I thought there was a discussion (somewhere) that Hyorin debuted as a really strong singer but was on a decline due to improper vocal technique. I'm pretty sure that it's been mentioned on this thread that Hyorin used to belt notes that weren't in her supported range at the time, though I may be over analyzing.

Since the video was brought up. I was wondering if I could get a few questions answered... Did Namjoo hit an F#6, and what register was she vocalizing that in? Chorong was obviously screaming, but I'm curious about Namjoo and Eunji (the notes don't sound like whistles) Also, what in the world is Eunji doing at about 3:50?
-
I'm assuming you read Ahmin's comment, haha. If I remember correctly, theoretically those notes are in her range but they aren't usable. Just like Jessica's G#7 screams.

Thank you! So Minah's larynx was stable and she wasn't straining the Eb5 (Even though it wasn't live, that's still good) It's not resonant though, right? Apparently my ears aren't as good as I thought they were. It took me a few listens before I could hear the pitchiness ><
-
It's possible to tell whether someone's larynx isn't stable with just audio right? I know when the larynx is lowered, there is artificial coloring, but what about when the larynx is just moving slightly on not shooting all over the place too drastically.
-
She was feeling the music, lol. All I remember from the performance is that Celine was the only one to kind of challenge Aretha near the end. She also didn't join in on the belting near the end. I was under the impression that she would've felt the need to show them up.

I kind of feel bad for bringing something back up that was 40 pages ago, but I'm still really curious about how Chen did in his OST (I don't remember seeing it being analyzed) please don't hurt me ><

I know that watching videos and reading about technique can only get you so far with improvement, but it's all I've got at this point in time. There are plenty of sources that all say different things about proper vocal technique and I'm just a bit confused on who to trust. Singwise seems to be very reliable, but sometimes a video example helps in other ways. Are there any other YT coaches that are reliable? I have a few written down like SLS, AA, and Kerri Ho, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Hopefully she's consistent with that note when performing though. Would you guys say that a resonant Eb5 was within Sunny's ability beforehand or has she actually shown improvement (like Baekhyun) after the musical? Notes that high are usually given to Taeyeon or Tiffany in SNSD songs so maybe she'll get more lines when they make a comeback. I hadn't noticed that my jaw was tensing up until recently so I'm not sure if I've always had this problem or if I just recently developed the bad habit. It's supposed to be easier during belting? I'm getting most of the tension when I start singing in my heady mix though :/ It's only been a few days so I guess I'll start working on curving my tongue then.
-
I've noticed recently that when I try ascending scales, or when I'm just sustaining higher notes in songs, I can feel my jaw tense up. I talked to my friend who's classically trained and she told me to lower my tongue so that the tip would touch the back of my teeth, and to kind of make an "o" with my mouth. Her tips help when I'm just singing scales but not when I'm actually singing words. What do you guys recommend?

I love Song Sohee. Hadn't heard of her till the LA Korea Festival a few months back, but I thought she sounded great, during rehearsal and the actual concert. I remember someone saying a while back that the throat usage for pansori is damaging for your voice, and it'd be a shame if it affects her in the long run. Her D5's sounded amazing.

I remember searching through the forum and reading that Spica wasn't that amazing vocally, but I was fairly impressed by this performance they had in April (when I didn't have an account to ask about it) *and sorry if it has been posted before, I try searching thoroughly before asking, but sometimes keywords I think would be used aren't... I think even their non-vocalists (Juhyun and Jiwon) did decent, but I'd like a more educated analysis over my own thoughts. I can't get over how they translated the title of the song back into English though

I think Seohyun has a C#5 at around 0:32, I didn't hear much from Tiffany at all actually (or at least nothing that stood out) Any noticeable improvements from Seohyun? You guys have been saying that she's been pretty lazy with her vocals, is she stepping up for TTS promotions?
-
Oh thank god... We'll get confirmation on that once I work up the courage to record myself. And I think can keep my larynx stable from B2 to F#5, but only when I'm singing scales. If I try to sing lines of songs, it starts moving all over the place. I also can't properly switch registers without a noticeable break, so using head voice if I'm not just sustaining high notes is pretty much not within my skill set. And like Ahmin mentioned, my falsetto when singing sounds extremely closed and doesn't project ><

