  1. Based on their reactions and the gossip, I think

ETM and Tencent came to a conclusion some time ago, Renyu didn't seem hopeful or surprised by her results.

Zixuan was emotionally prepared for the possibility of not getting in, but there was still some hope that Tencent could come to agreement with OACA. Meiqi was still rooting for her to get in during the backstage before the ep, and Meiyun and Aojuan fancams showed they were wrecked when Zixuan didn't get in.

Qiuzi was wrecked. I think their company/Tencent was choosing between pushing Qiuzi or pushing Mengjie. And at first it was Qiuzi, but the final week they went with Mengjie.

Sunnee and everyone else thought she wasn't going to make it, so she was wrecked too hearing her name.

  2. After Day Day Up recording

Lol fans were asking where she's going next, if she's going home, where she'll be hanging out in Yuelu, and she cutely replied I'm not telling you!

Happened to see leaked pics of her on set, though seems they've been deleted already. But Zixuan dances! There's a male next to her who at best I assume is Yibo, but it wasn't clear. Her outfit was promising for it to be a dance leaning more to the cool side too.

  3. And can OACA reveal something about the future of DS98 besides photoshoots and stuff because we need music for them to stay relevant? Or an OACA TV for the girls?

Tbh at this point I would be happy even for a DS98 feature on an AWAKEN-F track or some dorky OACA web drama tgt

So waiting for this. OACA, the longer you wait, the colder these 3 will become. Even if you were caught off guard and didn't have a plan B for these turn of events, have them livestream, get together a small crew for a reality series. And in the meantime start working on the music debut side, finding music, choreography, producer, etc etc.
  4. Doesn't this just go to show Tencent has been a mess with contracts this entire time? You can hate on Mnet for the evil editing and whatnot, at least they had their shit together and weren't negotiating or disputing over contracts leading up to the finale and even post-show now.

Tencent is a huge ass company, I won't be surprised one bit if they've been fully taking advantage of the power discrepancy and bullying the small companies into doing what they want.

  6. 高能少年团 > é«˜èƒ½å°‘年团第二季

Season 1 I watched for the cast, season 2 I watched for guests. Nothing against Yang Zi but most of the original team are busy with other projects.

Thanks for links! The concept of the show sounds like it'd have good potential. I was originally surprised seeing some of the names associated with the show but the seemingly lack of buzz around it. Is Yangzi the main MC? The link lists him as a guest role.

  7. Thanks for your detailed explanation, I definitely feel like I understand Chinese tv channels better, very interesting!

Hope Wanghan can take care of Douzi well and help her get some entertaining screentime! Lol maybe she might do her Yibo impression again...although it's a tad dry haha.

Those shows you mentioned sound way more educational than they do entertaining hahahaha. But maybe if I'm bored enough for something to watch, I'll give it a go. I can improve my Chinese at the least.

Yeah, it's unfortunate for her the disadvantage of being dancing focused. But I mean, there are people like Show Luo and Yibo who do great-decent for themselves and they are heavily dance focused so it's possible. I think it's advantageous that there aren't many female celebrities who are most known for their dancing (at least that I know), so she would be able to stand out in this way. Was Street Dance of China not that popular? 这就是街舞 I believe is the Chinese name.

But of course, looking long term, Douzi can't rely on her dancing skill. She will need good songs to be able to promote, she'll need to be good at variety to keep getting asked to guest on shows and maybe hopefully land a permanent cast on a show one day. Seeing the lack of movement from OACA on girl group plans gets me stuck in a rut because it doesn't make much sense for OACA to not give Zixuan up to Tencent for 2 years given their lack of immediate girl group plans. I've been reading that OACA never had girl group plans to begin with, they signed on the 3 DS98 girls because of the P101 show.

The 2 everyone feels is too much of a pity to not make the final group, Zixuan and Renyu playing around in bts, they're so cute and I didn't know they were this friendly.

And hahaha different versions of Douzi's signature

There's theme song Douzi on the left, kimchi Douzi in the middle, and Douzi without circle lenses on the right.

  8. Wangju literally became a viral meme and it was the main reason why the show started to get known in the first place. Before Wang Ju blew up, the show barely even trended in Weibo from what I read from several users. She also had A LOT of support from LGTB+ communities. And well, everyone saw how Qiuzi, Renyu and Zixuan fanbases spent tons of money in placing them in a high position, so it's undeniable they have big fanbases so they should be getting at least some endorsement/gig.

