The Rickey & G-Man series by Poppy Z. Brite
I really needed a break reading Worm (that pace is exhausting af reading it as a book) and that series was perfect for it, more character driven and with a certain slice of life feeling.
-
BTW, does somebody know "Inmortals After the Dark"? 'Cause Kresley Cole should really stop creating new characters when she already has a diverse amount of them waiting to get their HEA. If new creatures keep popping out then I´m not sure if it´s worthy to keep with the series anymore....
Can someone recommend me a historical novel? I am not lying when I say I got hundreds of books (downloaded) but somehow I don´t know where to start: Kings, Egypt, Greece, The War of the Roses, Queens, Rome, WW 2, Templars, Medieval, Spies, Warriors, Crusades.....damn, life is so full of books but I don´t know what to pick

yes, but tbh I started several different Paranormal Romance series at once when I was younger and at this point (all series getting really long) it is really getting hard to keep track. Sometimes I can't remember charas or what happened in the books before, even more if I wait one or two years until I read the next book. This is getting even worse if the authors suddenly use insignificant charas that only got small mentions before or new ones. So I am slowly losing interest in a lot of them (besides Nalini Singh ones, I LOVE her)
I will probably read some of them again tho, when I am in the mood, because I enjoy binging such series a lot more than reading each when it's released
historical: WW2 I found Night by Elie Wiesel really really good also The Book thief of course, the narrative is brilliant; sorry if you already read these~

Abercrombie - I only read his YA series, Half A King is the first book, and I like it a lot. Lots of intelligent characters and action! I might give The Blade Itself a try next time but the synopsis doesn't interest me very much. XD
Sanderson - ah he's my favourite author so I highly recommend everything he wrote, but I think the best place to start is the Mistborn trilogy. I hope you enjoy reading!
Abercrombie - ohhh I didn't even know that he had a YA series, I just looked at it and will definetly put it on my list. Seems as if the gritty is a little toned down from his First Law series and that sounds a lot more appealing for me
Sanderson-
does that triologie have a happy end? I read comments a few years ago about fantasy and one person was like the twist when all the charas die at the end like in Mistborn and I was just ughhhh. who spoilers like that in comments, really now? but it stuck, so when I looked at his books I asked myself if it's save for me to read them
. He has so many good reviews ....I hate books without a hapy end, I know they work for some peope and can also be really good but I just can't do it. I read to get a break from reality and sth that brings me down for weeks isn't really the way lol

Any fantasy readers here? Sanderson, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, Peter Brett?

Rothfuss - I am still waiting for the third book in his triology until I will start it, I read the first 50? pages or so and loved !!!! it. It totally captures you and thought "oh I will only have to wait a few months (I didn't knew how long he took between the first two at that time)" <_> well.... I am happy I waited; I hate to have years between book of a series

same reason I will never read GRRM
Abercrombie- dnf'ed 'The Blade itself', didn't really capture me
Peter Brett- yesss, didn't read the fourth one of his series yet, is already on my kindle for the next time I am in the mood for it~
Sanderson- definetly plan to sometimes soon, not sure which series I will try but at least from him I know the next one (if the series is not finished) comes soonish

I must say I am not the biggest fan of most Epic Fantasy series, I like Urban a lot more and when I was younger YA fantasy like Tamora Pierce, Christopher Paolini or Jim Butchers Codex Alera (it's shelved a lot more as Epic but I really think of it more as a YA tbh)
(I am so dissapointed with current YA trends, it's not even funny)

I am so annoyed @ amazon, I decided to get a new kindle paperwhite, mine is already a few years old now and they had it cheaper the whole week, but their quality control is utter s***. I am already on my third try now, because the other two had both a yellow tint and I sent them back. I think they just don't care because people that never had a kindle before wouldn't know the difference, but really this is just rediculous.

(not my pic)
it's just really not ok for such a big company to sent out such different qualities and not do anything about it!!!!!

I hope just because the Op of that Nazi thread posted in here doesn't mean there won't be warning points,
that thread was immature & offensive af and the OP paniced only becaus the reactions were so negativ...
even if it was out of context, to even make a clickbait about this topic and to be so immature about it with that gif.... juts ughhhh...
I think there should be a punishment for sth like that, especically because the OP is a staff member

the first Full Metal Achemist Brotherhood one,
I love the song sooo much and it's the only reason I didn't skip it (what I do by all others, even the visual stunning ones)

This makes me curious how other countries translate American novels. Would they feel confused with the minor cultural references?

