[TIME] Rap Monster of Breakout K-Pop Band BTS on Fans, Fame and Viral Popularity Raisa Bruner Jun 28, 2017 BTS may be the biggest musical act you've never heard of — unless you're already one of the Korean pop group's millions-strong fanbase. The seven-member boy band, Bangtan Sonyeondan (or BTS for short), is know for their catchy pop-rap, sharp music video choreography and candid social media presence. They've recently leveraged their popularity into blockbuster stadium tours and Billboard's prize for Top Social Artists of the year, as well as nabbing a spot on TIME's list of 25 Most Influential People on the Internet. It's not hard to see why: a live video of two members applying face masks roped in half a million concurrent viewers. Their backstage selfies regularly rack up half a million likes. A red carpet appearance can kick off a global Twitter trend. But how did they get here? "We’re just a normal group of boys from humble backgrounds who had a lot of passion and a dream to be famous," says singer and songwriter Kim Nam-joon, who goes by the moniker Rap Monster and, as the only English-speaking member of the group, often represents BTS in interviews. Currently on tour in Japan, Rap Monster took the time to explain BTS' rise and how the group feeds its hungry fanbase. TIME: How did the BTS group come together? Rap Monster: Back in 2010, I was introduced to Mr. Bang [bang Si Hyuk], our executive producer [and CEO of BigHit Entertainment]. I was an underground rapper and only 16 years old, a freshman at high school. Bang thought I had potential as a rapper and lyricist, and we went from there. Then SUGA joined us. [Third group member] J-hope was really popular as a dancer in his hometown. We were the first three! We debuted as a collaboration between the seven of us in June 2013. We came together with a common dream to write, dance and produce music that reflects our musical backgrounds as well as our life values of acceptance, vulnerability and being successful. The seven of us have pushed each other to be the best we can be for the last four years. It has made us as close as brothers. BTS as a group sort of took off with the success of our 2015 album that had our hit single "I NEED U." When did you first realize you were developing a global fandom? We didn’t realize we were becoming famous until we were invited to KCONs [K-pop music festivals] in the U.S. and Europe in 2014 or 2015. Thousands of fans were calling our name at the venue, and almost everyone memorized the Korean lyrics of our songs, which was amazing and overwhelming. Who would have thought that people from across the ocean, Europe, the U.S., South America, even Tahiti, would love our songs and performances, just by watching them on YouTube? We were just grateful... and we still are. BTS has millions of followers on every social media platform. How do you interact with your fans online? What kind of connections are you making? We mostly interact with our Twitter messages by uploading selfies, [sharing] music recommendations and street fashion photos, etc. It’s about our daily life as a band on tour — and also as a group of silly friends who make fun of one another backstage. We don’t really get to reply to fans on a regular basis because there are just so many of them. But we do try to read all the reactions and replies. It’s also always interesting and inspiring for us to see what they create for us. Why do you think you’ve been able to build such a massive online fanbase? How did it happen? Everyone asks us that question. It’s a team effort taken from what happens to us in our everyday life. It’s not easy to run a social media account over a long period of time, but we love communicating with our fans every day and night. For example, I use the hashtag #RMusic to introduce or recommend a song I like, and I’ve been doing that for a long time. I love music and I truly enjoy sharing with our fans. Music transcends language. BTS communicates with our fans by staying true to ourselves and believing in music every day. How does having this huge fandom impact your approach to music and to what you sing about? BTS fans — the "ARMY" — tell us about their feelings, failures, passions and struggles all the time. We are often inspired by [them], because we try to write about how real young people — like the seven of us — face real-life issues. Most of our music is about how we perceive the world and how we try to persist as normal, average human beings. So our fans inspire us and give us a direction to go as musicians. And of course, their love and support keeps us going. How is BTS different from other big K-pop groups? Is it your music, your engagement with supporters, or something else? I can’t speak for other artists; every group has a different approach. For us, it will always be important to keep working hard, dancing better, writing better songs, touring and setting an example. A lot of people say this, but it's really true for us: we are living a dream, all seven of us, being able to pursue what we love. We strive to [put] everything into our music. Our lyrics deal with real issues that face all humans: choices in life, depression, self-esteem. And the fans know that we are there for them, and they are there for us. What’s next? What are you most excited for? Well, we definitely continue to have big dreams. We tour all over the world, but the shows in the U.S. really opened our eyes to so many new things in the States. And when we won the Billboard Music Award, we were so honored and got to meet so many artists that we love and admire that we can’t wait to return to the States. link the bolded part, he knows what we know....i cry

