I agree, the RM cast is funny but an entire episode of basically only setting up the mission is just not that interesting. It reminded me of Strong Heart which is fine for Strong Heart but RM is not that. The PDs were clever to take advantage of the cast wrt casting guests but it was soooo long. And I really want to know what Kwangsoo said to get Uee to come, it seemed like she expected exactly the opposite of what she got and she was trying to leave to get her other schedules but they wouldn't let her. lol

Unpretty Rapstar Season 2 official thread, but I'm not a rapper~
gillyweeds replied to elolery's topic in Variety Shows
yeah for some reason, lyrics are third to looking good and sounding cool. It's kind of frustrating for me specifically because I think some of them (Hyorin and Truedy) have been coasting off of that. It's weird because if the judges don't particularly care about what the contestant is saying then why do they bother with diss battles? Why don't they just do regular rap stages? -

yes I'm really kind of over the ones who aren't getting into the meat of a diss battle. Her and Hyorin's lyrics were so amateurish and general (like honestly, Hyorin what significance does gnaal have to Yubin?). Also I understand that half of being a good rapper is being able to actually perform your verses with charisma and presence but it sucks that the bad lyricists are winning simply because their competition stumbles or stutters. IMO, this season is basically being judged by who looks the best on stage and who can remember their verse the best. I didn't watch season one so I can't compare but I thought a big part of this show would be about how clever they are at making raps. -

I appreciate you for subbing the episodes. But I don't agree on your views about Truedy's cultural appropriation. It's a tricky subject because we're all coming from our own backgrounds/experiences and conversing with each other from there but basically Nicki Minaj (as flawed as she is) kind of sums up how I feel about appreciating and appropriating cultures: Truedy's cherry picking of what she likes/emulates about black culture and what she doesn't care about is why it's a problem especially when you consider that things like hair and clothes are important, identifying parts of black culture (really all cultures) and the fact that anti-black sentiment (not just darker skin is bad but black people are bad) is an international phenom. Her general portrayed ignorance about black people and black lives is why I consider it appropriation instead appreciation. Willful and persistent ignorance + interest in assuming parts of culture that you're not originally apart of will always be negative. -
I know that this thread will get out of hand pretty quickly. Is there someone here who can watch it and close if necessary?

Unpretty Rapstar Season 2 official thread, but I'm not a rapper~
gillyweeds replied to elolery's topic in Variety Shows
Okay I've watched it a couple times now and obviously no one was perfect but Yezi and KittiB were just more well rounded than everyone else. Gilme was trying really hard it looked awkward. Soomin is also one who needs to work on stage presence, at some points she seemed like the Tinman to me. AshB wasn't bad but she seemed dull in that performance which made Gilme's hype-ness even more awk, surprisingly. Heize was below average for an underground rapper but I hope she stays for a while just so I can see her start trouble (her saying bye to KittiB was funny). More than anything I'm impressed that Sua went up there and was one of the best when it came to being confident and working the stage. Truedy I was disappointed in because on SMTM livestream she was the best and she has the most natural charisma but I hope that she doesn't default to her past verses in this competition. Also I kinda think her Tasha-ness is nagl. I really wish that Hyorin get out of her idol rapping comfort zone. I know that if she sticks to what she knows she'll get moderately far but there's no reason to be on the show to rap like it's an everyday Sistar performance. I need her to hyper focus on writing (there are no translations but I know she's weak when it comes to lyrics) and gestures. Yubin and Kasper need to pace themselves, watching them try to catch up to their lyrics was depressing. I'm hoping Yubin comes hard on the official first episode. edit: are there any translated lyrics yet? -

one of the things that I think that Hyorin is gonna have over all of them is that it seems like most of the other rappers are either have p. poor breath control or easily succumbs to nerves. I didn't watch season 1, did it happen there too? Or it was it just a first week jitters type deal? -
I don't know to be honest, some fantaker was saying that you can write cheering messages to Hyolyn on it and someone else said that that wasn't true and Hyolyn doesn't have an official fancafe. I was just wondering if anyone here knew anything about it. I guess it doesn't really matter. btw, I see Gfriend's teaser in your sig, do you know of any varieties with them? After someone on twitter showed me Yuju's singing, I kinda wanna find out more about the group~
-
I was wondering if anyone tried writing Hyolyn a message on HyolynDay? And if they know if she reads them in her spare time?
-
I'm really hoping against all hope that Hyolyn becomes a judge for this upcoming season of Unpretty Rapstar. Yeah, she's not a rapper but Hyo has shown that's she's pretty knowledgeable about hip-hop and rap. Her and hip-hop have a pretty good relationship (the viral video of her performing with MadC, Sistar's most recent Sketchbook appearance, and the many times Hyo had a rap break in Sistar songs). Plus with her experience as a lyricist and budding career as a composer, she could totally relate to the contestants who have to write their own verses. Plus, people have been saying that UR needs some females to judge it and we know that Hyolyn will judge them according to their talent and determination instead of just looks. And to top it all off, UR would be the perfect place for Hyolyn to begin to seriously push her solo career. Not only will she be mingling with artists who make the same genre of music that she wants to make, but she'll also be in front of an audience who listens to the type of music she wants to make. Plus don't the judges collab with the top contestants? All around it would be an incredibly smart way for her to start appealing to an audience as a solo artist. I also thought that she'd be good as the host of I am a singer. I think the audience for that show was pretty impressed with her last season and she'd be like a kind of mascot for what hard work can accomplish.
-
thank goodness! I feel like even if Hyolyn is interested in just music there are so many things that she could do with music besides singing shows (although I don't mind those either). I hope to see those wants realized throughout this year.
-
so I was watching Sistar on this Afreeca livestream and at 21:59 she talks about her solo stuff? I can't make out everything but I think she also says that she'd like to do radio VJ work in the future (she says the other members have done special VJing but not her).I saw some hyotties having a discussion about this on twitter a while back. I think she'd be really good at MCing stuff, she was great on 1000 song challenge. I hope to see her expand her work horizons in the future!

