For anyone interested, the ê³ in ê³ ìŒ comes from the Chinese character (한ìž) 高, which means "high," and the ì € in ì €ìŒ comes from the Chinese character 低, which means "low." So, instead of thinking of it as an octave, think of it as "high sound/low sound." It might help if you ever get mixed up. ^^ EDIT: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=735879779791879&set=vb.725716157474908&type=2&theater Can someone please review this if s/he has time? Big thanks!

Well, I'd actually have to listen to Hyorin first before I decided how good she is. Without knowing for myself, I'm not going to talk about it.
-
I don't listen to Hyorin much, so I don't know her well. Sorry. lol Well, her genre would be sorta difficult to classify because the Kpop that existed in the 80s and 90s is far different than the Kpop now, and during that time, even the younger generation listened to trot music. So, Lee Sun Hee ended up recording traditional/trot albums and even performing traditional/trot concerts (or just random trot/folk music at events), but the majority of her work is just an older version of Kpop/Kballads. Actually, some of her songs even feature intense dance routines (a precursor to the modern idol groups). But I could see how it would be hard to classify her as a "Kpop" vocalist because she's experimented with so many genres in the past thirty years.
-
Yeah, like someone said above, pop singers can also resonate low notes. In Kpop, Lee Sun Hee resonates low notes frequently (some of her older songs and/or trot/traditional pieces (sorry to spam her, but I don't really know many Kpop vocalists with developed lower registers). Outside of Kpop, though, Aretha was pretty solid in the lower areas, and Beyonce's lower register is also pretty good.

Can anyone tell me what the notes at 0:37 and 1:43 are? I'm not really the best tuner. By the way, how was the performance overall? It's my first time hearing it. I know I'm not that popular here, but I'm really interested to see what others think. Thanks in advance! http://blog.daum.net/_blog/BlogTypeView.do?blogid=04SbI&articleno=11270748&categoryId=313964®dt=20070218112956 Edit: Sorry about the external link; the video's only shared privately on daum.

I thought you were talking about both and just emphasizing Ann (hence, especially). Sorry for my misunderstanding. And, I don't know her. I'll have to listen.

Most people here think ë°•íš¨ì‹ is good, too, though. And honestly, people in this thread still don't know Lee Sun Hee that well, but it's oh, well. I can understand what you mean. Thanks for being cordial about it and not blowing it out of proportion.
-
You're so wrong I don't even know where to begin. I posted LSH videos initially, and someone else brought Sohyang into the discussion, so I replied. Thanks for tryin', though, boo.
-
Hmm, maybe, but I think he was dismissing the entire premise because he specifically mentioned that the forum was for questions and the like.

This is the second time I've seen you post a video with a caption about slayage since you told me that's not what the vocals thread is for. I'm not hating, but I feel a little confused, tbqh.

How would I know?

Many good vocalists dance and still have good breath support. Also, the reviewer said "at that time," which isn't to say that she hasn't gotten better since.
-
Wow. Is that the tune from I Dreamed a Dream? It seems like she's singing a musical.
-
Dang, makes me feel bad for the kids who take íŒì†Œë¦¬ classes; not to mention the performers in ì¡°ì„ who performed for over eight hours.

Here are two other great performances from 차지연. ì—´ì• (Passionate Love) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBG7zULZvOI I'm pretty sure she gets throaty again here, but I really love how she breaks the last note. And my personal favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGp7wOdovw8 I don't know enough about pansori vocal technique to make any judgements, but wouldn't this style of singing eventually damage her voice (at least in contemporary singing terms)?
-
She's also pretty decent at pansori, the traditional Korean performance art. It's amazing how she can sing both so well, seeing as how they're such different art forms. In any case, while I didn't watch these, I've heard throatiness in her other performances before. Maybe it's also a result of yelling during pansori? lol But I think she's a very emotional singer. Glad someone else knows about her.

Hmm, okay. Sorry about the multiple posts.

I'm just wondering why I receive all the hate when I clearly agreed with everything you said and didn't start this topic. Whatever. And you're also bringing up the topic again and again. In any case, I agree the thread is for learning, so I'll stop.
-
I couldn't care less if you get mean. But you're not going to impute someone and tell him to stop and not expect to see a reply, especially when he didn't start the debacle.
-
I have no problem moving on from this topic. And I wasn't trying to prove she isn't that good. I didn't bring up anyone after someone mentioned Sohyang; rather, someone mentioned Sohyang in regards to another singer I brought up and started a comparison. I'm also sick of arguing and comparing singers, but if someone throws insults and comparisons at a singer s/he doesn't even know that well, I'm going to refute those claims. I also participated in a discussion about why I like Sohyang's energetic performances and talked about some of my favorite performances from her, but of course that gets ignored.
-
I completely agree. But this argument started as Sohyang is better than "insert artist here." It works both ways.
-
Only in the upper register, doe lol That's also one of my favorite performances from her.
-
What's your evidence? Seriously, I've watched countless LSH and Sohyang performances, and the only thing more powerful about Sohyang is her upper register. LSH's mid and lower register are both better projected and more resonant. And while LSH does have a very projected upper register, it's obvious Sohyang's is much better developed, explored, and implemented.

Hmm, I just think she's an underrated singer, so I just wanted to get her more recognition. I feel like people in this thread look down on her because I'm the one who supports her, which is tragic because she really is a great singer. I posted the videos not to spam but because of the wonderful belts she produces and because of her expression (because someone before talked about singers needing more than technique). I thought they were really good vocal performances. And I do post them to start discussions; no one talks about them. Sorry if it looks like spamming, though.
