  1. Jonghyun is very vocal and supportive, which is fantastic. Heechul has also spoken about love being more important than whom you're in love with. But that's just two of many--and they're two notably well-spoken individuals. Not everyone can express themselves as well as they can. It's fair to be disappointed when someone doesn't say something you agree with, but if they don't understand why what they're saying is potentially problematic, or know how to phrase it differently, then it doesn't hurt to take things with a grain of salt. As the influence of people like Jonghyun continues to spread, hopefully it will help change the dialogue more. Like I said, I'm not excusing their words. I simply think we need to keep the cultural climate in mind. In regards to Siwon, he seems to have mellowed out, so to speak. He's traveled a lot more, seen more of the world and different cultures, and worked with a lot of different types of people. His horizons broadened, figuratively and literally. That's reflected in some of the choices he's made as far as performing with the group goes, especially with this most recent Super Show. His parents rarely attend SJ performances, but they were at the 100th show on Sunday, as was his pastor. They watched him cross-dress and run around in stage doing horse cosplay, which includes a bit where a male dancer twists his nipples. That would never have happened a few years ago. He's having fun now, rather than caring what people think about him so much. But really, the vid speaks for itself.
  2. While the wording of the "I'm a man" statements and such aren't ideal, you can't instantly jump to homophobia. South Korea is a conservative country and while most people under the age of 30 are supportive of LGBT rights, they simply aren't the majority. As the LGBT community in South Korea continues to grow and gain more support, public discourse will change and the way certain questions are phrased or answered will also change. As recently as 2007, a Pew Research Center Attitudes Survey found that just 18 percent of South Koreans felt that homosexuality should be tolerated. But there is some good news: during a similar survey last June, the figures shot up, with 39 percent of respondents now having no objections to homosexuality. That’s not a high figure, to be sure, but it’s more than double the last one and could suggest that change is happening quickly now that it’s finally arrived. http://time.com/6575/south-koreas-lgbt-community-is-fighting-for-equal-rights/ In contrast, when comedian Hong Suk-chun became the first South Korean celebrity to declare his homosexuality in 2000, he was fired from all his professional engagements. A few other celebrities who followed suit committed suicide after losing their careers and suffering verbal abuse. Mr. Hong now appears regularly on national television. http://blogs.wsj.com/korearealtime/2013/06/12/poll-shows-koreans-warming-to-homosexuality/ Furthermore, the military considers homosexuality to be a personality disorder, and there have been cases where soldiers have been discharged for simply being gay. There are very few openly gay celebrities in South Korea to begin with, and male celebrities face terrible public scrutiny when it comes to enlistments. Could you imagine being an openly gay male idol who then has to enlist into a notably screwed up military, the kind of abuse they might receive? Can you imagine what kind of pressure that puts on these guys? I'm not excusing their comments, or saying "oppa didn't mean it," but the fact of the matter is that these idols aren't receiving media training on how to answer questions about sexuality, especially not with answers that reflect the rest of the world. Their perspective on a lot of different issues is so very different from ours. Hopefully it will get better in time. And about SJ--they've been in this game since 2005. We're talking 18% approval rating, instant career death. So even if that Siwon article was legit, it's from 2007. Views have changed. His views also seem to have changed. If there was a current article, reflecting his current views, that would be one thing. But there isn't. And that Sungmin interview has been proven to be fake soooooo many times. Henry's comment, by the way, is about the differences between life in Korea and Canada. It took him awhile to get used to skinship because guys aren't as physically affectionate with their friends in North America. He's not passing judgement on sexual orientation in any way.
  3. I actually missed a few things, now that I think about it--actor, PC bar owner, and songwriter. Ha. I'm going to add them, because I can~
  4. His solo performance, if you would like to watch a rapper, lead dancer, choreographer, MC, variety master, concert director, video director, dance troupe leader, actor, business owner, songwriter, and highly successful radio DJ, sing a gorgeous ballad. If not, that's fine. Hating on Shindong won't make him any less talented, nor will it erase the fact that he apologized years ago for whatever grudge you're probably holding against him. And I sincerely hope that when it's time for your favorites to enlist, they're spared the hate that Super Junior gets. Despite having three members already having finished serving honorably, and a fourth currently serving where he was placed, they still get shit on. Even if Shindong had been assigned to public service, it's still service. Should your favorite happen to get his leg shattered in a car accident or royally screw up their back during variety filming and be assigned to public service, I hope netizens are far more understanding than they are to SJ.
