Woke up extra early for some reason and saw this. To be fair to her, I thought this was about the best she can do. First, she makes no excuses and is not backing away from her lyrics. She knows that she did nothing wrong but she is apologizing for making SOME people uncomfortable. Second, as I have often said, K media esp some of the written magazines do some shitty things, intentionally and unintentionally. She knows that these allegations are barely strung together witch hunt and she had to make sure that she gives context to her comment and not give the media something that they can take apart and lift a word here and there. Give them too much and she might have as well as have signed up for death of her career. I would like for us to remember that this is a witch hunt and the less she says the better. While we may wish for grandstanding, I want her to be able to continue making music. I think she is aware of this fact more keenly than anyone else.

@miachu Based on the Loen pd's tweet, I would say that I don't think anyone in Loen ever thought that it was going to be this controversial. Like I said, the lyrics themselves can be explained away relatively easily esp after someone explained that the part about where ZeZe picked the flower from the tree (& why) and how ZeZe views himself as dirty. In any case, this witch hunt against IU is really tiring. I'll say one thing though. A lot of people have listened to her song and never considered it sexual in any way before pann started linking some crazy things together. It is truly disappointing how k-media is being driven by bunch of little girls/females on pann.

Interesting. I really need to get my hand on a copy of this book. Maybe I'll make a run to the library to check if there is a copy.

It won't work anyways. I think that a lot of those people need to grow up, experience life, and get more exposure to different things/views/perspectives what not. I choose to view it as those people are really rather too judgmental and they are being that way because they choose to. Whether it's out of willful ignorance, hatred, or whatever it is, I don't think that some of them will change until life gives them a hard knock.

Not at all. I actually enjoy reading these types of articles that show alternate views of art, freedom of expression and why so many people feel that they the right to dictate this process. I especially agree with "artist have again been hijacked and misrepresented by those who seem unable to tell the difference between actual, real life and fictional artifice; who are apparently dumbfounded by such elements as irony and social satire. Why should they have the power to deprive intelligent, rational viewers of engaging with “difficult†art?" This fits some of the OH users to the Tee esp those who can't "unable to tell the difference between actual, real life and fictional artifice". That k-publisher seriously had me raising both my eyebrows since people that are usually in the publishing industry understand this fact very well and usually are the ones who try to make sure that they give writers the "freedom of expression" and artistic license to write. How else would you get a book like Shades of Grey or that one book back 10 or 20 years which made an erotic novel out of Sleeping Beauty and what happens after she awakens. edit: bad examples those that i chose. maybe paul gauguin would have been a better example.

@popiah Thank you for the encouragement. I do think that there a lot of people who forget that these are real live people with families and they are precious daughters/grand-daughter/sister/niece/etc to someone. They never consider the pain they give to others. They just seem so twisted and hypocritical because they are probably never this harsh when judging themselves or their faves. @soojsooj that was a thought provoking article, esp the part that you edited. "while a work may sometimes challenge us or we may not agree with the artist’s point of view, a different perspective might be equally valid."

I think we're putting too much emphasis on what should be done. Just let the course run itself. I think that IU will address it but when is the real question. We can think whatever we like but it is ultimately up to Loen and IU. If I were her or company, I would prepare as much as possible for this event because they're only going to get one shot at this. I would rather they give this topic a serious consideration, understand the problem, then come out and make a statement vs making a hasty one and making it worse by coming out unprepared. Shrug ... I think it can definitely go one or the other here. She can either take this chance and gain a solid foothold onto the next level and turn this into an opportunity or they can stumble. As a fan, I would like to see IU rise above it and show them that they're wrong of course.

OMG @swirl900 Poor baby. Please go and do something. I recommend taking a walk, exercising, or just hanging out with your friend. I find that that generally helps me a lot when I have issues with sleeping.

YES!!!!! I couldn't agree more. My study was in the science area but even there you are encouraged to use your brains and figure things out for yourself. But I've always enjoyed some literary and modern cinema classes that I took and I can't ever remember anywhere where censorship has ever been endorsed or encouraged. I mean discoveries and innovation happen when you let creativity thrive but Korea seems to be of the mind to throttle that. :( That's sad. I knew that there is an enormous pressure to succeed and conform but not to this extent. Remember that sad article about Korean fashion and how literally everyone chases after the same thing once it becomes a trend? If this publisher is any indication, I worry for the future of Korea. I agree. Her songs are generally very heartwarming. I think that IU stepped outside her comfort zone and tried new things. I hope this unfortunate incident doesn't stop her musical growth. I am of the mind that IU could go much higher if she can over come this.

Gosh, I am seriously thinking that the world of kpop sometimes brings out the worst in all of us. I know that as soon as I disconnect from kpop, a lot of this disturbing aspects of that I see in kpop culture (inetz + knetz) disappear. Then when I step back in it feels like a whirlpool that just sucks you right in and you feel like you're stuck in that tide and getting dragged into the cess pit. This was one of the reason why I was absent from kpop for a very long time.