Wangju's huge rise in rank was because she gained so many casual fans outside of those who watch P101. It was not dedicated fanbase support that shot her up. Qiuzi's support came more from casual viewer rather than having a large fanbase, P101 fans talked so much smack talk towards her and she didn't have many online fans to stand up for her.

  9. The difference is that you basically affirmed that China101 had more public awareness but your "evidence" is basically the same as mine (people we know, random videos, etc) so what's the truth then? The only thing I can say is that so far, IP guys are definitely getting much more endorsements and gigs, and to me personally, that's a way more reliable indicative of brand power and general public appeal.

And yes, a big fanbase can obviously help and I never denied that but it's not the main reason why they're getting CFs. Like I said before, even Awaken-F (OACA boys) that doesn't even have that big of a fanbase landed a Sephora CF recently and I think some clothing brand CF as well. Honestly, if it's as simple as solid fanbase = CF deal then the pd101c girls with really solid fanbases like ETM, JC, Zixuan, Wang Ju, Qiuzi, etc should be getting some endorsements too.

Wangju and Qiuzi big fanbases? No not at all the case. Even Renyu and Zixuan fanbases, top 11 by the end of P101, but how big will they continue to be if these girls don't release material fast.

General public will only stay interested if a celeb/group makes representative works. Fanbases will more readily support regardless. No it's not simply about fanbase size. But why are Chinese entertainment companies rumored to be more keen on boy groups compared to girl groups, if as you said both boy and girl groups should be able to be equally profitable? I think the key is that it's harder for Chinese girl groups to reach the same relative success as Korean girl groups because of the obstacle to achieving "popular appeal" due to the state of c-ent landscape and how idol music fits in.

  10. It's not the same evidence tho, because from what I've seen many vloggers can interview like 90-100 people in a day but only include the ones that they want / that are more convenient for what they want to prove, so it's a VERY biased point of view. As an ARMY, I've seen people using this "street interview" argument against BTS to claim they're still unknown by the GP in Korea, but their evidence was clearly biased street interviews that only included the "negative" responses. Meanwhile I'm talking about friends with family/friends living there and that don't even care about idols saying they see IP's faces everywhere endorsing a lot of things.

And I never said Oner is super popular but for a non-top 9 group they've already appeared in popular TV shows and landed tons of CF/magazine deals. I'm not seeing the same response with the non-top 11 pd101 girls so far.

I think my "most" was different to your "most" though. You meant most popular except CXK, while I meant more popular than your average contestant, not than the top 5-6 of IP. I honestly don't think they're more popular/recognizable than the Yuehua trio either.

I disagree with your last statement. Girl groups can be equally profitable if they have enough popular appeal. In kpop, girl groups usually endorse more brands than boygroups (except the super popular ones like EXO/BTS/W1), despite boygroups having generally larger fanbases. For example, NCT or Seventeen have much bigger fanbases than say, Momoland or AOA but who's getting more CFs? Like I said, fandom alone can't get you big CF deals so if NPC and other IP boys are getting big CF deals is definitely not because of their fanbase alone. Why is so hard for some of you to admit that they're indeed popular? Idgi.

First point, I also mentioned people I know there. And some of the vids I saw were made by people who are fans of the show, so why edit it to make it seem unpopular among the interviewees...

Listen, we are clearly at disagreement about their general public awareness and I don't see the good in going in circles like this when we're not getting anywhere. Much less, I'm not even heavily invested in either group and my interest in this debate was over after I put in my 1 cent.

My final point is a general point about idol groups in the c-ent landscape. I've said nth times now that indeed NPC have proven to be successful, why is it so hard to admit that yes, huge fanbase support will get you even further.. The difference between Korea and China is that idol sector in kpop is very well developed. Girl groups in China will not have the ease of girl groups in Korea because idol groups are not yet that mainstream of a concept and genre of music in China. Releasing bops is largely where Korean ggs are able start building their success and impact from.

  11. But this doesn't really prove anything though? It's like if you interview another random sample of people and they say they don't even know Meixuan or YCY. In fact, I've read that a lot of people literally only knew Wang Ju from the whole show. Interviewing a random small sample of people is never indicative of actual popularity, while the number of gigs and CF deals that they get is much more indicative of their brand power. Like I said, even non-top 9 groups like Oner have already appeared in popular variety shows and got TONS of magazine shoots and CF deals.

