  1. Resonance is important, yes, but you don't have to be resonant every single not. Even the best of singers don't resonate every note, even if it's purely for stylistic reasons. Yes. often when singers aren't resonant, it's because they don't have the support for the note, but that's not always the case. Tiffany is a little resonant at 0:20, but I feel like it could be more resonant, and SeoHyun doesn't sound resonant to me. But both of these could just be stylistic choices (I don't know these vocalists very well). Hope it helps.
  2. Yes, Tiffany was resonant, could have been more resonant, but she was resonant. And, from what I heard, SeoHyun wasn't that resonant, but it seemed more like style to me. Honestly, I'm not familiar with these vocalists and don't know what they are capable of supporting, but it seemed that way to me.
  3. Seriously the most versatile Korean vocalist.
  4. Yeah, it's sad, but she really should have chosen another song. She got shown up. His performance was insane! For a male pop vocalist, his ability is fascinating. In any case, I liked most all of the performances, except for a few here and there.
  5. I like some of her covers outside of ì´ì„ í¬'s works, but every time she sings one of ì´ì„ í¬'s songs, I cringe. Not a top tier vocalist, but good.
  6. Really? I think Bada was the worst. Her performance was gosh-awful, in my opinion. XD Yeah, exactly!
  7. I also love this song! Have you checked out any of her other music? If not, there's plenty of it on YouTube, and even some with eng subs (most of them translated and subbed by me ).
  8. Yeah, I'm not sure I liked her cover of this song, actually. When Sunhee sings it, it sounds so beautiful, and the technique is superb. But something just seems off with Lena's cover. Maybe some of it has to do with the fact that I just love Sunhee so much.
  9. She was obviously behind the melody and was therefore vocally unable to smoothly transition back into the melody and execute the belt/head voice transition without making it awkward or without pausing (even if her next transition were smooth). The thing is, I was already done with the Sohyang topic until it was revived, and I really don't have time to search through her performances and post them (at least not until the weekend), so if people are so interested that they brought up a dead topic, they can look for themselves. If you aren't that interested, that's fine, too (and I mean all this in general, just specifically directed at you, so I'm not trying to criticize you or anything :P).
  10. Just because I show it, it doesn't mean it's not there. Seriously, people can find it for themselves. And I don't think your explanation works for that performance. Sorry. That's really only just your guess. And I already said my definition of inconsistency.
  11. Sure! I respect your opinion, even if I disagree with it. And I'm not saying that her messing up a belt during Hero makes her a bad vocalist, just a slightly inconsistent one, so I'm not implicating that. It's just a little hard to not notice the consistency in which either she gets gruff/overreaches herself/goes off-tune/cracks (for those who might attack me for saying this, I'm not saying that she does it all the time; by 'consistency' I just mean 'moreso than someone I would consider to be a virtuoso singer'). And of course I don't expect her to do the same thing everytime; part of artristy is being able to vary, so I have no qualms with her in that regard. I'll post some videos later of her random gruffness (it's in many later performances) and going off-tune, but it's actually past midnight here now, so if you've got something to do, I will just do it later. xD
  12. I don't think the fact that she has improved a little defeats my argument because it's in most of her recent performances where she gets randomly gruff, goes off-tune, and either cracks and/or starts shaking her head like crazy to (possibly) help achieve some sort of vibrato on the extreme upper belts. Again, I believe this to be the case because she doesn't do it on the lower belts. Honestly, I think she improved in that her voice matured and she became more comfortable, but I think she's already deteriorating from what she was just two years ago. But then again, it could just be me. Only time will tell. :P Maybe it was an adlib, but this is a song she'd already sung many times, so I don't see why she would need to adlib. Furthermore, if she did, I think it suggests that she was a little behind the melody and unprepared for the note. Yeah, it was connected coming down, but the transition into head voice was awkward and shaky at best. Again, I'd like to stress that I'm not saying any of this to prove Sohyang is a bad singer, so I hope no one takes my intrepretation that way. Edit: To me, this really doesn't seem like an adlib. She lost the melody at the start of the climax, tried to jump into it, but messed up. That's the only way I'm hearing this, and it sure did seem to me that she knew where she wanted to go with that note, and it just didn't happen.
  13. Oh, I can post those two now. Here, around 2:28, she leaps into head voice, and it sounds to me as if she did it because she missed her last belt (it's also not very well connected). This is also a really good clip of her shaking face, and I'm pretty sure she goes off-tune a number of times in this perfromance. 4:44 onwards, and this performance is on a downward spiral. No vibrato until the very last second and a strained sounding belt. Compare this to her later performances when she shakes her head and produces vibrato. I'm not saying there is definitely a connection between her shaking head and her vibrato on upper belts, but I think it's worth consideration.
