On an episode of ‘Hello Counselor’, an 11 year old elementary school student came on the show to speak about her complaint: she’s been attending 12 different after-school tutoring programs on top of attending school. She’s forced to study past midnight until 3am because of all these different programs and all her homework. When asked which programs these are, her mother didn’t know exactly either. The student complained, “I can feel that my body isn’t the same as it was before. I don’t really have an appetite anymore either.†She continued, “I’ve asked my parents to reduce the amount of tutors, but my mom just yelled at me, ‘Just go!’. My dad suggested I stop going to all of them, but my mom won’t listen to him.â€The mom claimed, “All mothers are the same. Mothers these days probably all send their children to the same amount of tutoring.â€â€”1. [+13258,-89] It’s not like sending her to all those tutors means she’ll definitely end up at Seoul University ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹2. [+11343,-69] Ha… Wait until she goes through puberty, that entire family is going to shake3. [+9840,-68] I feel so bad for her. She’s ruining her health because of her mom’s selfishness and she can’t live her life properly. I hope she understands that just going to a ton of tutors doesn’t mean she’ll necessarily do well4. [+9840,-68] She’s at that age where she should be running around having fun, not going to tutors;; if she continues at this pace, she’s not going to study well later on5. [+7619,-75] This is crazy. What is this? She probably can’t do anything well like that. It’s just a waste of money and you’re just making her suffer6. [+1486,-15] Students like that are the ones who kill themselves when they don’t do well on tests7. [+1425,-23] I’m sorry, but what’s the mom’s educational background? If the mom has gone through some education, she wouldn’t treat her daughter like that. If the daughter stops playing along, it’s game over8. [+1276,-15] This is a common monster amongst Korean families.. No one can blame anyone. That mom is a bit extreme, but there are a ton of mothers like that all around Korea9. [+1208,-11] I feel sorry for the husband, having to pay all that tuition10. [+1107,-3] Students like that who study that much in elementary school get too tired by junior high that they can’t study at all–Read more about South Korea's problematic after-school tutoring programs here.

“Entering Korea, a few places in mind, next year a surprising investmentâ€
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaNbzrVpRnY
Translated by: john @ www.onehallyu.com

The entertainment news has recently gotten noisy due to the news of Jessica being kicked out of idol girl group SNSD. Her agency had an issue with her recently launched Blanc & Eclare fashion line. There was one particular businessman who was at the center of it all: Jessica’s rumored to-be husband, ex of Hong Kong actress Jilian Chung — Tyler Kwon.
Kwon graduated with a degree in business management at Michigan University, and is the founder of ‘Coridel Capital Partners’, the headquarters of which reside in New York. He’s one of the few young, Korean CEOs on Wall Street. However, after being seen with Korean and Hong Kong celebrities, he’s become a noise-maker in the entertainment industry more than the business world. In an interview with us last week, Tyler said, “I am a business owner not a celebrity, so I’m receiving excessive attention.†He also said, “In the near future, I will be making a very surprising investment in the Korean entertainment industry.â€Q: There are rumors you’re a chaebeol.Tyler Kwon: My father served as a commissioned officer in the Korean military until he immigrated to America, where he ran a small business. I grew up in an average Korean home. I graduated school in America, and I was a foreign exchange student at Yonsei University. I currently live in Hong Kong.Q: When did you start working on Wall Street?Tyler: I started in 2002 under an investment bank Lazard. I was in charge of Mergers and Acquisitions and Restructuring advisory. In 2006, I left Lazard and started Coridel.Q: What kind of company is Coridel?Tyler: It’s divided into Coridel Capital Partners which focuses on Mergers and Acquisitions and investing, Coridel Entertainment which deals with business in the entertainment industry, and Coridel Foundation which is in charge of social contributions. It’s not that big, but our investment earnings rate is good, so it’s doing well.Q: What area does it mainly invest in?Tyler: Mainly production and distribution. In 2009, we started investing in entertainment. Since we were close with the stakeholders in that industry, we half-wittedly set foot in that industry. We’ve invested in Hollywood films ‘Passion Play’ and ‘Meskada’, and we’re working with a few large Hong Kong entertainment companies.Q: Do you come to Korea often?Tyler: Since I’ve been working with more businesses related to Korea lately, I’m coming here more often. I’ve recently conducted a lecture at Seoul University. I want to continue passing on my experience and knowledge to Korean students.Q: What are your plans for investing in Korea?Tyler: I want to connect Korean entertainment with different businesses in America, China, and Southeast Asia. We will be opening a branch in Seoul next year and will earnestly start investing. There are already a few companies we have in mind. We will be announcing soon a shocking, big-scale investment.Q: It’s been pointed out before that Hallyu is in its decline.Tyler: I believe that it’s difficult to continue growing it in Korea. But there are still a lot of opportunities in China and Southeast Asia. If we just change the way it is advanced overseas, it can definitely still be profitable.Q: What’s wrong with the current organization of the advancement Hallyu?Tyler: There are a lot of middlemen and stages you have to go through. For example, for a Korean singer to advance into China, they have to go through a handful of people in Korea and then go through more people in China, and then they can finally hold a concert or release an album. No matter how good the content is, if it has to go through so many stages, there’s a limit to how much it can expand. Using Coridel’s secure network, we can drastically lower the amount of work. It’s one of the reasons I want to invest in Korea.Q: Please explain ‘Blanc & Eclare’.Tyler: It’s a company that Jessica has always dreamed about. Coridel followed her proposal and invested, and we are acting as consultants. There are rumors that I’m driving the company behind the scenes, but that’s not true. It’s been a very long time since it launched overseas. In Korea, it’ll be launching in February at a famous mall.Q: There’s also rumors that you’re just using celebrities for your business.Tyler: I’m not a celebrity, I’m a business owner. I don’t know why I come up in entertainment news. The media, articles, and comments on the internet are making up stories. They’re almost making me out to be a fraud. We are currently working on a counterplan against all these malicious stories.Q: You post a lot of photos of yourself with celebrities on SNS.Tyler: I’m like everyone else in that I post pictures of myself with close friends. I have absolutely no intentions on using them to increase my brand awareness. If you break it down, there are probably more cases in which I helped them than there are cases in which they helped me.--TN: I apologize in advance if I got some business terms wrong. Please let me know if there's anything I should fix.-

