This was my response to some troll "singing expert" in this thread about Seohyun's growth. Posting it here in case it comes handy to anyone else.

The Pantene CF is so beautiful. She looks PERFECT. Her confidence and elegance is really shining. Hair, makeup, body, everything looks so so perfect. Also a Korean and Chinese CF is huge. Pantene is already a huge world brand, but such an epic CF running in China is just about the best exposure she can get. It's quite amazing that she went from zero endorsements to one of the biggest anyone can possibly get. SM finally realized what she's worth. From the look of it there's more versions to come unless they're reeeaaaally Seohyun-biased. Honestly I would have preferred her alone, especially since her presence in the CF is pretty attention-grabbing anyway. She always shares endorsements with other members. Still, I don't mind. She's surely rising now and and in the future we'll definitely see her get more individual opportunities. And anyway this CF is so beautiful it's hard to care about anything else. It's great that there's a song too, though it doesn't sound that interesting. They will definitely promote it some way but I doubt it's going to be some official release by SM. More like TY's CF songs.

Right now we need to focus. No fanwars, no insecurity, no confusion. Seohyun has three very important projects coming up, including a Station. What she needs is all the support and promotion she can get. I think we should make a banner or slogan to help support Seohyun's solo. It's very very fortunate that we have a few months notice in advance to start preparing and promoting. Don't worry about being excessive, she needs all the support and attention she can get. Being noticed is better than being annoying. We have to figure out how to get access to Melon and share it with as many people as possible. It's very hard for fans to have a big impact on streaming since it depends on all of Korea, but we should at least try so we know we did everything we can. Especially if the access can be spread to Chinese fans eventually. Big Sone usually organize group/bulk orders in advance. I am sure Chinese Seomates and other local support groups will do their part. I honestly don't know much about how this works, so I will be ordering the album on my own. Speaking of which, we should all try to order as many copies as we can afford individually. Don't think of it as a waste but an investment in her future. We spend a big amount of time fangirling her and following her and defending her. Let's show that same dedication where it counts - sales. Sales are what will drive her future opportunities and ability to work on more projects. A few albums cost less than a nice pair of shoes. Some people spend hundreds and thousands on tickets to fly and see their bias. The least we can do is spend what we can on her album. I don't know how much support she'll get from Sone as a whole, but it's useless to worry about that. Seomates should first do everything we can so nobody can say we "let her flop". If we know we did everything we can, we can be satisfied regardless of how she fares. Let's pace ourselves and be organized. We can look up how other groups and artists have been supported and start formulating our own outline.

Despite her skill she WAS unnatural in her first musical, and most of her performances before 2013-2014. Part of that was lack of opportunities but part was definitely her own stubbornness which thankfully is changing. She gets expotentially better and better with everything in time. That's why I'm not big on posting her past performances everywhere because I'd rather people have a fresh perspective when she slays in the present. She hasn't shown us her best yet but she will. No amount of us arguing with people is going to convince them she's a good performer until they see it themselves and she really proves it beyond a doubt. Let's focus on what's to come instead of what she's done already. Plus that ranking is three years old it seriously doesn't matter now.

If she gets a variety show it'll probably be around when she releases an album, just like the other two. I'm sure SM will promote her well when it's time, unless she has other things keeping her busy as she usually does. I hope it's not an OnStyle show (though I'd still love that), but something on network TV with other people (like Unnies Slamdunk). It's a great way for her to get closer to the public and new celebrities. I think Seohyun's really underrated for variety shows because she never really gets the chance. She's quite lovable and cute and of course a hard worker. Even her two minutes on Running Man got great responses. I trust Seohyun not to take some whatever EDM song but if she does....I'm just gonna have to assume she liked it. Not all stations are EDM by the way. YnA's wasn't, a lot of the others weren't. The artist's preference does matter. So far all the EDM type songs were picked personally by those singers so I don't think Seohyun would go in that direction. I really hope she gets to work with JYP since she wanted that since before but he's already worked with TF now so I don't know :( Whatever she releases will be public friendly, I'm positive. Even if it's not a huge hit. She's not into experimental type music or anything too slow and without buildup.

