Blegh, those kinds of people are impossible to have a real conversation. They know they can't engage with facts, so it's all ad hominem attacks and bullying to run you out. I don't even bother going into forums where that kind of behavior prevails. Sorry you had to hear that. I've seen some of those NyongTory things that did raise my eyebrows, so I wouldn't discount them being a thing in some way. I totally agree some things are hard to tell whether they're kidding or serious (and there is the time-honored strategy of telling the truth but saying it like a joke, which makes it harder). There are other moments though where there's nothing to suggest the idol was making a joke (again, like Lee Joon saying he's had boyfriends, or that actress saying she has "a homosexual disposition" in an interview), so people saying "they're obviously only kidding" just isn't appropriate. Like with idols doing fanservice, I think jokes like that are usually pretty obvious. Also in general, you have to look at the big picture and the totality of their interactions, not just base it on one moment. If you did that, everyone would be dating everyone. Edit: Another thing to remember is that idols probably do get crushes on each other fairly often. That doesn't necessarily mean they ever actually date though, but you still might be picking up on real feelings, at least from one of them.

Even American entertainment media in recent years has referred to women caught kissing as "gal pals" sharing a "friendship kiss" This is why I get so annoyed these days when straight people talk about not assuming anyone's sexuality or not taking "stereotypes" into account. It's basically heteronormativity wrapped up in a kind of self-righteous pseudo-progressivism, that boils down to just assuming everyone is straight until proven otherwise (and that proof apparently needs to be saying the words, "I am gay" while crying in an interview or something). Honestly, if you see someone, you think they're gay/bi/pan, and they turn out to be straight, that really doesn't hurt LGBT+ people. Assuming everyone is straight does. I agree, though the thing is, they have outright said it, multiple times. People just don't take them seriously and assume they must be joking. Sometimes I wonder what it's going to take for an idol to officially come out and be believed, considering how many idols have said very blatant things (like Lee Joon saying he's had boyfriends, for example) that just get brushed off or laughed at like a hilarious joke. (Wasn't there an actress who said in interview something like, "Do I have a homosexual disposition? Yes, I suppose I do," and it was ignored for like eight years? Then an article brought it up like, "Who knows if she was serious~~~") The same thing actually still happens in the west too. I saw some article the other day about a TV show, mentioning a male character who had a husband, and the article described it as "implying" he might be gay. Also, while I definitely agree that fans should be more aware of how the entertainment industry manipulates things, I feel like people sometimes overestimate how calculated an idol's every action is. They're not given a script for everything they do and say on stage, and they're just not that good as actors to fake every interaction to that degree. Honestly I feel like when they do intentional fanservice, it's usually pretty obvious. I just think there needs to be balance between questioning the industry's agenda and listening to what idols are actually saying.

There's a reason their company pushes an image like that Anyway, not to make this all about ships, I just think it's interesting how so many people can think it's friendship/fanservice despite the kind of receipts they have, unless people just haven't seen them. To me, it shows how kpop companies' strategy of promoting/allowing couples while still keeping everyone officially in the closet does kind of work. Their interactions become so normalized that a couple like them can go around literally saying that they're dating (as they have, multiple times), and no one takes them seriously. Also, ~whatever their relationship is~ it's definitely not one-sided. Donghae is more expressive, sure, but I really think that's just because Eunhyuk is more reserved (also it's hard to compete with Donghae's constant, "I can't live with you" declarations, so). I posted a bunch of gifs a few pages back of him acting jealous over Donghae. Why would he do that if it were one-sided? Yup. Let's reminisce about these best bros' jealousy when others threaten their epic bro-love I don't know, I'm always baffled at people still thinking it's all fanservice and whatnot. We've seen Donghae in dramas, and he's not that good of an actor. Besides, there are a lot of instances where they didn't even know there was a camera, as well as times where other members tried to stop them, which is a huge red flag imo. Maybe it's like how so many people can think Jackson's straight, because of how blatant he is in his interactions with men, as in, "If he were really gay/bi/pan, he would be hiding it." But like...Heechul? He's incredibly blatant with men, but no one here doubts that he's really gay. I honestly think a lot of it comes down to the fact that neither Donghae or Eunhyuk (or Jackson) are really effeminate--and next to all the flower boys, that makes them seem straight?--even while Eunhyuk's out there repeatedly calling Donghae his girlfriend or wife, Donghae calls himself Eunhyuk's wife, and apparently this was a conversation (I can't find the source on this, so grain of salt): Also, one more thing because I can:

Honestly they're the one couple I feel (basically) 100% sure is actually real. I'm kind of surprised they're talked about so little, especially because there are so many years of material to look at. .............holy shit From what I've seen, I don't necessarily think Kyungil is gay, though I feel like his response when Yijeong said Kyungil was his ideal type kind of sums it up: "As for me, I like girls. Still, I like someone who likes me" (I looked it up, and that was the translation. Correct me if I'm wrong). Assuming he was telling the truth, that to me implies Bi-leaning towards women, and I think the cute maknae would be just the type of boy that type of guy would go for, you know? He's certainly all over Yijeong a lot.

So what do you all think of Kyungil and Yijeong from History? I don't know much about the group yet, but I've seen some pretty...interesting interactions between those two. I don't know enough about them to be a shipper or anything. Some of their stuff is just pretty eyebrow-raising in how blatant it is. What do you guys think?

I know. I mean, I understand the logic of wanting to test the waters to avoid backlash, and obviously the companies are thinking about their bottom line, but eventually people are going to have to just go for it and push through the bullshit, or things are never going to change. You can't just wait for society to magically become accepting. Attitudes here in America have only changed as much as they have in recent years because people stuck their necks out and worked for it (and a lot of it, I think, due to more public figures coming out and normalizing LGBT identities). I know kpop is a business, but they have such an influence; it would be great to see them use that for good here.