And no, you literally said that all those contestants were more popular than ALL IP guys, when neither of them are anywhere close to CXK or FCC popularity, unless you think that their 7-11M of followers in Weibo are all "idol stans". Also, strong fandom alone can't get you so many opportunities and CF deals. You can have many fans but if you don't have a good brand power and public appeal, why would big companies want to hire you? Some of the post-IP groups that are getting CFs like Awaken-F don't even have that big of a fandom, but some of their members have enough visibility/brand power to get the group a CF.

Also, I agree it's still early for the 101 girls to get gigs, but if I'm not mistaken some of the IP guys were already getting gigs literally days after the show ended. The KFC deal was already "prepared" for the winner group before this was even created.

I don't see why NPC/IP has to be even brought here or in RG threads at all anyway? You can perfectly support your faves without dragging other groups and downplay them to rise your faves. And by "you" I don't mean you in particular, but several users here and in the RG thread in general. Meanwhile, I literally don't see anyone in the NPC bringing RG at all...

You quite literally used the same exact line of evidence about knowing people in China to "prove" your point that NPC are very popular and now are saying that when I've heard people have a different viewpoint that it proves nothing. My level of understanding of c-ent, my bet is that majority of China's population does not know of a group called Oner.

Verbatim the quotes that I had "MeiXuan Chaoyue Wangju likely have more name awareness than most/all the IP boys, but they'll likely lose out on weibo followers." and " But besides CXK?...I'd guess the most popular from P101 are more known than the others from IP. "

which is the same exact meaning as what you said with ""Wang Ju, YCY and Meixuan are more well known than most IP guys,"

I did have "most/all' in the first quote, but the slash and inclusion of both words was to simplify the exception of CXK.

Why is it that industry insiders didn't think/ still may not think girl groups can be profitable. Why does it seem or why is it rumored that entertainment companies put more investment and energy into making boy groups? This is how I see it. If you have a dedicated fanbase, you can easily be a sustainable group that consistently generates a profit. If your fanbase is large enough, 3rd parties companies can generate profit from giving them opportunities. Girl groups tend to have the pro of having wider appeal across demographics, but with girl group sound missing from mainstream music for so long, without as strong of fanbases, it's a risky road to try to make good money by producing a girl group.

  12. But how can you even know they have "the edge" if you don't live there? I know for sure than lots of casual people know about IP/NPC because I have friends whose families/friends live there, and they confirmed that a lot of "random people" know about the show and the names of some of the most popular contestants (including lots of the non-top 9 ones).

We're talking about general terms here, and yeah, obviously Wang Ju, YCY and Meixuan are more well known than most IP guys, but in general, there's much more IP boys getting solo gigs/endorsements than the 101 girls. And I'm not even talking about the top 9, but other top 20-30 guys like Yuehua OT4 (esp Bi Wenjun), Banana OT7, Zhou Yanchen, Zhu Xingjie, Jeffrey, Zheng Ruibin, Zhou Rui, the Awaken-F guys, the Oner guys, etc are all getting A LOT of endorsements/pictorials/magazine shoots. Do you think they'll give them such gigs if they were unknown?

Not to mention that if IP didn't have impact in general, why are they doing a S2 and S3 then?

And I wasn't writing Wang Ju off. Just saying that despite her popularity as a viral meme I'm not seeing her getting so many CFs/gigs so far. I actually like her and I would like her career to progress and not end up only remembered as the viral meme.

I don't know for sure, even for someone who lives in China like Zhang SING, you can't know for sure something like this that doesn't have an exact way to measure. It's my conclusion based on the info that I can find. This includes, for example- I know some people in China as well who don't know the names of these idols. I've seen reaction videos of vloggers going to the streets to ask people questions about these shows and contestants, and people didn't even know Linong which made me surprised at the time. Of course with the size of China, I'm well aware how easily skewed this small sample can make my perception. That's why I'm very conscious about saying "I think" or "likely".

"Wang Ju, YCY and Meixuan are more well known than most IP guys," This is close to verbatim the line that I started my point on but several jumped in to disagree on. Anyways, as far as in general, I think 1. it's been really soon since P101 ended to totally count it against girls for not getting gigs yet. 2. Strong fandom support can hugely help celebs get opportunities. 3. Never said the guys are unknown or that IP is not successful. It generated a lot of profit and the potential for future profit is still huge, iQiyi would be dumb to miss out on more chances to generate this amount of revenue.