Not really. She's already in a hit movie and has two dramas coming up that are going to get her exposure, and one is a lead role. There's no way Scarlet Heart will not get attention even if her role is brief. It's highly anticipated in Korea AND China (one of their national dramas after all). Her Chinese web drama is going to be available to over a billion people so even if "few" watch it, by default it's probably going to get her a huge number of audiences. We know how good she is at dubbing her own Chinese, she'll surely get praise for it. Plus let's not discount her musicals. She performed to 50K-60K people up close, that's not a small number. A lot of netizens randomly bring up Mamma Mia now to praise her. If anything it's more popularity than she could have gained through a solo as an idol. That said, she hasn't been on TV really since WGM (The TTS and Channel SNSD were cable shows with members), and her popularity hasn't suffered. She's still high on MLB Ballpark even with hundreds of new girl group members climbing ranks, still gets good comments and trends often. If anything her popularity's at its highest peak since WGM these days, and with a wider demographic. Her articles are almost always dominated by people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. That's much better than people in their 10's. We don't know when her solo is (probably next year) and as far as her station, well, it's just a station. There's no huge need to be popular, there's a high turnover and most of the projects aren't paid attention to for more than a couple days. Only TY so far has digital power so there's no pressure on the rest. I'd rather just enjoy the song, and if it's really good, it might chart well too. There's only so much "getting your face on TV" can do anyway. Sun Mi from Wonder Girls disappeared for years and came back suddenly with a good song and that's all it took.

I think the SM building thing is definitely an SMTown stage. No station so far has a dance sequence, that's not the focus. If it is though, there's nothing we can do about it and it's best to avoid headaches and just focus on Seohyun's acting. SM IS lazy enough to try to promote them both at once, but it's just a station. Most aren't even paid attention to and she'll have a solo album anyway. I really don't think it's a station though. About Pantene, there's no indication Seohyun has been removed so I don't know why everyone in the thread is freaking out about that. Seohyun herself still has the CF shoot pictures up. They are not going to waste all the effort in flying in an international team just to scrap it for no reason. Just wait. If she isn't part of the campaign eventually, whatever. She still has John Masters which is a more high end line anyway.

It's....not that dramatic. If she is not close to the cast, she has good reason. She started filming very late and her character in general is isolated from the rest and only really interacts with Nam Joo Hyuk's. As actors their job is to act, not become friends. Especially if they barely see each other. She obviously went to the party, and the few selcas you see are only a fraction of the people that were there. Seohyun is not the type to be on bad terms with anybody, and she wasn't the only one without press pictures (none for Baek hyun or Nam Joo Hyuk and other female casts too). As a Seomate you will make your life hard looking for neglect and tension everywhere. We can enjoy the drama and enjoy Seohyun's part and be understanding of the dynamics as well. Be cool about everything because I'm sure she is.

Yeah, her total scenes are pretty much the screen caps we've seen. I joked it would be five minutes but it's literally five minutes I expect it'll be the same for Moon Lovers. She filmed for less than a week as far as we know. Maybe more, but still, not expecting much. The web drama seems like it'll be our treat since she's the lead. I don't know how well it'll do but tbh if it's China there's no such thing as "flopping" because the population is so huge even something irrelevant can get 20x the views of Korea alone. I'm not looking for massive success but some general exposure for her to China. It'll be something for Seomates to look forward to as we can watch her in a lead role to our heart's content. All in all I'm not too thrilled about her projects this year but at the same time it's best she work this way, starting small. She said the same thing at her party. Better to build than start big and fall flat. She's at least extending her presence in a lot of mediums. It's amazing after 10 years we can even say she's doing this many different things. I remember when her doing acting or musicals only felt like a far-fetched dream. Same with solo music. I'm so so so excited for her Station release and solo album (probably next year). I really don't care what genre it is or how it charts as long as the song is perfect for her. I think she will surprise us. For the last couple years it felt really uneasy being a Seohyun fan because it didn't look like she was getting anywhere. After this week I'm happy to say I just feel relaxed and excited about what she has to bring. There's nothing to worry about. She has proven her goal is to do as much as we wished for and more. Now all there is to wait and enjoy the growth. Hopefully dumb fan wars can also subside too. Now that all members are getting what they want everyone should just mind their own business and support their bias or biases. At this point there's no point in caring about fandom politics or who said what. It doesn't matter. Seohyun will give us everything anyway. Our job now is just to support and (skillfully) promote her as much as we can so she can continue having options for better projects. Just like she's too busy to care about drama, let's be busy loving her to fall into pettiness.