thank you TRANS: [non-no August issue] 4 Questions to BTS JIMIN 1. Hobbies etc. that you're into now, way to spend your day-offs? Playing my hobbies which are billiards & bowling with friends and gathering at home playing computer games. Whoever wins that time differs, so whatever I do me not being the best is for certain (laughs). 2. Tell us your fashion style I'm the type who wears western type of clothes for several months if I find a good style. These days, I like simple fashion such as shirts + slacks and white shirts + denims. However, I haven't decided yet as to what kind of style should I do for this year's summer.....It seems like once I start shopping I will buy different clothes (laughs), I will think carefully and I will go shopping. 3. Favorite scent Scent of flowers and the smell of meat when being roasted.....I like natural smell, so I don't wear perfume that much. The refreshing smell of the diffuser in our room is my favorite. However, my roommate, J-HOPE-san is particular about that type of smell more than me. 4. Japanese movie, drama, anime etc. that you're attached to As for manga and anime, we should keep an eye on famous ones. As for novels, I just recently bought "Reisei to Jônetsu no Aida." I look forward in reading it! V 1. Hobbies etc. that you're into now, way to spend your day-offs? Classical, jazz, opera, R&B, hip-hop, EDM, regardless of genre. I particularly like Hisaishi Joe-san's "Summer" now. Tatatatatantata~n (starts to sing). I want to listen to a live piano performance (of it) someday. 2. Tell us your fashion style The item I often wear is shirt. I have several pieces of designs with simple to unusual prints. The traveling bag I bought in New York this spring too, it's my favorite. I'm using it carefully! 3. Favorite scent There are many instances when I chose refreshing & relaxing scents for perfumes. I use several types to match my fashion. 4. Japanese movie, drama, anime etc. that you're attached to I recently finished all the episodes of the drama "Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu!" I like the weekly hug scene between the heroine and her contract marriage partner every Tuesday. I thought I've seen that male character somewhere, and when I searched, I was surprised that it's Hoshino Gen-san, the artist whose music I usually listen to. By the way, I like Hoshino Gen-san's "Nichijou." I'm also practicing "Koi" dance! JUNGKOOK 1. Hobbies etc. that you're into now, way to spend your day-offs? Recently, I enjoy playing FPS (kind of shooting game). I play 3-4 hours every day, and in the blink of an eye I don't have time to sleep (laughs). That and I always listen to music. I also easily get into music like future bass, so if anything there's a bit of seemigly sad mood, I prefer peacefully heart calming melodies. 2. Tell us your fashion style I like big silhouettes such as parkas, and color black. I think I don't change the things I wear that much including summer. The genre is different, but I feel RAP MONSTER-san and J-HOPE-san's dressing well, I think it's cool. 3. Favorite scent The scent of the wind and greenery the moment spring arrives. Long time ago, on a spring day, I went biking along the river while listening to music together with RAP MONSTER-san and V-san. I felt the unique beginning of spring's atmosphere, my heart gets excited when I remember that day, it becomes an enjoyable feeling. 4. Japanese movie, drama, anime etc. that you're attached to I like Japanese animes, and particularly "HaiKyu!!" which JIN-san also likes. It's also helpful in studying Japanese.

i dont know how to break it down easily, think of it as one big company (UMJ) which has many labels operating under its name. we know that initially they were introduced to be working under universal and a mention of def jam japan...i dont know the deal, but perhaps that's how they work it out, at the onset they need to make some kind of hype, & eventually changes might have happened (perhaps change assignments etc)....at first we knew both BTS and AK-69 are under def jam japan, right? but accdg to the website, AK-69 is listed under Universal International. so for us not to be confused, let's have the mother name (UMJ) they are affiliated with Digital Adventures, a sub-company of Keyeast....they mainly handle their fan club (https://bts-official.jp/ ) , DA also owns Korean channel KNTV and Asian channel DATV, so these channels can support bangtan related content, for events they managed the 2016 Power of Korea concert where bangtan is included

this exactly! just in the recent hanasaka times guesting they were introduced as "BTS, who is very popular in Japan, Korea, and furthermore, the world!"...the being radical and edgy worked in their favor and since has maintained in the eyes of their JPN fans...they are always if not usually introduced as a hip-hop boys group, true to their roots even now in TV shows and articles, despite having music that has evolved in the recent years...and just the things that we like are what their JPN fans like too, the emphasis on synchro, they are naturally cute in their own ways, the influx of sns contents that even a dance practice video uploaded is a big thing, and of course the members' participation in making their music.

this isn't something new i think, they've done it in previous years whenever they have schedule (fanmeet or concert) in cities outside Tokyo, it just really looks overwhelming now because of the amount of schedules they have, but imo there's no way that they wont do it since this is like the longest time they are in JPN with a tour scheduled closely to one another + active promotion for the newest single. what's noteworthy this time is the inclusion of non tv/magazine promos just like what you mentioned, it's good for them because the scope of their audience is getting wider, not just confined to females and the young generation. Digital Adventures has been doing well considering the acts theyve handled, they have good connections and BTS has a lot of credentials to offer the media (albums, charts, YT, SNS, BBMA etc) so i think the management can easily propose to media outlet, hence, guesting, interview, etc. this is also a very good way for them to expose themselves more since they definitely have a large following and have future plans in JPN, the boys have been working hard to improve their communication skills (tae/sg watches dramas, jm watches anime, rm teaches and practices with jm, jn/hobi speaks it when there's opportunity/ jk studies thru his app) and if they continue to do so and be really good at it, more possibilities in the future can actually happen for their JPN audience.