Also, idk the details of the contracts, but it seems NPC are more free to have individual promotions and gigs whereas Tencent managed to get a tight leash on most/all of the girls for more or less exclusive group promotions.

  13.

Let's be real, idols are not a typical mainstream general public awareness sector of c-ent. China is huge and idol culture is far from taking the country by storm. Grab random people off the street, adults with jobs to work and families to feed, how many actually follow and care about idols like this. I never argued awareness translates directly to support. And people are exaggerating that we're completely writing off IP/NPC's success (unless not directed at me) which goes to show the defensiveness. Not saying IP/NPC have no general public awareness, just that I believe P101 has the edge in this area.

Yes there were people at the airports to see eliminated girls off. Without a doubt, I don't need to see pics of airport turnout, I will know of course the boys will be bigger because the trend is they have larger and more dedicated fan support. Airport turnout is very much a fanbase type of indicator, so idk why it's getting brought up.

It's been like a week since P101, while I'm not certain of Wangju's future career success, I still wouldn't write Wangju off so easily like this. She got signed, insiders say she's getting good resources. Recall seeing a recent picture of her at an event, I believe it was a Maybelline or something of the likes and I think she's going to New York for some fashion event(?) I don't follow her news super closely, just saw this in passing so my details are fuzzy. For sure there has been good post-show movement from her side though.

  14. General public awareness isn't easily measurable. I don't doubt NPC boys are all doing well for themselves together and independently. I still think P101 and contestants did a better job breaking into general public consciousness. Primarily based off of views, audience demographics, and just what I can tell from people around me and the reaction videos that I watch. Starting from the mentor lineup alone you can have a good guess that P101 audience reach would be broader than IP.

At the end of the day it's not like I have any particular bone in this fight... I don't consider myself a Rocket Girls fan, none of the people I mentioned in this discussion so far are my favorite, and there are people on both sides that I view favorably. I'm not trying to belittle one side or defend another. Nothing wrong with debating about which group is more popular or has wider reach, it's something to try to measure, something of interest, and without a doubt what industry insiders are doing to hedge their bets, judge the trends, and gauge how to invest and make money in the future. It only becomes a touchy or sensitive subject if you're invested in any one side.

Of course, I am a bit over the topic though. Can't really "prove" general public popularity so who actually knows who's right. Ya'll have your opinions, I have mine.

  15. Yeah sure!laugh.png

I've never heard 高能少年团 either lol. It is a relatively new variety show. Although for MCs they have a huge IT boy Wang Junkai, the show is not successful because the plots are too dry and mc's are legit lacking in sense of variety.

No matter what 高能少年图 is aired on Zhejiang TV. Previously Zhejiang TV is not a famous TV station, but via the Voice of China and Running Man they currently can be compared to Hunan TV. If I have to rank thoes TV stations, I would go with CCTV > Hunan TV > Zhejiang TV (FYI like ten years ago when Super Girl was still a hit, it was like CCTV > Hunan TV >>> others)

That being said, although the show is not that popular (compared to others), Douzi is at least on one of the top 3 platforms in China, which is far better than previous situationslaugh.pnglaugh.png

As for 天天å‘上, it was aired since 2008 and was regarded as the two "trump card" variety shows of Hunan TV (the other being å¿«ä¹å¤§æœ¬è¥). Both are the king of view ratings on Friday and Saturday respectively. Unlike å¿«ä¹å¤§æœ¬è¥, which features idols and artists, and also is disliked by many people who think it "simple", "brainless", "only kid/uneducated people would watch this", 天天å‘上 has a better reputation. That's because 天天å‘上 features China's tradition and invites lots of "normal people" just like you and me, like college students, pilots, engineers, voice actors, inventors, etc.

However some years ago, 天天å‘上 sorta became a "promotion show" of other shows of Hunan TV, like Singer, Happy Boy, Dad where are we going etc and audience gradually lost their interests. Later on they invited artists more and more and lost its features, so the view rating has been going down constantly. After the Taiwanese host 欧弟 left and singer-composer 大张伟 joined in, the show was remade but still can't shine out anymore.