  14. Facial expression, no. If they're straining, they probably look like they're straining, but you can make any face you want even if you are singing well. It could just be passion. It's too arbitrary to be conclusive.
  15. Maybe later I'll go through and post some videos with the times on them for reference, but not now. If anyone's interested enough he/she can go out and find them. They're there. Just waitin'. Hmm, okay. :P ^^
  16. Yeah, my point is just that someone could be fooled into thinking it's good. xD
  17. Yeah, you can sound good and have poor technique. That's the point.
  18. If everyone had posted like you, I don't think the "argument" would have happened. I just mean that Regine (to ME) sounded pretty good in her prime, even if she sounds terrible now. She never really had that great of a head voice, but to me, her belts sounded pretty decent when she was younger. Which is why I said that it's possible to imitate proper technique for a short period of time, but in the long run, it's not sustainable. About Sohyang's vocal flaws, I think she uses her shaking head to help her produce vibrato (at least sometimes), but only in the upper register. There is a performance of "Upon This Rock" from 2006 in which she does not shake her head, and the note comes out as sounding stained and lacking vibrato. Also, there is a performance of "Hero" from "Miracle Korea" (I think?) where, during the climax of the song, Sohyang goes for the belt, misses, and then breaks into head voice in order to compensate for her failure, which could be a sign that she did not close her vocal cords properly and had too much air flowing. Also, there are many performances of Sohyang where unintentional gruffness randomly appears. Yes, gruffness can be good if done intentionally, but in these performances, it almost sounds hoarse. And in this, I'm not quite sure about, so many you can give me your opinion, but it seems to me like Sohyang lacks the resonance when she peaks in her belts, and only has it when she comes back down. For example, her C6 belts don't seem very well sustained to me, and the real power and vibrato come as she lowers the note. I'm not dishing on the note because it's still very and extremely impressive. It was just a thought I had while watching a few of her performances. And I believe Sohyang at times has pitch issues that throw her off-tune and behind the melody, usually in English, so maybe it's an accent problem? In any case, I still think Sohyang is a really good vocalist, I just think no one ever discusses her flaws, and even when they are exposed, they are sugar-coated. I actually don't know much about Whitney's technique other than her gospel jaw and the fact that she did strain, indicated by the large bulge on her neck when she belted sometimes. Yes, Whitney did improve her technique as her career went along, and yes, drugs did play a very large part in the deterioration of her voice, but honestly, I don't think we can overlook the damage her lack of technique had. That being said, she still had one of the best voices of anyone I've ever heard. And you should check out Huang Qishan when you're free! She's amazing!
  19. Really? I don't know much about her coaching. I just love her music and amazing voice. xD Okay. No offense taken. I've only recently gotten into Barbra, mainly because I believe she was a massive influence on Lee Sun Hee, who also has amazing vibrato and resonance and sometimes sings some of Barbra's songs (though most of them are never uploaded ). So I still have a lot of her music to explore!
  20. Because in my carelessness, I correlated the video going-in-and-out as "shaky" and said she shook it (though I didn't mean it by a shaky voice). Actually, I never said her voice was shaky. I just said she shook the recordings. Like I said, it was my bad, so sorry for the confusion! I love Babs. Basically that there were singers with more resonance than Sohyang. You aren't getting anywhere, either.
  21. I know Lee Sun Hee's voice isn't shaking. She has amazing vibrato. I only brought in a third party example to illustrate my point, but I see it didn't help any. Edit: I now see what you meant by the shaking part. I didn't mean that her voice shook. I just meant that the professional recordings went out due to the power in her voice. I didn't mean that in correlation to her vibrato. Sorry for the confusion! Of course it's the most natural way of resonating, but some singers have more resonance than others, regardless. Just like Babs has more resonance than Sohyang, though both have technically perfect middle register resonance.
  22. Actually, my girl Lee Sun Hee DID blow out a speaker system once with her resonant voice, and her voice even shakes professional recordings. So I'd say she has more natural resonance than Sohyang (even if Sohyang resonantes technically as she should). No, I never misread what you wrote. If you go back and read the conversation, you are the one who actually misunderstood. And in your lack of English comprehension, you made a jab at my English, so I jabbed back at you. In any case, though I'm guilty of it, too, comments unrelated to music have no place here, so I think it should just be dropped entirely.
  23. I read your entire post, but there were no implications made that she is known to the musical community as a "cracker." Because I saw someone else already was. And I've already stated my opinions multiple times. They haven't changed.
