PRODUCE 101 Season 1 Official Thread #WhenTheCherryBlossomsFade
Simpletons replied to Delphine's topic in Variety Shows
Yep, agreed, it was likely an afterthought... However as I said, it's a matter of perspective... one persons confidence can be easily perceived as arrogance by another... Unfortunately the baggage that Chanmi brings with her shapes those perceptions... Just keep in mind that in Korean culture, you will not go far wrong if you act humble... unlike elsewhere in the world where it is a me-first attitude... I think the point of it is... Seat 1 was all by its lonesome self and by its very nature set apart from all the others... You basically have the bullseye target on your back... Just saying... LOL, I think we have exhausted this topic... Cheers -

Power of the internet... it was seat 74... not seat 71.... With most of the seats filled, to easier access the seats, you had to walk behind the seats to get to the seat... around the 1 hour 25 min mark, Chanmi walks straight past seat 74, stops at seat 59, looks at the number and then at seat 1... Regardless, you want to do the talk, do the walk... no excuses, and especially in this industry, it's very unforgiving... Oops seat 74 was empty.... I guess it was for Ma Eun Jin who was sick and only showed up for episode 3 before withdrawing due to illness... -

Well, you are correct, only 3 seats left, 71, 59 and 1. Seats 59 and 71 were on the same row... she walked past 71 first, looked at 59 and then stared at seat 1... Regardless, sitting in seat 1 came across could be seen as confidence or arrogance, take your pick... By picking seat 1, you have painted yourself as the front runner with a huge target behind your back... You will be under greater scrutiny and every mistake will be magnified 10x's... So you need to deliver... As I said in an earlier post, this is the typical 'what if' situation, but then its all the past... Somi should actually thank Chanmi, could you imagine the stress that Somi would have been under... If Chanmi sat instead on seat 59 or 71, the 2nd last trainee to enter would have taken the other seat and Somi would have been left with seat 1... Question of the day... who sat in seat 71? If you take a look around the 11 min mark, Kim Sejeong did ask Mina and Nayoung who of them wanted to sit in seat 1... I did raise my eyebrows at that time... but we see now that their confidence was not misplaced... There was some edits of DSP and Fantagio girls debating whether or not to move... Choi Yoo Jung was so cute saying basically 'No' -

Simply a new day and thoughts... Enjoying the thread post, stay chilled folks... - Fair voting system? No such thing, as with anything, there are always flaws... As they say, flaws are there to be exploited... we do not live in an ideal world... - Serious, I don't think that there are any untalented trainees left in this 2nd round... Criteria such as Strong Vocals, Visuals, Dance, Deserving... name one that doesn't meet the criteria in one shape or form (excluding anti's) - Reality check, only 35 move onto the next stage which we will likely only know in episode 8. There are only 11 episodes (final episode is the debut I think). I can only assume that they will have the final knock outs in episode 10... Anyone know if the debut is going to be live on MCountdown? - Evil edits... Perhaps but understand this... this is reality TV, side stories and the scenes that generate discussion will always be featured... we can debate endlessly about which edits make it but as we can see in RL, it's the top stories that make the news. - Fandoms... they are all transitory... popular today, gone tomorrow when the next new fad comes along... After all who had heard of the Jelphi, Pledis, Fantagio girls beyond the small circle fans at the start... - We may not like this format, but the fact is Produce 101 is generating some hype in the KPop world. Where can you see such a diversity of talent in one show from across all the agencies... I would not be surprised to see them do another one next year or somewhere down the road... If they do so, you will see an even stronger set of trainees... YG and SM can afford not to send their trainees. JYP could even opt not to next time but I would be surprised if the other agencies opt not too. After all, its free publicity for their trainees... Okay, ranting over for the time being... -

