yep, you're right. shinee did really well with "view", and they were only of the four male idol groups to make the top 100 chart on every end of the year digital chart (along with big bang, exo and ikon). either way, they've always done consistently well digitally. it's hard to find their numbers before 2010, but it's a pretty well known fact that "replay" did great on end of the year charts and "ring ding ding" was in the top forty on gaon's end of the year digital chart which was a feat considering that it was released at the very end of october. and you're right about "deja-boo" too! i'm not sure about with other charts, but he was pretty much top five on melon for it's first week, top ten for it's second and top thirty well after a month of release. he was also #1 on gaon's digital chart for a week, and #3 on the monthly chart for january last year so he was barely hurting. and his last single (the leading single from his opus album in september) did pretty well digitally as well despite the lack of promotion. it didn't have longevity but it proved that he makes an impact digitally when he can. you're probably right about taemin though. i get the impression that, even though he's respected and people are always talking about how talented he is / his work ethic, the public still isn't as aware of the strides that he's made as a vocalist and overall artist so they don't take him as seriously as they should. it sucks but, like you pointed out, he had to start from the bottom and work his way up and he's still in that process at the moment. i think it is though? or it's not doing any worse than "danger" did.

also: b.a.p honestly aren't much competition to taemin this time around, it's true. like the show they have the best shot at winning in is "show champion" and, even then, that'd only be if shawols totally fell through and weren't able to get his voting numbers up but i doubt that's gonna happen. in g-friend's case: they got a triple crown on mcd so they can't win there again, and i think that they can win two more times on "inkigayo"? "music bank" though ..., they had their fourth win this week and the show doesn't have a cut off.

damn  :(   I was hoping Taemin to get more wins (around 4 or 5) than the last time he did for  Danger (which was 2, I think?) but it seems tough. G-friend's digital slayage...and now, Mamamoo just got an ALL-KILL. Poor Taemin, he might not win as much as we wanted and expected. Not to mention, there's WINNER too.

Then again, there's also YT views, sns, tv appearances, Etc. points. Well, see how it goes.

  2. I realize my posts have been dampening the mood of this thread. :( I'm really sorry. Please don't think too much of what I said earlier. Just think of that as push/motivation for you guys to keep downloading and streaming. Don't give up! Stream! He still has a chance. Its still not too late!

LONG RAMBLING POST...so I put in under spolier.

I have been pondering about Taemin's comeback and apparent dichotomous nature of it. Does anybody know if SM structure is like that of Samsung and LG? Samsung and LG have different "teams" who work on their projects and the competition amongst within the group is greater than any outside competition. For instance, Samsung Electronic and Samsung Semiconductors often bid for same contract and under bid each other. LG's intracompany competition is legendary.

I read once that SHINee was the last group to be mentored by Lee Soo Man, personally, and that EXO was the first project by the new CEO. I also read that there are definitely two fractions in SM, one being Lee Soo Man line and the other being Kim line. If so, then what SM did make sense...Taemin's solo could have a huge impact, so they throw the biggest obsticle the can think of....DO releasesa song week before Taemin and Chen releases a song a week after Taemin. Any EXO who might have rooted for Taemin would be busy steaming DO and Chen's songs....

Perhaps I am too cynical and too easily pursuaded to believe the conspiracy theories. I hope I am wrong. it would be sad to think that SHINee didnt get 100% support from all of SM.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were. The biggest issue regarding fraction in the Ent. world that I heard recently was Johnny's Ent. from Japan, which had 2 fractions (family line vs a long-time succesful manager/director) but the jealousy and conflict got so bad that the director was forced to leave the company and she did.

I remember hearing from some old SM groups fans that the reason DBSK split up and lawsuit happened was because they had issues with the Kim line/Kim Young Min. There was actually no problem with Lee Soo Man. For example, Heechul who is close with Lee Soo Man, is on good terms with JYJ members and Hangeng. He also dissed SME (more like directed to KYM, I supposed) on a tv show he was a regular on few years ago. SJ are still friendly with JYJ members and their former member Hangeng. Most of former SM artists like FTTS and SHINHWA who left SM still got respect for LSM and had dinners together. Don't take my word for it though. These are just rumors of what I heard from fans who claim to know.

CEO is KYM while LSM is the director/founder of SM. Not sure how that works if there are indeed fractions in the company. It kinda makes me feel sad tho when you pictured the scenario. But doesn't KYM handle projects starting from SMRookies? Possibly RV, SRB16, NCT, etc. Not sure about EXO.

Anyway, I don't think we need to worry much about Taemin. Even if he's not doing well digitally now, he'll get his time one day. I mean, he's still young and has plenty of time ahead of him to build his solo career. Think of it as just a learning process for him to develop as a better and more progressive artist in the future.

During the day it's really low like 30/40/50. I didn't know that nightime doesn't count. Is this really true? Cuz that would be a stupid system if they stopped counting it after a certain time.

He still has a chance at winning awards though if the rest; physical, voting, mv views are much better than the other promoting idols.

Cuz he didn't do well digitally last time, but the rest was good. So he won some shows.