Really? I've been searching through the forums to make sure I didn't ask about a video that has been already posted and I couldn't find anything. And no worries about the downvoting, I still don't know what it does anyways. I tried learning it, and sadly, I think I do the run better with the original notes than I do an octave down >< And scratch what I said about my larynx not moving as much on lower notes, I sang for the first time in a few days and noticed that my larynx moves perpetually... Even in the lower 4th octave it's shooting up (so sad).
-
Yay! I don't understand why the video has so many dislikes though... I've been searching through the forum and I don't think Tori Kelly has been mentioned before. When the Natalie Weiss PSA video was posted a few pages back, I started going through her riffing videos and was reminded how fast Tori's run in her PYT cover is. I was wondering how fast her agility is, and whether or not her runs (especially the one at 2:22) are precise. Also, how are her high notes? the ones preceding her big run just sound loud to me.
-
2:06 was opened, I know that much. And if you're referring to note she does at the end, yes. It was very flat and unsupported, but I'm still glad she got a second line. I just can't expect much from their live performances. I feel as though I have the agility for it, but it sounds so heady and nothing like the actual song. I've been watching a ton of falsetto vs. head voice videos for guys, and I'm honestly so confused because I feel as though I'm not skilled enough to be singing in head voice, yet none of my notes above A4 sound like falsetto. I'm actually pretty comfortable in the 2nd octave/3rd octave, I just don't like singing there. My larynx doesn't move that much when I sing that low. Whereas my larynx starts to shoot up as I try to sing higher (is it allowed to move slightly? because it's so difficult...) Oh really? Good for Hyorin. Now onto mastering those F#5's.

I suck at mixing, I crack so often. I want to be able to sing EXO's Black Pearl, especially when D.O. does his run, but I can't get anything above G#4 to sound as weighty as I would like it. On the bright side, I think I can mix (with tons of head dominance) to C5. I forgot about all the baritones of the world, since there are so many tenors in kpop. ALSO, Sistar made their comeback on Music Core today and I was wondering how they did. I'm terrible at anything that isn't pitch. (I know Dasom is a weak vocalist, but I'm so glad she got more than 1 line)
-
Baby steps. I'll work up the courage to record myself someday. Just means that I have the same voice type as almost every other male kpop idol >< I do enjoy reaching the 5th octave though (not that I do it well)
-
How boring, haha. I'm supposed to sing in mixed voice within that range, right? Also, when I try to mix above G#4, the notes have more weight (I think that's the correct term) but they're still really heady, is that a bad thing?
-
At least I finally made an account to get my questions answered Took me a while. Oh, and I think my voice gets lighter around D4 and G#4. (I feel as though that range is pretty small though)
-
Maybe... I'd like to improve, but I get so nervous recording myself. I couldn't even speak clearly on my speaking portion during AP exams. I skipped straight to 3:20 and was confused because the lyrics were unfamiliar but the melody wasn't. Regardless, that was amazing. (I've favorited so many videos shared on this thread.) I'm supposed to experience lightening in 2 places in my vocal range right?
-
Awesome, thank you for the further clarification. I've been trying to classify my voice type but since I'm not really comfortable singing in front of others yet, I've been trying to find people with ranges/tessitura similar to mine to find out. I've also been trying to find my passaggio but I'm not really sure what to be looking for.
-
I realize that he went into the 4th octave, but he sang most of the song within the 3rd octave. Is classification more about where someone changes registers then? Also, thank you for the reply.

Hey everyone, I've been lurking on this thread for a while now, but I've only just recently created an account. I'm looking forward to participating in the conversations and getting some of my own questions answered. First up, I noticed that Eric didn't really sing outside of the third octave (I'm assuming that's where he is most comfortable). If that's the case how would you classify his voice type?