After all 天天å‘上 has a high status in my heart, although not many people watch it nowadays lollaugh.png I'm quite happy that Douzi can be on it and Hunan TV, after all it's in her hometown. And 汪涵 is a genius at dialects and he's been dedicated at promotiong Hunan dialect and culture across the whole country. I'm sure 汪涵 will love Douzi very much and the show must be kidding on Douzi's accent a lothurrplz.png  Looking forward to the chemistryahmagahplz.png

Oh, nice! Zixuan landing back to back guestings on 2 of the most popular channels in China! From your explanation, I'm very excited as well to see her and Wanghan now! I saw from c-fans that Douzi is a fan of Wanghan haha. Hope they have a fun interaction. I'm also looking forward to a potential Yibo-Zixuan dance moment. I saw clips of Chengxiao and Jieqiong dancing on this show, so there's a chance Zixuan can also, just hope it can be an impressive dance.

So what shows does CCTV have? Feel like all the popular Chinese shows I know of are on Hunan and Zhejiang.

I think Douzi will be able to really excel in a variety type show that's more a reality show, so her natural personality can come out better, and one where she's a permanent guest so she can come out of her shell better and get closer with the other people on the show. It's unfortunate, I don't think Chinese entertainment has a lot of shows that are good for idols to guest on. But let me know if you think differently, after all I only know a handful of their big shows.

Dance show would be really good, but at the end of the day, it will only provide temporary insulation to her popularity and doesn't lead to other and sustainable opportunities very well.

Also love how newest comments on Girls! Fighting videos of Zixuan are asking the Tencent make up artist to be replaced with the one from Dragon TV.

Zixuan's visuals got completely destroyed by the Tencent makeup artist not gna lie

Okay, yesss, like what's up with Tencent's styling?? Douzi is adorable, girl next door pretty/cute, that can look great with nice styling, but she has such a strong impression from viewers of the show of being ugly. Well..also influenced by Douzi's own self confidence about her appearance.

Latest spotting of Zixuan, she was out with friends at a place with claw machines

  16. The really accurate insider from Douban actually said after the final episode that Wang Ju has a brighter future than the girls, so although I don't entire believe she wasn't just mouthing off to the fans who all hate her now, I'm pretty curious what Wang Ju has lined up in the recent future.

Wangju is someone I'd look out for. I think a lot of P101 fans hate her, but a lot of casual viewers and street fans root for her. She can potentially have a standing career, especially if she has people throwing money at her and giving her good opportunities.

Wangju, Aojuan, MeiXuan (not in order) are my picks for most potential for good long term careers.

  17. No, Even the Yuehua boys in IP are more popular than the girls. Fan Chengcheng alone is more popular than Mei Qi.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the IP boys are less popular...

P101 had more views right? And their audience included both male and female viewers, ie broader appeal. Majority of the people who recognize IP boys are going to be fangirls. Fan Chengcheng's huge awareness I think is in large part because of Fan Bingbing. I get the impression that general public can name more members off of P101 than they can off of IP.

Agree that lasting impact is what's really important here. It's incredibly difficult in China's entertainment environment for these fresh faced idols to try and make a lasting impact. We'll have to see how things shake out.

  18. Wangju maybe because she literally became a viral meme, but from what I've heard/read from chinese friends/people living in China, Cai Xukun is basically the it boy in China right now, so I don't think he has less public awareness than the ones you named. He's even placed above Luhan or Kris in recent popularity lists.

Even You Zhangjing that placed #9 was chosen to sing the OST of the most anticipated drama this year. I doubt someone with low public awareness get that privilege tbh.

No, Xukun is more popular than them. Even in terms of general awareness in China.

No one actually cares about Wang Ju.

Maybe so, I don't know as much. But besides CXK? I know there's a big popularity gap between him and the rest of IP boys. I'd guess the most popular from P101 are more known than the others from IP.

    The part regarding Douzi is:
"Haven't met Douzi in so long, as always she's exploding with cuteness!"

She is really so so fresh and baby faced with minimal makeup, so cute and pretty! Her face doesn't suit heavy makeup

  20. Douzi is gonna shoot Day Day Up!ahmagahplz.png

Yayyyyy!! Get those jobs Douzi ahmagahplz.png

I've never watched these shows, can you give an idea how big/popular 高能少年团 and 天天å‘上 are? I've heard of the 2nd one, never the 1st one before.
