One more thing, you should probably include the fact that Jaejoong does covers on songs that originally performed by female singers. And there was a song that some male singer wrote for his boyfriend. Jaejoong did a cover on that  too

He seems to choose songs that he can really relate to and get into as well. So the fact that he chooses to cover mostly female singers or a gay male singer singing about their love to males is interesting.

I saw my post about Jaejoong from the "which idol is gay" thread was linked here. I'm glad you guys like it!

 

I mainly follow Jae, but you can't follow him without knowing about Yunjae.   He always spoke so dear of his former tvxq members too. Some of his old tweets/interviews 2 years after the split make me really sad to read...

 

Jaejoong: "I don't know if it's okay for me to say this.. I miss Yunho and Changmin as well.. No matter what people say, they are our members and I know them better than anyone.. Although people may say I'm foolish.. I really miss them after all this time."

 

Kim Jaejoong declared, that “one day all of us will be together.â€

 

I don't know if they are in contact now (I really wish they are). Regardless, it's obvious Jae still loves them and will always have them in his hearts. And I get a feeling alot of his ambiguous tweets about "yearning" and "memories of past love" are about one of his former tvxq members too.

So that happened in March 2009. And a few month later in July, JYJ had that lawsuit and split with SM... so I wonder if this was one factor (out of many) that added to why Yunho didn't leave with JYJ and stayed with SM at that time.

Thank you so much for your post on Jae! I really enjoyed it. And like what daft punk said, I like the fact that you did not mention his femininity as one of the main reason to question his sexuality. I always had a hard time dealing with that excuse when people tried to 'defend'him when the topic of his sexuality came up.  Btw,I hope you dont mind me linking your posts to the yunjae thread. ^^ Again, good job on the analysis!

And I also get annoyed when people use the "femininity =/= gay" excuse to "defend" their oppas from being gay. ....like, it probably doesn't mean anything that someone's feminine, but I don't understand some people's logic in concluding someone is definately not gay just because "femininity =/= gay".

And they described exactly how I've always felt about him and his sexuality , a lot of people misunderstand me when I tell them I think jaejoong's gay they say that I only say it because of yunjae or his femininity which is absolutely not true

And there you are giving millions of evidences of why he could be gay without even mentioning his femininity and I like the fact that you compared him with key because I also think they're really similiar in their personalities and they're both open about their sexuality but in a bit different ways

 

I'm not really that good at expressing my thoughts like you lol so idk if this will be well understood but anyway I just want to add that the only big difference i see between jaejoong and key is that key is not that much attached to his family I remember he said once on star king that he grew up only with his grandma until he traveled to Seoul to start working for his dream so it was probably much easier for him to be himself and accept himself at a very young age and he wasn't pressured by the idea of getting married and having kids so he able to be more open minded about his marriage and future

While jaejoong was like the only son in his family so obviously since he was a kid he knew exactly what his parents were excepting of him to do (getting married and having kids to keep their family's name)

That's why he lived his whole live until now knowing that even though he doesn't like women it'll come the day when he must get married and have kids to fulfill his parents' wish But he also knows that he doesn't like women that's why he always postpones His marriage and try to enjoye his life as much as he can now cuz he knows that once he'll get married his life will become really complicated

And if you notice in the interviews you posted of him talking about marriage , he never speaks of it as something exciting or something that would make him happy he only speaks of it as if it's some kind of trouble for him

And when he talked about that girl getting married and finding the person she loves at a very young age I felt like he was very envious of her because he knows that he'll never be able to marry the person he loves because obviously that person is a man

 

 

Yeah, I agree. Jae was adopted into a family of 8 girls...so it's likely his parents sought out a boy to adopt who can pass on their name. So there's probably lots of expectations on him, being their only son.

 

I get really sad thinking about Jae sometimes. :( He doesn't sound happy whenever he talks about marriage. (Except for that one day when the gay director announced his gay wedding, lol. Literally 20 minutes after that news came out Jae tweeted "that's unbelievable" and seemed very excited over something for the rest of that day)

 

But whenever he talks about wanting a g/f...it all sounds so depressing. "I want to give it a try", and wishing a girl to "please come quickly" before he dies. And in the video I posted, where he says he needs a g/f...he immediately asks the guy "Do you regret getting married?" 