  5. Ignore the horrid blonde hair and center-part. Surrender to the eyebrow waggle.
  6. And now I am legit crying. However, Ryeowook spoke up and interjected, “The members think differently. Donghae says that if Shindong is not there then he won’t do the concerts. He is a person that gives lots of help and suffers alone in places unseen. But as you don’t see that on TV, I am both sorry and thankful to the members.†Eunhyuk adds, “The members tell him this: without Shindong there are more things that we cannot do. We are worried whenever there is an absence of your presence. What should we do if you’re gone?†Leader Leeteuk also thanked Shindong for his hard work, as he also helps with the group’s choreography with each album release. With word out of Shindong’s unneeded apology to ELFs spread, fans took to Twitter and trended “#ì‹ ë™í¬ì‚¬ëž‘í•´" (We love you Shindong) and showed their unbreaking love for their idol Shindong. http://blog.koreaboo.com/post/97817743603/super-juniors-shindong-sheds-tears-on-mbc-star
  7. I will never be able to adequately express how much rage this fills me with. He's the reason I even paid attention to Super Junior in the first place. I'm not kidding. A-cha was the first SJ video I ever saw, and the fact that there was a handsome guy with a larger build in a boy band floored me, plus I liked his voice. I wanted to know more. His was the name I wanted to learn. Shindong's. No one else's. It was quite odd to learn that the badass from A-cha was actually the group's self-deprecating happy pill. I hope he knows that he's loved. That there are people like me who have this bittersweet heaviness in the back of their minds, and have since the beginning of the year, wondering how many days are left until his smile goes away for two years. I am already preparing myself for him to pull a Yesung and announce his enlistment date during the concert this weekend--which is why I hope SS6 is absolutely amazing. I want him to be able to leave knowing that his production, his baby, is in good hands with the other members and out slaying on a global scale. And thank you, Donghae. Please keep refusing to perform in Super Shows for the greater good.
  8. I'm pretty sure all of their parents are aware of shipping on some level. It's not like they haven't seen plenty of fan banners, lighsticks, or signs by now. Plus, it's not like shipping started with SJ. However, the families with businesses see it/deal with it a lot more, simply because it's "easy" access. I wouldn't worry about Min's mom or Kyu's dad, though. Especially KyuDad. He's been seen with a Min banner at Super Show before, and he went to see Sungmin in Summer Snow in Taiwan at least two of the three nights it was being performed. There's also a framed picture of Sungmin in MOM House. Kyu and Min are really close, even if they don't take the fan-service route. You don't share a room with someone for six years if you don't get along well. They seem pretty comfortable being the Wine Couple and leaving it at that.
  9. Warning--scrolldown fug ahead. ...at least his makeup looks fabulous?
  10. OMG. Look at these girls looking at Teuk. The steady gaze from the one in the back is killing me.
  11. [140917] 周觅MI Zhoumi Weibo Update with Yesung & Jongjin Having coffee with Yesung hyung, Jongjin, they still gift me a nice glasses. siwon1987: do you want to try? so good.
  12. Found on Tumblr. You're welcome. Stop drooling.
  13. Oh noes! Sorry for bringing it up. Spoon >> Pen >> Sword, tbh.
  14. Oh, it does. Have fun going down that Google rabbit hole. Honestly, I think they're just close friends and he's the ChangToria third wheel (as mentioned above). But when has that ever stopped a ship~?
  15. You guys are hysterical. But you know you're in it for the long haul when you actively start playing matchmaker with your bias group. We're going to start sounding like their mothers pretty soon. "I don't know why Teukie is still single. He's such a nice boy, and so handsome. Plus those impeccable manners! If only he'd stop playing with those dorks all the time... Why can't he put all that virtual marriage experience to good use and make us some babies? Is that too much to ask? Return of Superman Season 5 won't cast itself!" I agree on TeukSora and DaraHae. Maybe KyuToria and HenBer? Also SunSun, but I think that ship sank awhile ago.
  16. Agreed. And they couldn't take their eyes off the ELF in the studio. Teuk especially looked like he was just drinking it all in (or perhaps a little bit in shock, haha).
  17. I think he just needs the right platform. He's got SO much going for him, plus that killer smile. It's been so lovely seeing more of his lyrics/compositions being used this year, not to mention that he's finally hosting/DJing on a regular basis.