I feel a huge relief after today. I'm so happy that she's finally said it straight that she's doing solo music. I never thought she would. But it's better this way as fans can start preparing and organizing to support her instead of a sudden attack where everyone is lost. I can tell she cares a lot about doing it the right way. A summer Station release has to be before Kcon so it's SOOOOOOOOON I'm also loving how candid and expressive she is at her birthday party. It's great to have so much access to her thoughts because again, she's rarely straight up. I love everything she's saying about her interest and goals and agree completely with the way she's handling her business. She has a lot of hopes and plans and she speaks in such a charming and intelligent. Let's buckle down from now and support her the absolute best we can.

TBH the comments she's getting aren't even that bad. They're just general "SM sucks" "idols suck" "can she even act?" type comments. Looking through I saw most of them were praising her visuals and said she suits historical looks well. Also a lot of people were saying she's good to start with a small role and did well in her musical so they're looking forward. A couple years ago they would've been calling her a robot, fake goody, plastic monster, "doesn't look like an actress" if she was casted in something like this. Majority of those type comments have died down. It's just the top comments get blindly voted up by whoever clicks because it's a really high profile project and idols are easy to trash. For an idol with almost no acting experience it'd be weirder if the general public was supporting her and giving her just praise because they bitch everyone when it comes to acting, even their veteran goddesses like Lee Yeon Hee, Kim Tae Hee and Go Ara who have like 10 years of experience. You have to remember when it comes to dramas most of the people commenting don't care about kpop and have a bias already set against idols who are like Disney stars to them. Just take with a grain of salt and enjoy Seohyun in the drama. I trust her to give her best and if it wins people over that's amazing but if she doesn't I'm not worried because most don't lol. Even IU who was great in her last drama, they trash her now. There's no winning with netizens really. Regardless her popularity will go waaaay up when it airs, especially in China.

Something that really irks me is when people say "your bias should be grateful to so-and-so member/s for carrying the group because that's the only reason she's relevant". Seohyun? Do they have any idea where her popularity or fandom comes from? How much she contributed to spreading SNSD's name? Seohyun debuted in SNSD through her own hard work. She doesn't need to thank anyone else for her spot in the group. She was never an unpopular member. In fact during debut she had a significant following of adult fans. The earliest and longest lasting SNSD fan sites were once SEOHYUN-A and SEOPLE. DCSJH and her fancafe have been active with the same keepers since her debut. Do you see this? This was 2008, before SNSD were even "relevant". SNSD's boom and Seohyun's boom happened around the same time. They got popular for Gee and Genie, and she got popular from WGM. She was on the show for a year when it had monster ratings. A year is a long time, especially considering most dramas and other variety shows are only a few months. The huge majority of her international fandom came to stan her through WGM, and she became the third most recognized member to the Korean public. Her Marie Claire cover (individual covers for each member) sold out first during that time, almost right away. Like TY brought in fans from OSTs, and YA brought in fans from dramas, she brought in fans from WGM. Her OWN activity that she was scouted for. Producers said in an interview they wanted Seohyun and asked for her, because she had a strange personality that left an impression on them. And again, WGM was HUGE. Back then (and even now) it introduced so many Seomates to SNSD and Kpop in general. Seohyun never had to "ride" anyone else's success. She always earned her place and was a valuable factor in promoting the group. The only reason i-sone think she's unpopular is because they only paid attention to their own bias, Seohyun fans were never the loud or annoying type, and SM never took advantage of her momentum to give her more individual projects. The second wave of her popularity came from musicals, again, which have nothing to do with SNSD. A growing general public audience is loving and supporting her. She had to network and audition all her castings on her own with no help from SM. She said herself so many times it was her own effort and she didn't want to be known as "SNSD's Seohyun" on stage. So again, what is she supposedly obligated to be grateful for? If she has another wave in popularity, it will be through her venture as an actress, which she's earned. She completed her theatre degree first, she did three stage projects, she waited 9 years and she's working her way up through small roles. She's never half-assed in the group. She gives them vocal strength and clean dancing that anchors their "synchronized" image. Nobody "carried" her or is giving her anything she hasn't worked damn hard for.

