The good news is that they have improved significantly since the 2001-2014 time period, and they seem to be improving at a decent rate: http://nwww.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20190217000110 Either way, it's good to see more articles about it. -

I definitely agree that we should be mindful of stereotypes, and that most gay/bi men are pretty gender conforming (both in Korea and western countries). Though, I don't think we should dismiss gender non-conformity as a possible indicator of not-straight identity, since it's definitely more common among gay/bi people than straight people. Also, you can definitely see it through Korean youtube too. For example: (Yunho is a drag queen, and their channel features quite a few other Korean drag queens) I also just thought this was kind of interesting: -

Well I think we were just confused at the idea that MVs like Heart Attack weren't intended to be gay, when it seemed pretty explicitly about a romantic crush on a girl. Still, I'm pretty sure everyone here appreciates her warm words of support. -

I was confused about this too, like what else would she be "yearning" for? A gal pal?? It kind of reminds me of romantic friendships and Boston marriages women had in the 1800s, where women would write each other romantic letters and even have courtship rituals that were pretty much exactly the same as male/female couples. But it still wasn't considered gay. Sigh, straight culture is so weird. -

I know a lot of people (including myself) have talked about forming friend groups where everyone identified as straight/cis, only for most of them to have come out as lgbt several years later, so it can definitely happen. Lgbt people aren't evenly distributed across society and social groups. Some kpop groups might have all the members on the not-straight spectrum (Imfact, for example), while there are probably quite a few groups with zero not-straight members (and therefore aren't brought up much in this thread). Ultimately, I think it's better to form opinions about people based on their actions and individual personality, rather than what's statistically likely in their group. -

Right, and if I remember correctly, his "Can guys be with guys?" was in response to being asked who HE would want to fake marry on We Got Married. -

We've had this conversation before, but I really don't understand the logic behind Jackson being a really supportive lgbt ally. He's not really out there waving rainbow flags or saying "love is love." He's flirting with guys and doing unnecessary skinship, sometimes to the point of annoying them. Who is he "supporting" by doing that? -

In GOT7, the only one I feel confident about is Jackson as bi. Jinyoung is sus to me, as is Mark, but with Mark it might just be that he's supportive of the LGBT community (his sister is openly gay and married to a woman). Bambam pings a lot of people because he's very diva-ish, but I've never seen him show attraction to a man (unless I've missed something). For Yugyeom, the only sus moments I can remember were him wanting to get close to Ten, and I feel like he once said something like, "The person I end up with, whether it be a man or woman..." but I may be mis-remembering that. JB and Youngjae have never given me a reason to think they're not het, but I guess you never know. BTS is confusing to me because they all have quite a few receipts. Every time I think I've found the token het, that member does something to subvert it. I've given up trying to label them individually and just appreciate them as an LGBT friendly group. -

^It's funny because any time Holland says anything about anything, fans are like, "Oh so you're dating someone? Do you have a boyfriend now???" but now that he says he fell in love, fans are like, "Okay but what does it really mean...." it probably is just a comeback concept, but still -

^I think the difference is that Zayn has explicitly said that he supports the LGBTQ community, while it's rarer for kpop idols to do that, hence the need to search for clues in rainbow accessories and the like. -

Personally, I don't think we're going to have any clear percentages until non-heterosexual identities are more widely understood, accepted, and normalized. It's not just that a lot of gay/bi people don't want to officially identify that way in a survey. I think there are a ton of people who would be gay or bi but have just never considered their options beyond heterosexuality. Or have never allowed themselves to consider it. Also, as for there being fewer bi men: if you look at Ancient Greece as a time/place where male relationships were normalized (at least in certain contexts), bisexuality was very common. I remember listening to this podcast that was talking about an account (actually, it might've been from Ancient Rome) of a man who was thought of as strange for only liking women.
