I think self-managed study is needed for all subjects at university, really. I have ups and downs in self-motivation, unfortunately.

Your choices were varied, lol. I too was also considering medicine and then I decided not to go for it because a) it just wasn't for me and b) the grades weren't what I expected in Bio/Physics. As far as I know, there isn't a science to med pathway in this country. Congrats on your topping IPT! Yep. There's A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G and U. The chemistry course I'm doing right now is really unstructured. Here, we have things called exam boards - there are about four main ones and schools can pick which exam boards they want for each subject for the different public exams. The content is mostly similar since they all are for the same exams but the structure can be different.