Let's just all calm down and see what happens next. I'm done trying to guess what will happen next. Korea is such a scary place sometimes. I mean this reminds me a lot of T-ara and Tablo incident where no one would believe them no matter what they said. In any case, here. Let's enjoy a good read that kpopalyse provided: https://kpopalypse.wordpress.com/2015/11/04/understanding-plagiarism-and-song-ownership-issues-so-you-dont-look-like-a-fuckhead-on-the-internet/#more-6722 I like his title, "Understanding Plagiarism and Song Ownership Issues So You Don't Look Like a F***head on the Internet".

Yes. This is becoming really tragic. I do believe that she will have to explain the art, as well as the story it self for those who are not familiar with it, and the context under which she applied the word sexy because context is everything and right now there's too much false information, misleading and misstated things floating around. She need to stick to the facts and her the reason behind her interpretation. I know she is busy but she and Loen need to speak out. Sigh. But this will probably not sway those who who are firmly against her like some of the OH folks.
-
I doubt it. The publisher gave the pan girls reach legitimacy that it did not have before. Pann users are looked down upon but a publisher is different. Which is why Loen and IU will need to do something. Not sure what but something.
-
Right. I always feel uncomfortable when I see anyone, perhaps more so when I see a publisher, take this stance and issue a statement like the one they issued ... Freedom of expression is only allowed with the permission of the public. Blah. This makes me wonder how censored the Korean version of the ZeZe is. I mean I read that there is even a part where he thinks about killing someone in the book? Blue feel free to confirm or deny for the Brazilian version.

Right?!? The hypocrisy. In any case, I found this fabulous write-up of her plagiarism issue and who owns what rights in a song. https://kpopalypse.wordpress.com/2015/11/04/understanding-plagiarism-and-song-ownership-issues-so-you-dont-look-like-a-fuckhead-on-the-internet/#more-6722 Wouldn't some of those brilliant netz flip if they read this?!? Esp about how much rights B. Spears has to even her own song.

heh ... It looks like it's back in top 10. All this without any promotion. All joking aside, I guess it's true that saying when it pours it really pours. But let's all remember that after the rain, there's always the peaceful time and beautiful rainbow to compensate for it. I'm wishing for that right now. I never really believed in PMS curse, but I may have to change my mind after this.

That was the unfortunate result of the 2012 scandal. She became extra careful after seeing a lot of what she said being taken out of context. There is almost 100% chance that this will happen if she responds. While fans would like it, I am not sure that it will make a difference in the short term.

Maybe I need to step away from the electronic devices because I am feeling confused by this whole day from beginning to now. I'm confused by the publishers statement since I absolutely disagree with the publisher's view. This would not have gained the traction that it is gaining without the statement from them, ridiculous as it may be esp that part about freedom of expression needing permission. I'm also mad at this bandwagon mentality that is currently going around. I'm disgusted at some of the people who seems to enjoy wrecking other people's life and accomplishments. I'm also absolutely aghast at how some people are delighting in someone else's misfortune.

Blue. It's what I think, not what she will do. I personally can't see any way that she'll come out of this that will satisfy the antis. There is no satisfying them period. They'll pick and pick at her words for the littlest details that they can use against her. That is why I think that they may go this route but this is just a conjecture.
-
I don't think they'll go along that route. I think they're more likely to address other aspects of it. I always thought it looked innocuous but I guess even that is subject to interpretation.
-
@blue I can stand behind IU's lyrics and her interview even but the more I look at the art, the more I can understand where some people might have some misconceptions. My feelings about this does not change but I think that Loen and IU needs to say something but they're almost in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. I mean antis will not really listen to anything that she has to say no matter what she says. I'm almost 99.99% certain that they'll take whatever she'll say and twist it around like they did with T-ara. I'm really not certain what is the best course of action here.

I really didn't pay attention to the picture at first until this whole thing started. I was looking it over really carefully and I realized that those may not be fishnet stockings but leggings or hoses as my mom likes to refer to them as. My mom refers to the hoses but I think the current term for them is leggings. In any case, even I could see why they were insisting it was fishnet but I don't think that those professionals who drew it meant it to be fishnet stockings on closer examination. I think perhaps like a jester like costume like you suggested makes more sense. edit: I still don't know why they deviated so much from her original idea for ZeZe for the art.
-
By the way, this was many (long) time ago. I asked this of my mother, youngest of many children in her family, if she remembered seeing any of her nephews in hoses in pre-school/kindergarten and she said yes. She even had pictures.
-
Just to give us another perspective, I did not realize it until now but little children (at least while I was there) used to wear hoses, including male children. Kind of like this but much less sophisticated. Just something else to chew on.
