[Exclusive Interview] HelloVenus Charms the Boys at First Concert and Talks Having Tea with Lee Seung Gi
When HelloVenus made its debut a year ago, the girls had their sights set high on being the goddesses of the K-Pop world, and the girl group proved that it has K-Pop fans – or at least, the boys – spellbound at its first exclusive concert. After selling out tickets to its June 22 concert within a minute, HelloVenus added a second day to itsHelloVenus 1st Live Concert, performing a total of two shows at Sogang University’s Mary Hall in Seoul from June 22 to 23.
Mwave sat down with the members, who are currently promoting latest single Would You Like Tea?, for an exclusive interview moments before they went on stage for its second show to talk about first concert jitters.
Yooyoung said, “We’re shocked by the fact that we can have a concert only a year after our debut, and more people than we expected have shown us love, so we worked extra hard to repay their anticipation. We’re also really nervous now.â€
With one show down, Nara added, “To be honest, I was really nervous yesterday and made a lot of mistakes, but I want to do better today and wrap up the concert successfully.â€
Alice said that the first show gave her the extra boost of confidence she need, saying “Maybe it’s because it’s our first concert, but I’m really nervous, but I think I was able to gain strength and work hard thanks to the fans from yesterday who cheered us on so much.â€
She continued, “Thanks to their cheers, my nervousness has subsided a little, and I’m thankful that we’re able to have a concert in a little over a year [since our debut].â€
Soon, it was time for us to take our seats and enjoy the show – along with the hundreds of male fans who flooded the hall. Although we spotted a few female fans in the crowd, it was clear that HelloVenus brings the boys out.
And despite their apparent nervousness before the show, once the girls hit the stage, the HelloVenus members got into goddess modem kicking off the show with performances of Hello, debut single Venusand Love Appeal to cheers from the crowd.
After brief member introductions, the girls continued to charm fans with performances of What Are You Doing Today, Like a Wave as well as a swing version of First Love.
The girls would go on to perform a number of tracks from their three mini albums released thus far, including Would You Like Tea?, but the highlight of the night was the group’s cover of hip hop duo Geeks’ remake of Tamia’s Officially Missing You.
Not only did Yoo Ara and member Alice take up the keyboard and guitar, respectively, for the special stage, each of the members wrote the lyrics to their own rap and narration parts in the song, impressing fans with their songwriting skills.
Singer Lee Jung also made an appearance to make the night even more special. And despite the tough crowd of mostly males, he managed to draw laughs, saying “I thought this was the army†upon seeing the crowd of men, as well as applause with his personality and performance.
While we’re sure the male fans would kill to have a cup of tea with the group – one male fan was lucky enough to be called on to the stage during HelloVenus’ performance of Kiss Me - we couldn’t let the girls go without asking them who they’d like to invite to tea during our interview.
Alice said, “I want to have tea with Lee Jung sunbaenim, who is a guest at today’s concert,†to laughs from the other members, leading her to jump in saying, “What? Does [the answer] seem rushed?†Meanwhile, Yooyoung chose actor Jung Gyu Woon, who narrated a track in the group’s latest album, saying “He’s really thoughtful.†Gu Family Book appeared to be a hit among the HelloVenus members as Yoon Jo chose Lee Seung Gi, while Lime chose Choi Jin Hyuk. Nara said, “I want to have tea with everyone who comes today†to joking groans from her fellow members, who said, “What is that?†and “Are you kidding?†Yooara followed suit, saying “Then I’m going to say my dad. I want to have tea with my dad.â€
On plans to meet global fans, Yooara said, “Although nothing has been set in stone, if the opportunity arises, we want to promote abroad.â€
Yooyoung added, “With Psy sunbaenim recently ranking high on the Billboard charts, shaking up America with Gangnam Style - we don’t even need a stage, even the streets are okay – we want to perform in America.†In a final message to global fans, Lime said, “We’ll continue to work hard, so next time we can stand on an even bigger stage. Please look after us positively†before adding in English, “I love you.â€
While the future looks bright for the girls, by the concert’s end, it was clear that the here and now was all that mattered in the moment for the group.
Alice closed the night, saying “Yesterday—maybe it was because we were still nervous thinking about the fact that we had another show tomorrow—I couldn’t look into the audience, but today, I see each and every one of you,†indicating the concert would be one the girls will never forget.