 

So Jae repeatedly talks about needing a g/f...and the first thought he associated with it is "regret" in marriage? It's like he's viewing having a g/f as something he's obligated to have in marriage, but doesn't really want. If someone talked about needing a g/f because they wanted to be happily married in love, I don't think they'd have "regret" even on their minds to bring up. Maybe they'll ask "What's it like to be married?"/"Is marriage everything you expected?" not "Do you regret getting married?"

It's weird how no one's really talking about that photo of Jo Kwon outside a gay club. I showed it to a friend of mine who's a huge 2AM fan and she hadn't seen it, plus nothing really shows up on google or naver either.

 

I think fans are just being very protective. I've seen them actively request those photo of him to be deleted whenever it's posted.

10. Conclusion

This is getting really long. Jeajoong is just a complex person. You can't fully understand his sexuality without understanding him as a person. And there's a mystery about him that I can't grasp.

 

It's odd, because like Key, Jaejoong is a person who emphasizes honestly, he finds it difficult to tell a lie, he's very straightforward and direct regarding how he expresses his thoughts and emotions. However, although Jae doesn't hold back his feelings, his words can often be elusive and difficult to comprehend. Maybe it's because he freely expresses his emotions without filter and

...he's just himself. And with being human, comes real complexities and flaws.

 

A man full of regret, loneliness, disappointment, lost love, yearning, insecurities, jealousy, emptiness, melancholy...You can see it in his interviews, and especially filled in his twitter updates:

His honesty and ability to say whatever is on his mind is really refreshing, but I also get a sense that his frankness and impulsiveness can potentially get him into trouble:

 

 

*Just interesting to note that the manger got nervous in the 2 interviews above during questions about dating. If Jae dated only females, I don't think this warrants such a reaction since Jae is in his mid-20s and doesn't exactly have a pure/chaste image. (Plus if it were female celebrities he's dated, I'd think they'd want him to mention it since it would distract from all the gay rumors and speculations. I mean, they even created rumors involving 2 Japanese female celebs before...but then Jae went and discredited those rumors, lol)

 

Interviewer 3:

He was the original airport fashionista and the airport fashion style icon, thus people were curious about Kim Jaejoong’s usual looks. To this, Kim Jaejoong gave a surprising reply, i.e. he thinks that he is not good looking. This made the staffs around screamingly said what nonsense is that.

“I think I am not good looking. I have always been straightforward and the reason why I couldn’t say that I think I am not good looking during that period of time was because it would be impolite to the fans who likes me. But I seems to be able to say this out easily now. (laughs) Maybe it’s because I wished that my fans liked me for my straightforwardness and fans who liked me for my looks will probably be minority.â€

 

With these words, it would probably give a shock to all the fans. But such frankness is definitely his charm, and because of this, he continued to be frank. When continuing this question, he would laugh out loud at times and the unability-to-stop tone of his makes it sound so interesting.

 

Interview 4:

Q: You also used to introduce girls before, didn't you?

JJ: Most of the people I introduce to each other mostly are boys. Even when I'm drinking, it's 9 out of 10 chances that it's among boys. If there were any girls then I might have done that too.

 

Q: What could have been done?

JJ: After I say it like this, then it becomes like that. Ah, so. In the end, everyone just gathers looks at the girl and it happens that the girl becomes the center of everything. I think I'm more of the guy that likes making noise and talking among boys. So whenever I go drinking, I don't usually call girls up. Is it because I don't have interest in girls? In my phonebook, there's female celebrities and excluding the female staff, I only have three female celebrities' number.

 

Q: I'm curious and I'd like to ask why, can I?

JJ: I can also tell you this if you won't write about it.

 

Q. Is it just ordinary? I'm getting suspicious about this.

JJ: Because it's been a million years since I haven't contacted even those three.

 

*I seriously think he told the interviewer that he's gay

 

 

 

 

I guess that's the intrigue of jj to me..that he's not afraid to expose himself and appear human. There are probably aspects of his personalty that some people dislike...but I tend to believe it's because he's willing to share so much of his true self in public. And in being completely genuine and honest, all his flaws are in plain sight (jealousy, insecurities, need for attention/affection, etc). But then on the other hand, everything else he expresses...the closeness/loyalty he speaks of his members, the love/appreciation he displays towards fans, the affection he engages with friends/family...you'd know they are also coming from a genuine place.

