  1. Many K-pop companies and artists are involved with NFTs now, and that market figures to only grow from here as it certainly seems like the next frontier that companies will try to monetize, with the young and impressionable fanbase likely seen as a demo ripe to exploit. While there’s significant pushback among K-pop fans so far, eventually the sheer omnipresence of it in the market might overwhelm even that sentiment. The currently backlash is why most celebrities and companies have chosen just to announce them and stay relatively silent to collect their checks or whatever, but Sunmi and Abyss Company have responded to the backlash from fans, perhaps in ways that are not advisable. On WeVerse, Sunmi released a statement in Korean that reads terribly and comes off like her telling fans that if they don’t like it then leave. It got to the point where the fansite had to try to explain the tone in a way that doesn’t sound completely dismissive and shitty. Either way, it’s not great. What stood out to me is how the statement angles at exploiting any parasocial relationship developed, basically asking the fans to trust in her in whatever and that she wouldn’t do anything to hurt them. The backlash got to the point where the company also released a statement. It says a lot of nothing, but attempts to assuage any concerns. Anyway, it doesn’t appear that she or the company will be backing down, so it must be a hell of a payday and the company must really believe it’s going to become a core part of their operations going forward. Bleak. —— For information on NFTs, here’s a collection of quality work on the topic and I found this thread to be quite good as well (or here for more bleak mess). Quite frankly, I just find them wholly unnecessary. Everything they are involved with could be executed as well or (usually) better without them, and that’s even before getting into any moral or ethical concerns that are explored in the writing above. 7. A comment made by fromis_9's leader Saerom, made at the very beginning of a 'V Live' broadcast, has aroused criticism from netizens online. Back on February 11, fromis_9 members Jiheon, Nakyung, Saerom, Hayoung, and Jisun greeted fans with a casual 'V Live' broadcast. However, the broadcast went live a few moments before the members realized that the cameras had begun rolling. While Jisun could be seen laughing about something, Saerom commented over the laughter, "I'm so sick of this. I wanna hurry up and go home, right now." However, a few of the other members quickly realized that the live broadcast had begun, and said, "Hello~". Hayoung then leaned into Saerom to tell her that they were live, and a few more quiet moments passed before Saerom counted, "two, three" so all of the members could greet the fans together. Despite the fact that the comment was made when she was not aware that the live broadcast had begun, Saerom's remarks nonetheless did not go unnoticed by netizens, as they commented, "If you don't want to be an idol, then just quit. Easy as that." "If I were in an idol group and my group wasn't famous even after 5-years like them, I would be pissed too lol." "If you don't want to do 'V Live's than go practice your vocals seriously... you can't even sing." "They're such nobodies that this happened almost a day ago and it's still not causing that much of an issue." "Is she saying that right in front of her company staff? And there were others laughing with her before she said that, so were they saying something related to that comment?" "This isn't even surprising honestly. These girls always look like they're pissed." "Nice knowing you, bye." "You can't call this just a simple mistake because that is what she really feels, and her true feelings came out kekekekeke." "If she said 'I'm tired', that would have been like, she had a rough day. But 'I'm sick of this'? She must really hate her life kekekekeke." "So fromis_9 is disbanding after this huh? HYBE gave them one last album before a permanent vacation kekekekeke." Source
  8. Pentagon member Yeo One has been involved in a minor car accident, and therefore will halt his activities temporarily in order to focus on treatment for his injury. On February 10, Cube Entertainment revealed in an official statement, "Hello, this is Cube Entertainment. We would like to notify that Pentagon member Yeo One will halt his activities temporarily due to a back injury. On the early morning of February 9, the vehicle which Yeo One was riding in on his way home, after completing an individual schedule, was hit by a dunk driver. Immediately after the accident, Yeo One visited the emergency room, and the doctors found no major injuries. Although he should have returned home following his hospital visit to rest, Yeo One showed his strong desire to resume his schedules, and thus attended a live recording for 'IDOL LIVE: Homecoming Day' on the afternoon of February 9. Then, on his way home after this schedule, Yeo One experienced pain in his back, and visited the hospital again. He has been treated accordingly and is now recovering. As a result, Cube Entertainment has determined that in order to prioritize the health and speedy recovery of our artist, Yeo One will halt his activities with Pentagon for the time being while focussing on his treatment. Additionally, Pentagon will promote as a 7-member group until Yeo One recovers. Thank you." Get well soon, Yeo One! Source