“We heard it’s easy to steal money in Korea…†‘Thieves’ from Colombia
Translated by: john @ www.onehallyu.com

Summary: There is a rumor in Colombia that it’s easy to steal money in Korea. In Myoungdong, 3 Colombians recently broke into a store. When they were caught, they said, “We heard that it was easy to steal in Korea, so we came to Korea this past October. To all Koreans, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.â€

1. [+10415, -114] Scary how dumb these people are.. They should’ve spent that airplane ticket money doing something else…2. [+9493, -98] Don’t underestimate Korea… We have cctv ㅋㅋㅋㅋ3. [+9059, -850] Government, please try to maintain our nation’s image..4. [+1416, -19] Well ㅋㅋㅋㅋ It’s because our punishments are weak. They probably heard that rape and arson aren’t considered a big deal here, so they understood that as it being easy to commit burglary too. Just look at Oh Wonchoon. He kidnapped someone and chopped her into 300 pieces, and instead of being beheaded, he’s enjoying his time in jail ㅋㅋㅋ7. [+1142, -21] Shouldn’t the punishment of foreigners be more severe?8. [+1134, -26] ㅋㅋㅋㅋ How much of a pushover country do they see us as ㅋㅋㅋㅋ9. [+1113, -10] I’ve heard people coming here because it’s easy to earn money, but this is the first time I hear of people coming here because it’s easy to steal money10. [+1058, -23] Looks like they knew it was easy to steal money but they didn’t know it was easy to get caught. We have the best CCTVs, you dumbasses

In Korea, college entrance exams are in November and are taken in junior year of high school. So what do you like to do to relieve stress?-

Scans by @ggpm2012
Translated by john @ www.onehallyu.com

Q: When during the day are you the happiest?
Yuri: When after a long, chaotic day, I lay on my bed and listen to music I like. I also like the few minutes when I wake up not because of an alarm but because of the natural sunlight, and I drink coffee.Q: What have you heard recently that made you feel the best?Yuri: There’s someone who’s been at my company for about 14 years. I coincidentally got to hear them talking about me. They said that Yuri has good sensibility and her deep eyes make her look mature. It really made me feel good. Am I bragging too much?Q: When you feel lonely, what do you do?Yuri: These days, I listen to a lot of music by 40. Even if it sometimes makes me cry. It’s not tears of sadness. Something about it cheers me up. I listen to ’’, ‘’, ‘’ a lot. On nights I can’t sleep, I go in search for a lot of Noh Heekyung’s stuff. I really think Noh Heekyung has the power to cure lonely people. There’s some kind of unexplainable thing about him that makes me feel warm.Q: An era in the past that you liked the most?Yuri: If I could experience any era from the past, I want to live in the extravagant 1920s that appear in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels. I feel like that time period would have had a lot of delicate women like Daisy from “The Great Gatsbyâ€.Q: If actress Yuri could also go back and choose a director, genre, and character, what would she pick?Yuri: There are so many. Since you said I can pick whatever I want, I’ll talk about them all. I want to shoot with Choi Donghoon and his movies like “The Theives†and “Tazzaâ€. I also want to shoot an emotional movie like “The Classicâ€. Out of dramas, I’m such a fan of In Jung-ok’s dramas, starting from “Ruler of Your Own Worldâ€, that I’ve seen every single of his dramas. If I could work with director Lee Yoonjung or director Pyo Minsoo, I’d be really happy.Q: If you were given a month of personal time, how would you spend it?Yuri: First, I’d go to Prague and fully enjoy the country. Then I want to head over to Rome and see every little corner. I think a good end to the vacation would be Miami. As soon as I wake up, I’d go surfing, tanning, and drinking. Doing all that while listening to music, it’d be heaven.Q: What’s the most memorable dream you’ve had this year?Yuri: A huge pig ran into my house. It seemed so pitiful so we fed it and took care of it. But that pig became so big that it became the size of our house’s living room. In the dream, I was pacing trying to figure out what to do. Doesn’t this dream mean that something daebak is going to happen? Should I buy a lottery ticket?*Q: How do you want to spend this Christmas?Yuri: I want to feel what it’s like to spend Christmas in New York. But I think it’d be a happy Christmas if I could just drink wine with the people I like.--*In Korean culture, pig dreams represent wealth and well-being.-