 

"Stars are often required to show perfection, but there should be a side that shows that they are human too, that they are imperfect." - JJ

 

It might feel like I'm going off-topic, but the main purpose of this last section is get to know Jae and understand why he appears so open about his sexuality in an environment where most other K-pop Idols are probably hiding it (some even ashamed of it). Like I said with Key, it might be his personality and how they both place strong emphasis on being genuine and honest. And Jae especially, is not afraid to reveal his weakness and flaws. He's not afraid to engage in activities that others may criticize and disapprove of. He's not perfect, but he's also not ashamed to be himself.

 

This takes you to my statement in the beginning: 

"So either he's a really, REALLY open-minded person who's confident/secure on his sexuality as a straight man to fool around, but often wonders if it's gay and likes trolling people about it......or he's simply gay and doesn't know how to hide his true feelings." 

 

I think the latter fits more with his personality than the former. He's someone who goes after what his heart desires. The fact that he often sounds unhappy when talking about marriage (or getting a girlfriend) indicates to me that (if he were to be straight) he wouldn't be very confident/secure in his love with females. But he does seem comfortable and most himself if he were a gay man (from the fact that he continues engaging in activities that will cause people to speculate him being gay...and him being aware of people's speculations too). Also, being close friends with Hong Seok Cheon and also Heechul ([1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]) (who's shown vocal support towards his dongsaengs regarding same-sex relationships), certainly helps him to embrace his sexuality if he were gay. So there are many reasons why, despite his lack of confidence in other aspects of his life, he is still comfortable with his sexuality and doesn't care about appearing gay.

 

Finally, these statements from Jaejoong:

"Strangely, my fans weren’t jealous [of the female co-stars]. Instead, they were jealous of the actors? (Laugh)†-JJ

"It’s like this every time. Compared to female actresses, I always get paired up with male actors." -JJ

 

Coupled with this statement:

"...what good would it do for me to hide things like this. I’m pretty sure most of my fans know all of this by day....It’s not like I can deny things that my fans already know about."-JJ

 

Those statements sure does indicate that he's possibly aware that his fans know his preference, so he feels no need to hide it. <3

 

BONUS

 

 

8. Exceptions for Males

Besides preferring the company of men, there are other things Jae leaves open for males, yet shuts down for females.

 

Jae mentioned that he would never get a tattoo of a girl's name:

Next, he also revealed that he would never tattoo a girl's name, including his wife. He emphasized that he might tattoo his children names in the future, but definitely not woman's name.

 

...But he got a tattoo of his boys name, Micky and Junsu:

 

 

Jae mentioned he never wrote a song for a women:

 

"Rather than betrayal, I have broken up with my girlfriend because I reserved time for my dream more than for her. I first met her when I was in 6th year of elementary school. She is my first love and we dated for 4 years and 8 months. I think I have never written a song for a woman but there are songs containing my feelings after parting. Almost all the songs I made are sad songs. For me, the sorrow of parting lasts long. At times like that, many songs come out." [Asiatoday Interview] 

 

9. Ideal types and marriage

So Jae seems to have a preference for males. However, there are times when he is asked specially about his Ideal "Girl" and also about marriage. When these topics are brought up, he often doesn't mention gender specific things. Also, he's the only male Idol I'm aware of who has actually named a male as his ideal type (twice!) and he didn't look like he was joking either.

 

People he has named as his Ideal Types (or people he's interested in having a relationship with):

When Jae's describing his ideal type, he often describes things that are not gender specific, like pretty hands.  And when talking about love, he rarely mentions physical attributes tied to any gender:

 

 

 

The one instance where he mentions something gender related was saying he wanted a "housewife type", "...a girl who can manage household chores and cook well." (

..you can read some of my opinions on that in Key's analysis. Basically, in a conservative environment like Korea, it is not unexpected for gay males to feel the need to conform to expectations of having a traditional family. They may see these traditional values abstractly rather than personally, and so it's not surprising that they can often describe things stereotypically, like wanting a "housewife")

 

 

Anyways, there aren't many clips of Jae interacting with females to really determine his attraction to them,

(and he seems playful rather than attracted to them. Like siblings...and he did grow up around 8 sisters.). But when Jae talks about getting a girlfriend, he often sounds unexcited:

 

At a fanmeeet in Thailand, he was asked if he wanted a Thai g/f, and he said "but if I had a thai g/f you guys wouldn't like it, right?" Then the MC says, right now you have 5000 g/f (pointing to the audience), and Jae unenthusiastically replied "that will make you get older quickly."

