I don't agree with the why but I sort of agree with the statement: that SHINEE won't be able to reach the "top tier" as their fellow label mates such as SNSD, Super Junior and one day EXO. I think the biggest problem with SHINEE is that they're not a team. Everyone is talented in their own way and they're great together... on stage. Off stage they're not really a team. They don't socialize with each other and they all have their individual goals that they put before the group's. If you look closely, they're very competitive with each other and would much rather shine over the next member given the chance.
Take a look at Shinhwa, the reason they're still doing well after so many years (typically an idol's shelf life is about 6-7 years) is they are truly a group. They stick through thick and thin together and understands for a group to achieve fame it calls for a combined effort.
I have an insider at SM, she tells me SHINEE members hardly EVER hang out socially. Basically they're a strictly professional relationship group. SNSD has cliques but the ones that are close are very close; same with SJ and EXO, but not SHINEE. No one in that group is really friends once the cameras are turned off.
