Part of this denial is, of course, the fantasy fans harbor, but another part is the facade of politeness that homophobia creates. I'm reminded of a quote by Dan Savage: "My mum was of the generation when thinking someone was gay was literally the worst thing you could think of them, so you didn't think that -- 'cause that meant you were a terrible person. My mother thought Liberace was straight." -
