[iNTERVIEW] 150206 SONAMOO for BTN International Doing good, doing well, SONAMOO the seven girl group members who wants to grow. Marking at exactly their one month anniversary as they stepped into the photoshoot studio, the girl group SONAMOO who’s vibe is of freshness, the new healing icon. Aiming to be the “Nations younger sister†they come with the intention of being loved. Only at a visual glance would you assume they’re cute and fresh but they’re actually a reversal of their image with their Deja Vu stage. Although this may be their first step towards their future they can assure everyone that there are still plenty of things they haven’t showed the fans yet. Q. SONAMOO’s official website shows a green moon rather than a pine tree, what’s the meaning behind that? Sumin: Before our debut we were released day by day for 7 of us. We promoted through the moons to create a full moon. Euijin: A full moon portrays a clear and full image. Q. The origin of the name SONAMOO Sumin: We had a voting at our company. We want to portray an image of evergreen and all-rounded. Minjae: After we thought about it, a group name with the letter ’s’ seems like a good idea. At first we had a voting between ‘Soahbae’ as well as ‘One Piece’ Q. After hearing the name, your first impressions were? High.D: At first when we heard it, if we were to name it for a girl group it would be weird. But as we continue to hear it over and over again, the impact was there. People were unable to forget the name and slowly overtime we grew fond of it. And we also liked it better than the rest of the names. D.ana: When I first heard it I was in a shock. But when I told my parents about it they actually liked it. It’s easy to remember, the meaning was good, and it was easy for people to say. Nahyun: “Ey, they wouldn’t†that was my first reaction. Although I did make an episode (T/N: meaning brought up something to the company) after a while I started to like it. Minjae: When our manager came up to us one day and told us “hey your name results are out†and he told us it was ‘SONAMOO’ I thought it was lying. I was panicking at the name but then after a while I grew to like it a lot. New Sun: I actually really liked it. Now because every group has an English name to have a Korean name it actually makes it sound more special. And although people hear it for the first time they would be shocked but it will stick with them for a long time. Euijin: When I told my parents they were extremely shocked “are you sure it’s really SONAMOO? It can’t be†But after I grasped the meaning behind it I liked it. Sumin: I was also in a state of shock. After releasing the name, for about two months I was in denial. At first when we have to do our introduction I wasn’t sure how to put “hello we’re SONAMOO†in natural form so I was super worried. But now I say that name very proudly. Q. Everyone in the group is very tall, how do they pick the members? New Sun: We don’t pick base on height. About two years ago we all auditioned to the company and got in. Q. Idol has to take care of their figure, any diet plans? Sumin: At lunch we eat salad and dinner we eat set boxes. There’s a park near our company so we go there to play and exercise. New Sun: Ever since we were trainees we do a lot of hiking. We usually walk from the bottom to the top summit of the mountains. Near our company there’s this mountain called the Yongbongsan mountain, we go there often. Q. In Inkigayo’s 800th special episode you covered a Shinhwa song. Whats your feeling? Nahyun: Before the stage even started Shinhwa-seniors was there too, and there were so many fans waiting. There were a lot of screaming as well so I was very shocked. Once there was a fan who reached up to D.ana’s shoulder and she was very nervous. We were so nervous to the point that we were scared and we sweat a lot (from nervousness). Euijin: I’m very honored. To be the only one who could be able to perform with Shinhwa senior made us feel even more special. And they helped us a lot. They told the fans to “love SONAMOO a lot†and cheered for us a lot. We practiced for this choreography for about a week. Q. Please introduce the songs on your album. High.D: Our title song is about meeting someone for the first time but falling in love instantly. It tells a story about a love that seems like forever. It has a catchy beat and will make you fall for the song. Minjae: The song ‘Everlasting Love’ is a song about generously giving love to that loved one without fail mixing it with a hip-hop sound. It’s a song that shows off the members voices respectively. Euijin: there’s a song called “Nation’s younger sister†which just like the title we want to be able to become a nation younger sister. A soft but catchy song. Q. Your debut song is a hip hop genre. What kind of songs do you want to do in the future? Sumin: We never really practiced for this or that concept, meaning we don’t have a specific concept we go for. We will pick whatever song suits us the most. New Sun: We will want to continue to showcase our different styles. Q. You all showed your charismatic charm on stage. Is there a member who can’t dance? Minjae: Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a ballad singer. I never dreamt about singing and dancing at the same time. But I got selected and put into a group and I had to learn dance. When I received the choreography for Deja Vu I cried non stop for at least 3 days. Thinking “I should dance well for this†I practiced for around 2 months. Q. You guys all listed different languages as hobbies, now that you’re gaining popularity overseas do you have any plans? Euijin: If we were given the chance to go overseas we would definitely go. We are currently learning languages diligently. We want to be a group that receives love from all over the world. Q. You guys debuted for a month, have you made any close celebrity friends? Sumin: I think I’m closer to Hyosung-senior, she takes really good care of us. On new year she texted us “Kids, happy new year†first and I guess that it means we have a good relationship. New Sun: I’m closer to Sunhwa senior. She recommends me a lot of things and my hairstyle was picked by her as well. Q. You’re all almost 20. What are dream dates? Euijin: Since I was young I was a trainee and I’ve always dreamt of dating. Dinner date and then we can walk along Gangnam where the streets are buzzing with people where we’ll share a scarf and wear matching couple clothes. Because when we’re a trainee we’re usually extremely busy during dinner time due to practice I want to have a dinner date. Q. A lot of your seniors are revealing their relationship. Do you think you will? New Sun: Until I’m at the age of marriage, I’ll reveal then. Q. If you were to go on a program which one would you go to? High.D: I am a huge fan of senior Lee Kwangsoo. Ever since I was a trainee I wanted to join “Running Manâ€. If I was able to couple with him on the show it would be such a huge honor. Minjae: I want to attend “Quiz to change the world†I’m working on my own special talents. Q. Sumin and Nahyun both appeared and showed their talents as a cameo in Hyosung senior’s drama. What kind of characters do you want to play in the future? Sumin: I want to show a present character that I am right now which is a student. A same aged character as the real me. Nahyun: I want to play the character of our senior Krystal f(x) where she played in the Heirs. A cute but dangerous character. Q. Your role model? Minjae: Ever since I was young BoA senior made me realize my dream. When I was in 4th grade she became my role model ever since. Sumin: Um Jeonghwa senior. Being in the industry for a very very long time and also acting as well. She’s very respectful. Euijin: Ivy senior is my role model. Singing is a definite to her powerful performance it’s all very perfect. I was very touched. Q. Girl group SONAMOO, what do you want to be known as?
