Typically, fireworks are generally associated with celebration. Firecrackers are lit during Lunar New Year...in some Asian countries, some stores will lit fireworks to celebrate its opening...there is even a "Cantonese" saying where you lit firecrackers to celebrate when something good happens.
Now...the problem lies with that the drama has selected something that is symbolically known to be used during a celebration to compare it with a tragic and emotional event. I can see and understand why people will be upset with this comparison.
Fair enough, that definitely explains the anger towards it. To me in english I interpret the firecracker as an alarming sound if anything, but if the word is more similar to firework then that's just a very wrong comparison

Maybe it gets lost in translation but I don't see how "tear gas exploding like fire crackers" is meant to sound belittling? It's just a short metaphor...