The following quotes are ordered by date, so you can see how he transitions from wanting to get married quick...but as time passes, he pushes it off later and later...to not at all:

 

 

 

Jae generally sounds unsatisfied when talking about marriage in the quotes above. However, when the news about Kim Jho Kwang-Soo's plans to hold Korea's first gay wedding was announced on nate, naver and other Korean sites, Jae tweeted an ambiguous tweet expressing how unbelievable and emotional(sad) something was:

"Kekekekekeke I can't believe this" (ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ì´ëŸ´ìˆ˜ê°€)
"Kekekekekekekekekeke it's a bit sad" (ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ슬프다요)

 

This might be a coincidence, but since the tweet came minutes after the news of the gay director's wedding (and it was highly discussed on twitter and tweeted to him), I speculate he's responding about it. The rest of that day, he seemed unusually excited, even inviting some of his friends over to celebrate with RedBull and drinks.

7. Appreciation of his male fans

This might not indicate anything about him being gay (but it's not just appreciation he shows, he sometimes flirts with them too, lol). Anyways, it's really cute so I had to make a section for this.

- To me, they are gods. Male fans. Ugh~ I want them. I really want them. I want to have fanboys.

Interesting, because Jae has stated that "he didn’t say “I love you†even once to the girl he has dated for a year", but then says it to a fanboy at his concert. There are other instances of him stating something he wouldn't do for females, yet making exceptions for males...

6. Jae doesn't give a shit what people think

From the other points above, Jae has mentioned kissing men, he's also played up chemistry with his co-actor (Yihan) and group member (Yunho), and he strongly prefers male company and regularly hangs out in the gay district of Itaewon. This is all while acknowledging himself that he might not have interest in girls.  Some people may question that if he was really gay, he'd be more careful and not be so obvious. But Jae's always been the type to do what he wants and continue doing it (even if people find it weird or even if they might think it's gay).

 

Remember I mentioned this weird habit of Jae's:

 

It's been brought up again in later interviews, so I'll assume he hasn't stopped this habit...

 

Maybe he thinks it's fine because he allows other guys to take naked photos of him in the bathtub too? lol:

The last segment of the fanmeeting was ‘Paparazzi’. Jaejoong showed us photos he’s never revealed before. ... one was Jaejoong naked in a bathtub! – He said the bathtub photo was taken by a fellow actor while he was filming Dr.Jin. The fifth (and last) one was JJ topless selca in bed with blanket scrunched up around his chest. He said there are even sexier photos, but he can’t reveal them here… JJ: perhaps on twitter later? LOL

 

And the same thing with giving pecks to his members. He did it previously with Changmin and they were calling it weird, now he does it with Junsu/Yuchun despite his awareness that people could think he's gay:

 

5. YunJae

There's a lot that could be written about them, but this isn't a YunJae analysis, it's a Jaejoong analysis. I'll just say that I'm convinced their relationship extended beyond normal fanservive. At the very least, Jae is seriously infatuated with Yunho (and Yunho appeased him, if not anything more). How serious they took it...I don't know. But I'm bringing YunJae up because Jae made it so obvious with his stares that he was attracted to another man (Yunho). This isn't the way friends look at each other:

Now these next images are what I mentioned earlier... Jae feels like he has to compete with others (including females) when they take male attention away from him. Again, I don't think any straight man would appear this jealous and give people death glares while looking the person up and down. And the thing to notice is that other people around are smiling/laughing, it's only Jae with that death glare:

I won't write much on YunJae, but there's a lot of good resources to learn more about this pair:

 

 

 

So there's alot of good resources and analysis of yunjae out there (and there are also others that are contrived and exaggerated to beware of). My analysis here is focused only on Jae's sexuality, and I brought YunJae up because it shows Jae obviously being attracted to another man (Yunho). The exact nature of their relationship and timespan it took place, I don't have the knowledge to determine (and I don't think anyone knows besides Yunho and Jae themselves, but we can all speculate). I do, however, believe that at one point in time, there was something more between them than they showed publicly. But whatever it was, seems to fade as time passes by (although the memories still remain strong).

