  1. I decided that Dreamcatcher is the love child of Babymetal and Gfriend.

I don't know if you guys read Asian Junkie but AJ calls Dreamcatcher "Satanic Gfriend" which I find pretty funny.

I'd argue that Dreamcatcher takes inspiration from Babymetal's pop-metal fusion, but has their own distinct concept and sound.

Dreamcatcher's sound is more strictly a metal song that follows the Kpop song formula. And Dreamcatcher's concept is strictly horror, Babymetal's concept isn't really horror. It shows the difference between taking inspiration from a group and stealing their concept.

  2. Once again folks...

Shout out to all Dai5ies who were able to mobilise their smartphones or stream the MV to continue making this possible for our girls to get their 2nd win!! :D

Yes! I'm glad they didn't just win on The Show, it shows that they are still going strong... that, and some people don't consider The Show wins as legitimate.

  3. Some rant

There's a thread asking/talking kpop vs jpop, and this post is inspired by it

I guess kpop is entering mature stage

Kpop, first and foremost, is aimed at local audience. Business and culture wise tho, it expands the market overseas and aim to be renowned globally

For me, around 2009-2013 era is the golden age for kpop. Well, it's subjective I know, but I think the releases in those era (generally) are better than this era which is basically "same sound different feel" here and there

*This is about ggs since idk bgs theme*

Yes there were less groups overall compared to now. The "problem" here is not just number of groups, but the music scene itself. Popular genre/concept stray not too far from either innocent/cute, or sexy. And that's that. How the hell are groups suppose to be "different" or "unique" if the "acceptable" concepts are basically just cute vs sexy ?

Look at what happened with rainbow's black swan, it's unique, mystifying, and IT FLOPPED. The following year they came back with generic sound "woo hoo" which unfortunately was the last of them bc their contracts ended.

How the hell kpop is supposed to be a global music culture if the musics are basically the same overused concept almost everywhere, and dont even bother doing different concept/theme, cause it wont last/publics dont like it.

Well, I guess this is the (sad) reality of the so called kpop scene.

Sure there are groups --- like gfriend, girls day, exid, to name a few --- that managed to hit it big but most groups out there will basically wander aimlessly in the desert. And while "big companies' groups' are not always guaranteed 'wow much wow" success, they have financial and marketing power + mediaplay to pull it off to certain degree.

To be frank, I don't think lack of musical diversity is going to be the death of Kpop and Jpop. From a financial perspective, it's wise to follow a trend rather than try to stray away from them because the concepts are tried-and-true. Companies know those concepts appeal to people, so they keep using it until the people grow tired of it. This doesn't mean groups can't use a new or uncommon concept and become successful, that's called appealing to a niche. 2NE1 and Babymetal are great examples of groups that appeal to niches and are successful because of it.

I'm not sure about other countries, but remember that the American and Japanese music industries are two of the best-selling music industries, with Korea recently cracking the top 10. Three things appeal to Americans: Vocal powerhouse concepts (Think Mamamoo and SPICA's appeal) and hip-hop/hip-hop-inspired sexy concepts. Two things appeal to the Japanese: Cute concepts, and sexy concepts. All countries have the concepts that work for them and music companies that know and capitalize on these trends. I'd simply argue that American concepts aren't so clear cut because we don't exactly have groups, and artists really only perform on concerts and music award shows, so artists don't get much opportunity to strongly define concepts or really have them.