LOL, don't think anyone is crying about it, it's all old news... I think my 'What if' question was really trying to ask was... If in that particular situation, it was handled differently... Would your perceptions have changed... For instance, if I recall correctly, there was this girl who got 19 points in the push push battle (Oh Seojung). The side story being her elimination battle with Yeusel some years back and the bad rep she received... Her snide comment before the dance routine about Yeusel still dancing like a potato certainly was certainly not endearing... What if when she was greeted by Yeusel when she entered in episode 1, she went and greeted Yeusel face-to-face, apologised for what happened so many years ago (something that still haunts her), wished Yeusel all the best and moved on... Likely nothing would have happened but it would have been a good side story... and it would have gone a long way to cast her in a new light... Who doesn't like the bad girl who learns from her mistakes and apologizes for it... If she then said in her face to face interview that she's glad to see Yeusel again and that she was so young at that time when she made those awful remarks... I can almost guarantee that the story would have resonated better with most people... Apologies for the long winded verbiage... -

Let's talk about your Simply 'What If' moments in the show... Some of my 'What If' moments during the initial episodes... What if... Heo Chanmi did not take seat 1 in episode 1 (there were only 3 seats let, 59, 71 and 1 What if... Cathy did not say the things she did during the 'Avengers' off-camera shot What if... Sejeong did not help Sohye as much as she did... What if... Somi was more ingratiating in episode 1 (when she sat down / when Sejeong said she was a fan) What if... We didn't see the Jelphi girls having fun just before their 'I swear performance' What if... We didn't see the shot of Fantagio girls also having fun during the initial performances whilest everyone was 'bored' What were your 'What if' moments that changed your opinion, resonated with you... Do try and avoid 'What if' xxx had more screen time... Oh by the way... Yu Sua mentioned that she misspoke in the initial episode and did something she should have done... what was it? Sua together with Lee Jinhee... What did you think of their 'What if' moment... I actually thought Lee Jinhee's comment during the re-evaluations was really funny and light hearted when she said it with a smile... but which could be twisted really out of context... Cheers... -

Simply Somi, For those who love Somi, she can do no wrong... she just doesn't have enough screen time to show her true self... For those that have a different view... she likely hasn't done anything really to justify herself (perhaps besides helping carry water during the hidden camera prank)... Without a doubt, she is really, really pretty... her solo vocal during TNW was truly captivating... We have a STAR in the making... I say that with all honesty... Somi to me is like the wine fresh from the vines, wine with limitless potential that just needs time to mature... The stress and pressure of trying to live up to people's expectations must be unbelievable... She is after all only 15 going on 16... Is Somi the finished product at this moment in time... Hm... likely not to the extent of Sejeong, who to my mind most likely fits that definition... But give it time... Will she fall out of the top 11, likely not... but then... who knows... Somi, Fighting! Just saying... -

LOL, maybe but the chances of a mistake in singing is so much higher... Tone, pronunciation, forgetting the words... Singing one line a la Risa is not going to help you score... Not to say dancing is any easier... But she seemed to have handle herself okay during the Irony dance routine... -

Simpletons replied to Delphine's topic in Variety Shows
Perhaps however each group had a few strong trainees, there was literally no weak group. Without a doubt, the advantage rested with the higher ranked trainees as they could choose their groups and in most cases they also took key or centre roles... how that played out with the dance and rap groups, we will only see next episode... Having said that, if you performed and stood out, you got the lion's share of the votes especially if you were to able to showcase yourself because you were the centre and/or main vocals... Where you correctly pointed out is in the instance of a large group where no-one clearly stands out... but I would say that even in large groups, the bulk of the votes will shared between the top 2, it becomes a steeper fall thereafter... For those that chose larger groups, my hats off to them for their confidence... it's not as though they were forced into those groups unlike the lower rank trainees who had less choice... My hats off to Sohye for being smart & recognising her clear weaknesses, vocals & rap. Dance was also a weakness as she was not trained in any of them... She chose a strong dance group of 3, one that had Pinky and Chaeyeon. 1 of 3 had a higher score probability than 1 of 5 or 7. Chances of messing up in a smaller group was however higher... She knows she isn't going to win the 100 k but if she meets expectations... Naive perhaps, no-training, true, untalented, depends on how you look at it but stupid, she certainly is not... Sohye, Fighting! Simply some observations... -