[+158,-10] Lee Hyori is a legendary solo female artist.. She can’t sing very well but it’s not always the voice that makes a star. The song has to be good and she has to have that star power. In that sense, Lee Hyori is a special celebrity8. [+151,-11] I’m sorry but I’m not expecting it.. Hyori is receiving a lot of hate these days but at her peak, her appearance and stardom was no joke9. Mmmmmm.... Dispatch (the logo is in the top left of article). Does this mean SM is media playing Jessica and Jungsis?
The photos were posted on the food truck company's blog and all the pictures have the company's logo on them. The food truck company also boasted about the articles being generated about this, so I think this was a move by the company to get their name out there, not by SM trying to media play Jungsis.

"Eat~ Se-na'... Jessica, gifts food truck to Krystal
Translator: John @ Onehallyu.com

'So lovely to me, Se-na. Sica-unnie is buying! Let's all eat!'*
1. [+5619, -260] The biggest strength comes from family. It’s good to see that the two of them get along so well together
2. [+4296, -251] It’s good to see the good relationship between them3. [+3645, -459] Can Dispatch not write articles if it wasn’t for SM?? I’m curious about YG artists too so please write more articles about them. How Park Bom is eating diet jellies, how CL smokes water cigarettes, stuff like that4. [+2994, -267] Jessica and Krystal really seem like siblings that have a good relationship with one another. I hope we continue seeing only their good traits from now on5. [+2810, -643] There’s no right or wrong when it comes to Jessica and Soshi now, so please stop hating on just Jessica ㅋㅋ In situations like this, EXO stans and SNSD stans seem like they’re the same. Birds of a feather flock together, so just be friendly with one another ㅋㅋㅋ6. [+290, -24] What are you going to do — hate on someone for being supportive of their family members?7. [+294, -29] Is it really necessary to hate on Jessica for taking care of her sister?8. [+268, -41] Jessica is being nice to Krystal because she’s family. Why is her issue with Soshi even being brought up here? Jessica is moving on fine, so what’s with people still hating on the other 8 Soshi members? There’s a difference between the way you treat family members and non-family members. I think the other 8 are just being hated on because there’s more of them ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ If you’re working on a group project with 9 people, and one of them wants to go off on their own and yet still get the same grade, would you say those other 8 people are selfish and bad? It’s good to see Jessica treating Krystal well but let’s not hate on the other 89. [+215, -41] Don’t worry about Jessica ㅋㅋㅋ She’s having fun with Tyler Kwon. There was an article about the two of them at the airport ㅋㅋ10. [+172, -24] Why are people saying Jessica is just using Krystal?.. When Krystal’s drama started, Jessica had made a promise that she was going to this, so she kept her promise ㅋㅋㅋㅋ* T/N: Se-na is Krystal's character's name in her drama 'My Lovely Girl'. The messaging Jessica wrote and the title of the article makes a play on words using the name Se-na. In Korean, the suffix 'se-yo' is used to change the expression to a more formal one. Jessica replaced the 'yo' with 'na'.