"Real-time" is when everybody is awake. Obviously, night time is when fandom streams, I don't think that counts, unless I'm wrong.

o.O that's not good. Sigh. A song this good doesn't deserve to be in that position. If in 20s I could accept but 30s/40s/especially 50s...that's just unfair imo. It should get the recognition it deserves. sigh #Justice4PYN

    @keyholic

True. improvement is better than nothing

  4. It's depressing but I think there is a preconceived ideas about SHINee.  When I told my male cousin (in his 20's, living in Seoul) that my favorite Korean singer was SHINee, he said that he had heard of them.  So when i asked if he liked them, he said, "Of course not. I am a man, not a girl."  Initially, I was shocked by his answer, but then I came to accept that he'll probably not give SHINee a chance.  Hopefully, Taemin and rest of the SHINee can win over more fans as time passes, one fan by one fan.

Yeah, I knew that males and their prejudiced towards male groups in general. Only select few male idol groups do well. I thought SHINee as a group are doing fine with digitals tho? Sure, not digital monsters but they did well with View, right? Didn't Jonghyun did decent-ok (but I guess he has the initial hype as songwriter, composer and radio show just like Taeyeon with her rep a s an OST queen prior to her solo debut, hence, her digital success). Taemin probably didn't have much for the public to know him by, hence, its as if he had to start from bottom and work his way up for digitals. He didn't have an initial hype to build from. But, at least PYN seems to be doing slightly better than Danger, no?

i had a feeling that g-friend would be hard to push past, and i was worried about mamamoo as well and now we have chen's dots ost coming in like a bulldozer and taking the top position on multiple digital charts. so, that's a bit unfortunate. i honestly also think that sm didn't hype taemin as well as they should've?

Sorry to cut your post but I do agree on all the things you said especially this. I don't get why people focus on BAP as Taemin's competition when he is facing tougher competition from Mamamoo and possibly Chen (I'm surprised by that). Is G-friend eligible for more wins? I thought they've already grabbed triple crowns?

Taemin's mv views is not looking good either.

    Agreed with all of it!

Press your number and the rest of the album are doing better in the evening(where I am). PYN is now 16 on Melon and the rest is in the top 80. During the daytime(where I am) it sinks low. The only reason why it goes up is because more shawols stream during that time. The public indeed just doesn't want to give it a chance and so they don't stream it.

The charts def do not represent quality music, cuz SHINee always ranks low*.*. Clearly they don't know what good music is.

Even the charts in America do better in representing different styles of music and praising it. Most of the korean public just doesn't want to give a new and different style a chance. It's a shame really. But I can def see them broadening their horizon in the future.

But how well is his song charting during daytime? that one matters. I don't think nightime counts.
  5. Hi, just dropping by because there is a thing that I'm baffled and wonder about: yeah, its about the digitals of PYN. Sorry, I know many of you are probably not in the mood to talk about it as its quite depressing to think about but I'm genuinely up for discussions and theories because Taemin is really talented, the song is really good and seems public friendly enough, I just don't get why its not doing that well.

*If you're not in the mood to talk about it, then, please ignore this.

    Is it because...?

    • Lack of public recognition?
    • Lack initial hype?

I suppose that if pre-comeback Taemin did something potent that put his name more out there to the public through a show or drama or anything, and then release a song/comeback as a follow-up, it would help his digital charting. If I'm not mistaken, he was one of the popular male trends in 2013. So, if he still retain that hype now, I think he'd do decent - well enough. But, unfortunately trends do not last long, plus his long individual hiatus and inactivity after ACE+Danger. He basically chose to rest and work on his album while other SHINee members were busy with individual activities last year.<--We shouldn't even blame him for this tbh, otherwise, I doubt we'd get this amazing album he put out.

    • Is he an an idol that is prejudiced by the public that they tend to not give him a chance/sleep on his releases? (I hope this isn't the case. I think he's more than talented enough, can sing, superb dancing and wrote some of the lyrics. For someone of his caliber, he should get more recognition for his hardwork and efforts.)
    • Is the public too biased towards certain current chart-topping hits to the extent of not giving a chance to others?

Korean charts is weird and frustrating. Many people trying to pass it off as legit but the thing is, the music industry isn't diverse.. Korean public with their predictable music taste with almost everyone liking the same thing, same genre, trend, jumping on the bandwagon as well as having prejudism to certain acts. The herd mentality. The charts do not determine music quality.

Another thing is, I don't know if anyone realize this but if you look at successful solos trend these days, they're all slow-tempo ballads or R&B with artists who are singer-songwriter/musician kinda thing.
Dancing/performing solo acts like Rain and Se7en were all in the past. (Plus their scandals, but that's a different story). They are just no longer in trend. Though at the same time, I don't think this could be a disadvantage to Taemin. This mean, he could have chance in standing out among a sea of balladeers and be at the forefront while reviving the path for performer-dancer soloists to come. Its just that the timing is not there yet.

Sorry if this is poorly written. I’m not articulate but I hope you get what I mean.

Anyway, Drip Drop is not meant for a duet performance. Its obvious from the very beginning, that choreography is meant for a solo artist. I cannot comprehend how anyone could come up with an idea that it can be performed as duet.

  6. [+381 -41] I'm half Korean, but I don’t want to be… since it’s looked down upon I try to hide it.

Wow this self-loathing due to being half among the Korean-Japanese and half-koreans quite sad. I don't know what to say. Its sadder the fact that they're not confident or strong enough to have some pride even when people look down on them. I wanna criticize them but at the same time, I feel pity.
