I agree that from the way the missions are set up it seems that JYP is taking public response into account. But I also believe that popularity-wise there will be some leeway given to the more talented members, simply because talent and performance ability is still required to hold the group together. I think that's the reason why Minyoung and Jiwon are still in the show, despite their poor showing in the MILK polls. At the end of the day, I think that the whole point of forming a girl group is to balance the strengths and flaws of each individual girl into a unit: the popular girls will rely on the talented ones during performances, while the talented ones will ride on the popularity gained from the more popular girls. Both are important attributes that shouldn't be discounted.

I agree that 6Mix and TWICE are two different projects with possibly two completely different concept altogether. But at the same time, you cannot discount the fact that JYP was prepared to debut OT4 in 6Mix, which is a huge vote of confidence in their abilities and readiness to debut. Also, I think it is naive to think that JYP approached Sixteen with a blank slate, without an inkling of who he wants to include, and is going to build his line-up based purely on what he sees in the 10(?) episodes of the show. Most of the girls have been in the company for around 3 years, and I believe JYP has a good gauge of their abilities and readiness to debut. It is therefore logical to assume that he already has a core of the group formed (maybe half of the group?) and Sixteen will help him decide who to include in the rest of the line up. And I believe that this core of the group is likely to be OT4, who let's be honest, will be a good foundation vocally for JYP to build the rest of the team upon based on the concept he wants for the group (rapper? stronger dancers?) and the marketing direction (Japanese market? Chinese market?).

I feel that the whole "who occupies what role" thing is overplayed. IMO, the only roles that are of significance are the main vocal and the rapper. A good main vocal enables the group to tackle a wider range of songs and allow them to throw in all those power-packed high notes to make a song more eye-catching. Rapper-wise, if JYP wants the group to have a strong image, a good rapper is a must. Too often I have seen girl groups with members who can barely rap, labelled as rapper simply to fill a role. Dance wise, I honestly don't think it is that important to have a main dancer. Girl groups don't generally have solo dance segments in their songs for the main dancer, and their choreography is likely to be catered for the group as a whole. So to me, dancing seems more like a secondary attribute, one whereby as long as you are at an above-average level you should be fine. It should not be the only area you excel in. As for the maknae role, it is even more ridiculous. Shouldn't you just choose the best 7 for the group and the youngest of the lot will be the maknae?

I think she is the most visible trainee prior to Sixteen: she appeared in many MVs, CFs and if i am not wrong she was in Dream High 2 as well. Not to mention she to debut in 6Mix. I believe fans of Kpop companies like JYP and SM like to keep track of promising trainees and be on the lookout for the "next big thing" so being the most active trainee pre-debut i am sure she has a larger following compared to the rest

I think Dahyun's fall in popularity has more to do with the fact that her popularity was unsustainably high (14%? on milk poll) from the first episode, a result of her gaining many casual fans and viewers from her eagle dance which was the admittedly the most eye-catching performance compared to the rest. But as the hype dies down, coupled with Mnet's evil editing, the casual viewers started jumping ship, leading to the perceived decrease in popularity. But in the end, I think her current popularity isn't too shabby either and is at a more realistic level, alongside Mina, Somi and Chaeyoung. For Nayeon, I think right from the start before the show started her popularity was already higher than the rest. Her bad editing from episode 1 only hurt her to the extent that she didn't gain new fans, but as the show went on and people start seeing her in a different light (leadership, caring, talented), her popularity improved from there.

Hi everyone, newbie here. Been following the show since day one but never got around to posting anything. I have a theory here: Seeing that JYP is the one who set up the groups for the team mission, do you think he grouped them such that there is a member in each group he is willing to eliminate. Because I am sure he has a few definite members in mind and if he put them all in a group together, he risk having to eliminate one of them should their group loses by some freak incident. What do you guys think?
