing the score down)
  18. Hacking scenes are pretty funny tbh