I just wanted to say, if you're disappointed in what we've seen so far with Sistar's comeback/concept, (I don't know if anyone is or not in this thread) one of main/most important parts of Sistar's current music, image, concepts and brand is Hyolyn's vocals. With this comeback we're pretty much guaranteed to get lots of Hyolyn singing! Just a silver lining I thought I'd point out~
-
While I'm still wary about Sistar's comeback this gif gives me hope, they all look so hot. Black haired Hyolyn is life.
-
exactly, le sigh. at this point I'm not even upset at the lackluster concept, I'm just wondering why everything that we've gotten so far has been so cheap looking. You guys' signatures look waaaaaay better than all of the teasers we've gotten so far. I mean, it would've been amazing if your sig was an actual teaser--it fits right in with Starship's ever changing concept-concept (lol). having star1s submit artwork for the cover would've been a great idea, not only would it mean that the covers were made with love, time and care, but it would've been a great (non-trollship) way to build up momentum for this comeback.
-
I'm not even mad that they dropped DC villains, it's understandable, but why do all the teasers look like they were done by an amateur? I don't even mind that everything so far has only slightly been an #evilcharmer concept, but why are Sistar's teasers so plain? So far everything's been misleading, clumsy, boring or disappointing. I thought there'd be a silver lining with the 4 different album covers but I don't know if I want to pay $80 for albums with a photobook/cover that look anything like the teasers we've seen so far. I know a lot of us wanted this comeback to be the one where Sistar comes roaring back to the forefront, to make everyone recognize them as a contender for the best girl group but so far only the names of the songs (and the fact that Sistar is singing them) has inspired hope for a turnaround in Sistar's career. I can now only wish that Starship used the money they saved from the teasers and put it to the actual music video and that the songs on this album are amazing.

I hope that Starship would promote Sistar in other Asian countries--especially because I've seen the fancams and they've got a lot of fans--but I also think that there is more that Starship could do for Sistar in Korea. They've done a lot with their brand of public relevancy and fanbase but I do think that they could go higher. To the point where they could hold concerts in Korea if they wanted to. I think that the extent of Sistar's Asia promotions is gonna be Skechers Meet and Greets, which is clever and kinda cheap because Starship doesn't have to do much to put it together. Although I really hope that they put in a little more effort than that. My fear is that Sistar is Starship's foot into other markets but that they won't dive in with them. Like, Sistar's presence will help whatever negotiations SS has but Sistar won't really do promotions in other countries--just kinda pop in for a concert with other acts. Oh and I hope that Hyolyn does more varieties for this comeback, someone said that Starship was adding schedules to their calendar after the members had already done them so maybe that's why Hyolyn schedules look particularly empty. I really hope it's not like last time, last time it made no sense that Dasom and Hyolyn did not that many appearances. edit: praying that Hyolyn's solo comeback isn't some kind of after thought that she has to squeeze in between a group comeback and a collaboration. I, honestly, would be fine if she didn't comeback this year at all. I want her to be able to put her full attention on her solo and whatever appearances she makes to promote instead of splitting her attention a million different ways like last time. I mean, I know she could do it, but I hate that she has to choose/sacrifice her solo for other things.

Hyolyn choosen as the #5 best idol soloist in an Arirang poll (as voted by other idols): http://onehallyu.com/topic/182837-idols-pick-top-5-idols-best-soloist/

I think I'm done with the Sistar thread. The worst part is that there are people in there who are trying to explain why that comment is so offensive--not just to Hyolyn but to the millions of people and Sistar/Hyolyn FANS who do not have fair skin--and they're brushing it off as attacking and being mean. Plus the apology is one of those "sorry you were offended, can we get over it now?" Plus onlookers who are just miffed that there are so many replies but none about a comeback. It's just so disappointing and upsetting. One's love for Hyolyn doesn't have to be unconditional but it shouldn't be based on the color of her skin.

The B.E.S.T SISTAR Official Thread - FOUREVER SISTAR
gillyweeds replied to UMJI MOODS's topic in Groups
Exactly, Hyolyn said it best herself, no matter what: people who don't like her, won't like her. She's not gonna change her looks to try and appeal to people who only care about superficial things. For past couple of years she's been comfortable in her skin and I don't think it's fair for anyone to want to change those things about her to "fit a standard." Furthermore, I don't appreciate the idea/opinion that Hyolyn would be better off with fairer skin. Skin color is a sensitive topic all over the world and there are people (fans) who have skin tones darker than Hyolyn. For those people to potentially come into this Sistar thread and see comments about how darker skin tones ""maybe"" affect Hyolyn's popularity could be damaging to them. The Sistar thread is a safe haven for star1s but it is also a representation of us in general to the outsiders looking in. I get that in S. Korea a darker skin tone is not ideal but instead of wanting Hyolyn to conform to that, we should support her own choices. Sistar as a group isn't a visual ideal in S. Korea but they've managed to get to where they are without succumbing to what the public thinks/wants. -

Just watched the first two episodes and I think this show is pretty good, I love the potential for it to get dark and the fact that Dae Chul's masked justice is fu#king up his life is such a wonderful and terrible plot. I cannot wait to get more information about Min Hee and her story.- 3 replies