4. Preference for male company

Jae has questioned himself on this: 

"Is it because I don't have interest in girls?"

"Is it okay to [hang out like this] with all guys(?)"

 

He even mentioned not needing a girlfriend as long as he had his guys by his side:

Jae tweeted this to Junsu: "I think I can do without a girlfriend^^ Yesterday while we were shooting, after a long time - I felt that it is enough just having you guys^^ã…Ž You've given me so much strength, Junsu-yah^^ We're in this together for a lifetime. Thank you, for being by my side."

Jae seems to prefer male company and hasn't changed that. It doesn't seem to matter what others may think or what rumors pop up. An article even circulated speculating Hong Seok Cheon to be his boyfriend. Which angered many.

 

 

I'm sure Jaejoong is aware of all these rumors and speculations (and he even speculated himself...maybe he has no interest in girls?), but all this hasn't dissuaded him from spending most of his time in the company of men. Even after the gay rumors of him with HSC were published in Chinese papers in Hong Kong (then spread to Singapore media and Vietnamese sites), Jae still hangs around HSC at his Itaewon restaurants. I really love him for this. <3 They have a really good friendship. Most recently on June 2013:

 

 

 

Spending time with mostly men (many of them either openly gay or speculated to be gay) might not mean someone is gay. But what caught me was how he talks about the females he's been around...and the reason why Jae says he doesn't hang around them. He speaks as if he has to compete with them for male attention:

 

 

 

In the 2009 interview, Jae said he doesn't call up girls when hanging out with his male friends because then all the attention would be on her. In the 2012 interview, he said he stopped contact with a girl because she dated alot of guys, including some of his close friends.

 

This might be a personal interpretation....but I'm getting a hint of jealousy from Jae when I'm reading these interviews. He doesn't hang around girls because they take male attention away from him? In the 2009 interview, it feels like he's saying he has to compete more for male attention when a girl is around. And the 2012 interview, he appears jealous that the girl has dated some of his close male friends (maybe ones he has shown interest in?). Since it was the girl he stopped contact with (and he said "friendship is very important to me"), it's more likely he's jealous of the girl dating these guys than of his male friends dating the girl. 

 

I don't know of many straight guys who would feel threatened and compete with females for male attention in a social environment. Of course, I may have interpreted the words of these interviews wrong, so seeing Jae's facial expressions and demeanor would help. And there are gifs and images showing Jaejoong looking jealous around other females! Most of these videos/images are of his attraction to Yunho though, (mainly because this relationship was most often seen in public and recorded) but I'm sure he's had similar reaction around other males...

2. Kissing Men
I mentioned the first thing that Jae associated with Junsu's kiss to another man was if Junsu's character is gay.

 

 

...yet Jae himself has kissed men (both before and after Junsu's role in Elisabeth). And it's not just kissing his members as "fanservice". Jae is aware of potential speculations between him and Yihan regarding their roles in "Dr. Jin":

 

 

So Jae's aware of people misunderstanding their close chemistry. He even questioned the way Yihan looked at him because Yihan's name was associated with the word "gay" on internet searches. Hmmm...so how did Jae respond to this?

 

He further encourages the speculations!    I think when Jae said he "questioned the way [Yihan] looked at [him]" because he noticed the word "gay" was related to his name online...he may have been hoping that Yihan was seriously gay:

 

 

 

So he mentioned being grateful to accept being best couple with Yihan, and then when asked about his ideal type, he chooses Youngwi/Yihan over his female co-star. Then he states that "girls appearance..are really not that important". It's the person inside that counts.

I don't think Yihan is gay though; And Yihan doesn't seem to feel similar about the attraction between them:

Since I wrote an analysis on Key, I thought Jaejoong needed one too. There are many similarities I see between them: they both are straightforward people who don't seem to care what others think; they both also do/say things that hint at them being gay and not being ashamed of it. So I get a feeling both of them are already open about their sexuality in their personal lives. However, a difference is that while Key is indirect about it and shows some restraint in what he shares, Jae has less of a filter.