LOL... never going to happen... interestingly Yangwha bridge had the 2nd lowest voting total (667)... ave 167 per trainee, Call me baby had 769 votes or an average of 256 per trainee... Monster with the lowest total of 640 still managed to give Yeonjung a good number of votes.... Regardless, its all about resonance.... the higher ranked trainees will always get the better roles, that comes from their ranking... Centre will always get the spotlight and if you shine, you get the votes... perhaps not fair, but that is reality.... no system is without its flaws... simply speaking... -

Whether you can ascribe it editing, her story was compelling. If you relook at the episode one and saw trainer comments and how she was put in D, then of the shots where she seemed lost and how she found it in herself to get out of the D and into A, and over it get the centre the votes of here fellow trainees... her willingness to take a step back from centre... the prank camera... all of that resonates... -

Finally, watched the full episode, caught up to page 565, then going to bed after this post.... Some simple observations... - Does anyone realise how much footage is shot for each show that then reduces to 2 hours? Seriously, with the bulk of the episode dedicated to the performances, just how much footage really gets into the show and onto youtube... I would be amazed if even 10% of the footage shot gets seen! Produce 101 must have at least 10 cameras, even if they shoot for 8 hours over 2 days, that's 80 hours excluding performance.... - Editing, this is done by editors (notice more than one) looking through the footage picking and selecting the best cuts possible which are then edited to create a story that flows and one that will resonate & generate viewers. Sadly as with any story, there are protagonists and antagonists and supporting characters... We don't have to like it, or accept it, but that is the reality... - We all knew that the rankings would change save the top 5 trainees who each got around 380 k votes and over. You just have to look at the voting trends... Somi and Sejeong alone, got 330 k / 360 k votes over a 2 week period from episode 3-5 (this is in a region of 20-25k votes per day), Pinky, Mina and Yoonjung wouldn't be that far off either as they were starting from a smaller base. So it's not surprising to see these trends continue after the votes were reset... I would not be surprised to see more changes next week... - Editing no doubt plays a role but consider this, most of those trainees that have risen didn't have much screen time either... - Ultimately, it comes down to this... if you as a trainee can create that compelling story that resonates and makes the viewer identify with them, the trainees will get that screen time... That's just good television! - So just chill and vote for those trainees that resonate with you, share in their joy and sadness, moan and groan when it's believe it unfair but as they say, 'It's not over until the Fat Lady sings'. So just sit back and enjoy... Fighting! Okay, rant over, now I have to read another 40 posts before I go to sleep... -

Eunbin in debuting with CLC adds another interesting side story to Produce 101, just re-watched Eunbin's thank you speech when she was chosen... Does shed new light and especially wondered if the other cube trainees knew already... We vote for the trainees that resonate with us and I think that our views have certainly changed over the course of the episodes and short videos as to who we root for... We can all agree or disagree about the extent of the trainee's talent, determination, passion, visuals and what she deserves, but simply put, most of the girls in the top 30 or more meet & exceed these criterias. What works for me besides all of this are those trainees that show and act with sincerity... the hidden cameras, the pranks and the unguarded moments where the emotion leaks out says it all... Just saying... -

For the 501st page celebration... A Simpleton's view on things... This last song sang by all the trainees is so bittersweet... Been watching from episode 1 when all the trainees were basically strangers to each other and to see how far they have come with them all now on speaking if not friendly terms and helping each other where possible... So very heartwarming... Despite all the various views on editing, focus, rivalries, bottom line profits, the evil empire, etc... Produce 101 has been great entertainment. This thread has also been great reads! For most trainees, I would be surprised if any of them did not benefit from this experience in one shape or form. The memories, friendships and life lessons learned here will be something they will always remember... Fighting! So for rest of the remaining episodes, cheer when needed, sympathize when sad and through it all, share & appreciate each and every trainees success and efforts regardless of their talent & skills... -

Throughly enjoying Produce 101. With the first eliminations and the rankings done, if you want a chuckle, go back to episode 1, around the 10:30 min mark and enjoy... Definitely a must for Sejeong fans....