4. [+1982, -292] ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
5. [+944, -90] That innovation that Apple told us would all be coming… it was about the CEO coming out
6. [+820, -107] Imagine if he secretly loved Steve Jobs.. what a perfect story that would be..
7. [+714, -36] If the Samsung CEO or a Korean conglomerate came out like that, I wonder what the reaction would be.. I’m not trying to be sarcastic, I’m genuinely curious.
8. [+705, -162] Steve Jobs is rising from his grave now
9. [+523, -37] The world’s most powerful gay
10. [+523, -72] This will inspire gays all over the world

Another article of same title
1. [+997, -102] Doesn’t matter… just make good products ã… ã…
2. [+684, -106] It wasn’t really a secret
3. [+629, -229] He’s really brave
4. [+534, -137] This is really shocking news, isn’t it? His courage is amazing.
5. [+357, -109] I knew that he was gay, but this reminded me again
6. [+134, -31] There are gay people all around you. They’re just not admitting it
7. [+132, -31] Oh..my… I guess Hong Seokcheon is going to be switching to the iPhone 6 now..
8. [+86, -4] Hugo Barra: “This is going to be hard to copy.†**
9. [+107, -38] Still, even if he’s gay, Tim Cook is better than all the other extras who always show up on the Naver homepage….ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
10. [+96, -43] He’s a person like everyone else, just with different sexual preferences
*T/N: Hong Seokcheon is probably the most famous gay celebrity in Korea.
**T/N: Hugo Barra is the VP of Xiamo, an Apple competitor in China, that received criticism for copying Apple’s products.-

Boo!
Welcome to Halloween at OneHallyu! This Halloween, we've prepared another spooky theme for you to enjoy!

Are any of you dressing up as Ohla or Ohbi?!

On another less scary note, you might have noticed a couple changes around here. For one, we moved the latest entries from our blog from the sidebar to above the categories in a less invasive ticker. We also updated our Awards page so that it doesn't take 985 hours for the page to load! Now, it just lists the categories of awards, and when you hover over a category, it shows the awards for that given category. Let us know if you have any questions!
A special thanks to the design team (particularly Lynt and JimmyTutron) for helping us make this beautiful theme and technical admin team and the other staff members for helping us build it so quickly!
Have a happy Halloween! What was the anniversary year in which Domo first appeared for an NHK broadcast?

that's Spain

It’s because we don’t have a set time for when work ends, so when we’re done with our jobs, everyone wants to relieve their stress by drinking or eating out… Germany and other countries in Northern Europe have a set time of 5PM for when they get to go home, so all the stores close early… Honestly, Koreans are the most pitiful but we don’t even know it
The part about Germany is really true. More countries should focus on fomenting work quality over work quantity. Most of the times when people work 9/10/11/12 hours a day, after the first 6/7, the quality of the work seriously plummets. If they let people go home at proper hours, be with their families and have time for hobbies, people would be happier.
Do you live in Germany? Is it true that they have an hour long break where all businesses close in the middle of the day or something?

Life satisfaction in Korea is lower than China and Vietnam’s
Translated by: john @ onehallyu.com

Pew Research Center recently conducted a survey where they asked different countries to rate their lives on a scale of 0 to 10. 47% of South Koreans rated their lives at a 7 or above. South Korea ranked 8th amongst the ‘advanced or developed countries’, with Israel being the most satisfied country (75%) followed by the U.S. (65%), Germany (60%), and the U.K (58%). Meanwhile, economically emerging and currently still developing countries such as Vietnam (64%) and China (59%) ranked higher in terms of life satisfaction than Korea.
(Translator's Note: You can read the full research in English here.)
1. [+1277, -63] Although our economy has developed rapidly fast, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting worse, our welfare programs are weak, we have a lot of decomposition, our education system is headed in the wrong direction, and our quality of life is falling. The kids and the constantly working parents don’t even dinner together anymore
2. [+1017, -69] This research already failed the moment it labeled Korea as a ‘developed’ country.
3. [+956, -31] Do you know why the nightlife in our country is so developed? It’s because we don’t have a set time for when work ends, so when we’re done with our jobs, everyone wants to relieve their stress by drinking or eating out… Germany and other countries in Northern Europe have a set time of 5PM for when they get to go home, so all the stores close early… Honestly, Koreans are the most pitiful but we don’t even know it
4. [+554, -28] So 47% of us said we are either completely satisfied with life, pretty much satisfied, generally satisfied, or kind of satisfied?
5. [+468, -143] This is because in countries that aren’t developed, people think, “This is just the way of life.†But in our country, we think, “No, we can live a much better life†but to make that a reality, it’s too hard
6. [+150, -9] Korea needs to get rid of their Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Most of the nation is still developing, but there are corrupt politicians who get paid by larger companies
7. [+123, -6] We’re a developed country that only sells TV and cellphones
8. [+121, -5] Most of the country are creditors. How could they possibly be happy?
9. [+116, -13] Our country’s GPD PP is well over $20k, and yet we are in the top 3 for highest suicide rate. It’s a serious problem.
10. [+96, -4] Our country is one where the ones who have a lot of money consider the country a buffet and take whatever they want, so how could the remaining 90% of people who are poor be happy?-