I've ALWAYS noticed this and hate underrated she is as a dancer. I'm not saying she's the best but she does have this definite strength that's often overlooked. Remember when Stephanie said Seohyun was the dance student that left the most impression on her? If you pause any group choreography almost anywhere you'll see her form is always immaculate and her hands are always beautiful, never just flopping around. That's really hard to do, especially when the movements are second nature and it's easy to just auto-pilot through them. There's a lot of examples and I'll post more later but here's some (Watch all of Karma Butterfly, her movements are really most butterfly-like)

I wanted to do a post to organize all of Seohyun's known connections outside SNSD. For now it's just to keep all the names in one place. Later on I think I will make a separate thread for it with more details and pictures. Her collection of friends/network is really really impressive and underrated. Singers/Musicians Bada (First gen girl group legend, super vocalist, musical queen, co-star, friend) Ock Juhyun (First gen girl group legend, super vocalist, musical queen, mentor) Younha (Acclaimed soloist) Akdong Musician (Talented and beloved duo, mutual following on IG) Wonder Girls (especially Lim, but she is also close to Yubin, and mutually follows Yeeun on IG) Yoon Gun (Digital duet) Joo Hyun Mi (Legend, duet) Ha Choon Hwa (Legend, wants to duet) Kim Chang Hwan (Legend, duet) Kim Jong Kook (First gen boy group, Running Man) Joo Young Hoon (Legendary composer of over 300 songs, kpop pioneer, the guy on Radio Star that was gushing about her) Lee Jung Hyun (Legend, pop icon, "the Queen of techno" in Asia) 91-line (Soyou, Minho, CNBlue Jungshin and Minhyuk, Goo Hara, etc) SM oppas (Changmin, Donghae, Kyuhyun, etc.) Kahi (After School, a part of Seo's charity group Ddasamo) Boa Actors/Actress Lee Jung Hyun (again) (Blue Dragon Film Award winning acclaimed actress) Im Soo Jung (another Blue Dragon Film Award winning acclaimed actress) Kang Sora (one of the most popular and talented young actresses working right now) Jung Yoomi (Six Flying Daggers, Rooftop Prince) Lee Chung Ah (Flower Boy Ramen Shop) Seo Yoo Jin (Delicious Proposal, part of Ddasamo) Cha TaeHyun (part of Ddasamo) Joo Jin Mo (co-star, acclaimed actor, A Frozen Flower, Empress Ki) Lee Junki (co-star, part of Ddasamo) Lee Jong Hyuk (A Gentleman's Dignity, went to all of her musicals) Yoo Yeon Suk (Warm and Cozy, invited Seohyun to his movie premiere) Elly Kim (actress) and her husband Kim Jin Moo (director) Honey Lee (sent her a message on twitter way back) (she is also a musical actress, Chicago, etc) Others Athlete/Gymnast Son Yeon Jae Comedian Park Ji Sun Designers Seokwan Kim and Debbie Yoon (Andy & Debb) Designer Hye Jin Hong (The Studio K) Acclaimed international photographer (Time Magazine, etc) Poala Kudacki Musicals - everyone she's worked with and probably everyone in the industry in general lol If there's anyone I've forgotten, let me know. I want to keep this updated.

Actually the comments were all nice (but I agree it's a bad picture on purpose). Just shows how generally well-liked she is these days that nobody even comments on that. Also look at the ages of commenters. She has almost no fans in the 10's. Aka the fans that hang out on Pann. So if you ever see dumb comments about her there, know most of her supporters are adults! It looks like musicals really has made her core fan base stronger.

I keep seeing Sone say "if Y*ri's album comes out first Seohyun stans will complain". Can they be quiet? We've already known since long ago she will get a solo first, and we already know we will have to wait for Seohyun. It's like they want us to act up so they can turn around like "aha! you uglies". Don't give them the satisfaction. We don't need to be looking over our shoulders and coveting others. We know her time will come, and until then there is a lot to keep us happy. That said, a lot of RANDOM non-fans WILL say "what about Seohyun". Why? Because it just makes sense to them. If people try to pin that on the Seomate fandom, correct them. We don't have to apologize for others. SNSD is a big group, everyone in Kpop talks about them and what they are doing. Sone are always trying to prove how popular they are so why is this hard to understand? You can't expect the only people to comment on something to be stans. I saw the same thing with Tiff*ny's solo, random people saying "where's Seohyun???" and being rude to Tiff. And then we got the blame for it. Nope, that's bullshit. We can't keep a watch guard on every opinion on the web. Maybe YOU should use some common sense and learn to differentiate.
