I think the rap really strikes me too because I kinda understand Korean...so that makes a whole lot of difference lol. The whole Who You team is just really legendary tbh. Turtle Ship ain't got nothing against that. People say this season's stages were lackluster but I feel we got more legendary stages this time around than last season.

Yeah but weren't people like Youngmin, Donghyun and Daehwi former JYP trainees too? Skill-wise, Woo Jin Young is still in a different league than them. There are just people who belong to a different level talent-wise. Nah, I think Woojin's rap needs a hell lot of polishing. Dance seems to be where he shines best, but that skill is really common in K-Pop. His main ace is his stage presence, tbh. But frankly speaking his rap is so-so (like I said, I find it clumsy), his vocals are certainly not vocalist level (more like the typical "he sings stable" idol kind of singing) but his dance is up there. Not to say he can't improve but it will probably take time. The whole noona-killer charm gets old fast especially when it comes to K-Pop experience so he has to step up especially if he makes the final group. Very few flower boy trainees this season have the well roundedness of Wee Woo (and he isn't even the typical "stable" well rounded...I'd classify his dance and rap as above average, give him a few more months and he'll be a sight to behold)

Yeah but his company isn't some mid-tier agency that would be unable to land him roles. How many people his age have worked with people like Ma Dongseok? Not many. Even if he won't get lead roles, he'll get stable job opportunities which already makes him better than 90% of aspiring actors in Korea.

To this day I will never understand why Lee Youjin had to do this show He was already working on Chungmuro-level projects with Korean A-listers, is under a top actors agency, PD101 was seriously a step down/demote in terms of his status tbh

It was actually the opposite: Hwanwoong actually hung out with a lot of the trainees regardless of their ranks. He was one of the 'main dance teachers' in camp. His intro was so unique I actually thought he was going to get screentime. But his personality is very non-confrontational and MNet kinda dislikes that (see Shape of You team)

PD101 trainee profiles usually put in their training time (not really training, more of how long they've been signed with) with their current companies. But with Woo Jin Young, he just doesn't feel like a trainee at all. Still shocked to see how young he was too. That only means one thing - he will only keep on improving. Imagine what a monster he will be three years down the road. But Youngmin actually feels very idol-y to me. I like him, but he's probably one of those few guys I don't find the long-term prospects very promising (he doesn't have what it takes to be an independent musician like Jun K, his rap is so-so so that path is closed too, he doesn't have an actor face, he doesn't seem to be multilingual etc)

I was actually thinking Kim Sanggyun is also a good shoo-in for rapper, but there's something in his image that clashes hard with the following boys who have high potential getting in Top 11: Jihoon, Daniel, Ong, Samuel, Guanlin. I just can't imagine Sanggyun co-existing with them in a group, presence-wise, while Wee Woo might be a better foil. J-Pop is just amazing with coming up with idol line-ups. The #stantalent brigade isn't as wild in that side too so there's a lot more variety. For example: just look at Arashi. That's how magic is done, folks lol. I actually think SVT is a group that follows the Johnny's model a lot - look at how varied the members are...and they're successful. That formula works. It has worked for 50 years so it's pretty much science at this point. AKB definitely got pointers from that, corrected the wrong doings from the Momusu experience and voila. The thing with K-Pop is they're still discovering the magic of a balanced line up. Take for instance: BTS on their own aren't really the top talented idols. They don't even have a wow vocalist in that team, their top visual (Jin) isn't considered the ultimate visual in K-Pop standards and their dancing can honestly be pulled off by other K-Pop idols if given the same choreography. But they achieved a certain balance among the member chemistry that makes it work, a chemistry only formed when those boys are thrown in together. If you look at other successful K-Pop groups, this factor is pretty consistent as well (see the amazing change that happened when EXO-M and K were combined for example). Lineups are crucial - you can very well have your bias in a group and end with a DIA/Gugudan situation. Okay have you heard of the Jihoon Curse? LOL

Exactly what I meant. Someone with an actual flair for a certain skill wouldn't struggle as hard as Youngmin did with rapping. You just know his skills were acquired unlike WJY or HMH or even Wee Woo (who would have thought) who obviously have it ingrained in them. I was watching the reaction shots of ep 6 and 7 and Youngmin was still practicing his rap while the other boys were enjoying the performances. It doesn't come naturally for him. "Give him time to improve his rap" - sounds fair enough, but doesn't negate the fact that dancing is his forte, not rapping. He would have easily slayed if he picked a dance team but he probably wanted to challenge himself too. There were actually a lot of skilled rappers at the start of the program but a lot of them didn't have the star factor to back it up.

That's why I said this season is really weird. We barely heard from the girls who didn't make Top 11 last year (save for IBI, but even that sparsely so) but this season is looking more and more like American Idol with the eliminated trainees shining in their own paths

Woo Jin Young gained heaps of stans the moment that fancam was released tbh TBH, he'll probably be in SMTM a year or 2 from now. Can you believe he hasn't even been training for a year? He's just gifted and in a completely different league skill-wise the whole Who You team were tbh

Yeah, but I feel he'll get a lot of support if he drops. People will actually panic if he drops because the Korean fandom had already 'assigned' him as the leader of the future group. I can imagine fans of some top ranking trainees donating some days of their onepick to Jonghyun if he drops.

Meh, big Woojin's rap is pretty clumsy and Youngmin doesn't have the natural flair for it, which is weird since they hail from a hiphop company. I'm actually quite surprised seeing how long they've trained and how the qualities of their raps were. Their raps need a lot of hard work so they should just stick to dancing. It's just not their forte. It's true a group needs only one rapper, but this group has 11 members so two rappers will balance things out. I'm also keen to see Sewoon/Jaehwan spit some bars since good vocalists tend to make really good rappers (they usually have a good sense of beat and flow)

Nah Guanlin and Seonho are both REALLY raw, all the more they need foils to cover up. I speak Korean and Guan Lin's Korean is pretty awkward especially for rap. Korean fans would hunt him down if he didn't have that face. Woo Jin Young is 90% gone so I honestly feel with the current boys we have only Wee Woo has that spit fire feel in rapping. JR's rap is deep and heavy, so another rapper with the opposite of that dynamic is the perfect foil. Not a huge fan of Wee Woo but his stage with Ha Minho and Woo Jin Young impressed me so hard - he could hold his own against those two amazing rappers, it's crazy. Not to mention he has great vocals and dance too (BiL avengers team) He's a calm, introverted all rounder...something this current lineup is heavily lacking. Park Woojin has fiery stage presence but he's not really as well-rounded as people point him out to be. His rap needs a lot of work (it lacks flow, confidence and conviction) and his vocals are meh to say the least. His only ace is his dancing which is top notch. I knew my normal objective side will really come out fast once Park Sungwoo was gonna be eliminated lol guys this is the real me lmao

I remember being online for the finale livestream and a lot of the people were actually really happy with the lineup, saying they complemented each other well except for Yeunjung In this sense, MNet's push helped because it added two crucial members to the team - Nayoung (at that point there wasn't really an obvious leader material among the girls like we have now with JR) and Chungha (the dance line was mainly Yoojung-Mina who were young). This also helped balance off the team age-wise because if not, it would have been Sejeong unnie and her dongsaengs. There was also a lack of rappers because no one was exposed yet at that time that Yoojung & Mina were potential rap goddesses