mhhh I think the differences were more because it was translated into British English, I guess? (because it's in London)
if it's a translation from English into German I wouln't know cause the translator would just use the most common German word for it or the one that fits best into the sentence so that it flows good (I wouldn't know if the original was AE or BE).
the problem from German to English with the sentence structure could be that the German language uses a lot of long sentences with dependent clauses and that is not as common in English.
And cultural, mhhhhh if it's sth about the history of a word (like how one word is influenced because of it's history and how it was used in the past) maybe, either the translator would try to find sth similar or I just wouldn't get it. but in this case I also wouldn't reconize that there was a deeper meaning cause I just don't know it.
but besides that I don't think there would be big cultural things that could throw me off
for me the problem is more that there are nuances that can be lost in the translation and it depends a lot on the translator how good it feels in the end (for example the translation or Pride and Prejudice, if you compare the first sentence of the German translation, there are astonishing differences that can change the feeling completly. Of course this is pretty extrem, because the writing is more difficult than most books but it's just a examble )
if the translator is good tho, it just feels like a German book

Maybe not translation issues but awkward sentence structures and cultural differences. You know, like the little things such as "mobile" instead of "cell phone" or "loo" instead of "bathroom". I'm American.

I'm so glad I found her trilogy. I'll check out her latest one and see if it's in my local library. Thanks!

I feel like there's some translation issues in the English version because some sentences are arranged weirdly. I still love the story.
uhhhh that sucks OTLLL
one of the reasons I am readingg mainly in Enlish right now is that I get really bothered by some translations.
Sometimes it changes the whole tone of the author or the wording is just weird
well at least they let us enjoy stories from all over the world, so it's not too bad I guess~
What's the new trilogy called in English?
Silver trilogy
here is the goodreads site, the first book seems to be 'Dream a Little Dream'

Have any of guys read the Ruby Red trilogy by Kerstin Gier? I just found the first book in my local library one day and I became intrigued with the storyline. The main plot revolves a girl who didn't know she has the time traveling gene in her family because her family all along thought it's her cousin that has it, and then she gets into these adventures in the past with her male time traveling partner. The trilogy has vague and mysterious prophecies regarding the time travelers, a love/hate relationship between the time traveling partners, eccentric family members, and a complicated family tree.
I'm on the 3rd book right now, and I think this is one of my favorite YA trilogies I have read. I have the English version of the original German, but the characters are from London.
yesssssss
I read it a few years back in German and I loved how she got everything together in the thired book and how all the questions were answered.
I am not the biggest fan of the recent YA themed books but hers were really great and I loved how she did the time travel~
I also know that she started another fantasy triology after this one, I didn't read it yet tho

I really wish I would't see topics of people I ignored,
isn't there a way to somehow fix that in the ignore system?

I don't get people voting for it when we have so great options like 4, 5 and 6 OTLLLLL

Sooooo I was kind of having a shitty day, and I was ranting about it to my friends on my phone while working. But then somebody came and brightened it up for me. I have a customer who is moving away in a few weeks, she's always a nice polite lady, she came in today while I was on my phone and placed two books on my counter and said I could have them since she noticed I love reading. She said she is going to bring me more since she was planning on donating them but then remembered me and thought she would ask if I wanted them. Mind you these are romance books and I don't normally read them because of the cheese factor, but it's the thought that counts. One of them looks like a horror mix romance thingy so it looks interesting, the other is a Nora Roberts book, I've never read anything by her, but she's pretty popular.
I will miss this lady.
ohhhhh I love her, I read her a lot 7-8 years ao
She was probably one of the first romance authers I got really obsessed with.
I remember finding her on coincidence in my libary and than reading everything from her they had
I went home with half her shelf or sth one time

the good old times <3
when I still found my books without reading a review or comment about them online, somehow I was a lot less critical about what I read than.
I don't know, I wish there was a Englisch libary somewhere near me so that I could do that again sometimes OTLLLL
with ebooks you somehow see the reactions of other people completly automatically, the rating system of amazon and goodreads is really starting to bother me. I wish I could hide them...
maybe I should look around the anglistik part of our uni-libary they could have some stuff~
the lady sounds so nice!!! nothing over a book suprise to make a day better!!!!

this is a really random question -- that doesnt really have to do with books, but more just reading in general ><""
while reading, esp. print books, when you guys come across a word you dont know the meaning of, do u guys like stop to look it up or just keep on reading and forget about the word lol
i dont know what's the best way to handle these situations
thank you in advance ><
I read a lot in English and there I often just skip it when it doesn't seem importent, when it comes again and again I just use the kindle funktion to translate (I am sorry can't say about print books, I only read ebooks now and that already for years)
if it's in German I would look it up in the kindle immediately cause that only happens really rarely and I am curious than