 

The main thing to strike me with Jae is that he's aware of things being "gay" (or implied as gay)...and he'll go out and continue doing whatever it was that he considered gay (fully aware of how others will perceive it). This alone doesn't mean anything of course, but when he consistently does it...it sure does imply that he doesn't give a shit if people think he's gay. So either he's a really, REALLY open-minded person who's confident/secure on his sexuality as a straight man to fool around, but often wonders if it's gay and likes trolling people about it......or he's simply gay and doesn't hide his true feelings.

(HINT: Jae's not a confident person ("I am currently working hard towards revival (of self-confidence)" -JJ) nor does he like deceiving fans ("what good would it do for me to hide things like this. I’m pretty sure most of my fans know all of this by day....It’s not like I can deny things that my fans already know about."-JJ), however, he is honest and direct in what he expresses:"I have always been straightforward ...I wished that my fans liked me for my straightforwardness and fans who liked me for my looks will probably be minority." -JJ )

 

1. Awareness of what's considered gay (or implied as gay/weird for guys)

This 1st section might not indicate anything about him being gay. This is just a list showing that Jae is aware of what's considered "gay". I will expand on some of these points in the subsequent sections.

 

Before I begin, here is Jae's pre-debut (2002) opinions on gay relationships:

Okay, so Jae often wonders about things being gay. He's also aware of what people perceive as weird. Now the interesting thing isn't just that he wonders if something's gay (or that he does something with implied gayness that other people find weird). No. What's interesting is that he continues doing whatever it was that he considered gay, and even says/does things to further strengthen that speculation (as if he actively wants people to think he's gay if he wasn't already).

It's interesting he didn't simply write "With Kibummie. Good friend, friend for life" ..but instead, he stresses that they're "Very very!!" good friends ;) ...and friend for life. The "Very very!!" could imply "more than" friends (because of course he can't write boyfriend, =p)

How are we really to suspect these idols of being gay?    (exclude key and jokwon LOL) 

 

What im trying to say is how much is enough to think someone is gay? Like Taemin for example. i think he might be gay too but idk?

Alot of Idols sleep together, shower together, play kissing games, and display alot of physical closeness...but I don't speculate them being gay just becuase they engage in those activities. Comfort is to be expected when they live together and have spent alot of time bonding with eachother since their trainee days.

 

I would say that I speculate more based on their reaction to the skinship (is there attraction or just brotherly affection?). This is a bit difficult becuase it's also dependent on the background/personalities of the person. Key doesn't seek out skinship or engage in overt fanservice, yet I think he's gay. Jaejoong seeks out skinship and is obvious in displaying it, and I also think he's gay/bi. So there's not really a critieria, you have to understand the person behind it too (Jae's an impulsive person who likes to be showered with love/attention, while Key is more practical and aware (and still has an image to maintain under SM)).

 

I also speculate based on suspicious statements they make (like when talking about ideal types and relationships). Because sometimes they may slip up or contradict themselves, which can make you question what they really mean.

i dont know if this was mentioned before, but when idols are speculated to be gay from the korean society, they are often asked about it by MCs and stuff. (eg. Soohyun, Kevin, Jokwon, etc) But i wonder why i have never seen them ask key? i could be wrong, but i dont think anyone has ever asked him. either he bluntly didnt lie about it and said yes and it didnt get into the cut, or he was never asked in general. 

 

Whats strange is that at a same event that Ukiss and SHINee was at, Soohyun and Kevin were asked about gay rumors, but the next cut in the video was key, but he was never asked about gay rumors.

I've always wondered that too. I think Key may have addressed gay rumors before, but it could have been edited it out to prevent controversy (like how they did with Hong Seok Cheon). There was an episode of Weekly Idol where every member of SHINee had to answer a tough question but only Key's part was suspiciously edited out. I've been curious as why his part got cut, since the cut was quite obvious.

I've been busy with work lately, but I will definately post about Jae since I already have something started and don't want my reseach going to waste, lol. It's going to be focused only on Jae though, and I won't go much into any pairings. (I know people often use YunJae as evidence of him being gay, but I've never followed any pairings in depth, so I'm probably not qualified to write on it. But if I think Jae is gay/bi, it should be despite any pairings anyways).

I think it's new. His hair is different, and he's not wearing any of the rings/bracelets he had on in all the previous photos of him with that shirt.
