Any highlights/thoughts on Beyoncé’s new album vocally?
-
Does anyone know how Seonho (ONEUS), Jongho (Ateez), Woobin and Chan (ACE) actually measure up against each other? Every time I see a vocal ranking usually they’re up there but the rankings are always a bit different lol
-
Bey’s new song, anything new here? There’s a few C#3’s (or might be B2’s i’m not sure lol) and a C#5-Eb5 slide on the last chorus on “everybody”. It sounds good but I don’t think it’s too challenging lol.
Btw, what’s the general consensus on Chloe & Halle? Both have relatively developed HVs… I think? I’ve noticed Chloe doesn’t really go above D5 but I’ve heard ease down to E3 at the very least. I think Halle might be a bit better despite being lighter than Chloe?
Solo Halle:
Solo Chloe:
(sorry I know none of this is Kpop lol but I went down the R&B rabbit hole a bit)

Based on what we’ve seen so far, who has the better mix between Haewon and NN? Is Haewon’s problems with nasality too much to give her the edge over NN? IMO Haewon seems more bold and maybe a better sense of coordination, at least in the 5th octave? Not sure how their midranges compare

My bad I thought u were talking about her Coachella, I got confused there sorry
No prob
her coachella was iconic we know nobody’s keeping up with that. This was when she was a lot more unrefined. i just thought her oversinging tendencies when she was younger is funny.
Like here, the runs was sooo excessive

Beyonce had years of experience (and yeah that matter ) none of the active idols have including the 2nd gen
Eh, she was only like 22/23 in this vid, so it’s pretty much in line with how long most idols have been active (2nd gen is reaching like a decade and a half now lol)

Not K-Pop related but Beyoncé might just be the funniest vocalist on Earth just because of how extra she was with her oversinging the 2000’s
Even with all the extra-ness there still wasn’t anyone in K-Pop touching her agility and mixed

Cool video. It’s not really stating… anything new (even when it comes to showcasing clips). Also is it just me or did the creator do Wendy super dirty with the belting section lol. There’s obv a gap between their mid belts but Wendy has much better A4-C5 videos to showcase.
Also, I don’t personally think the gap in agility between them is notable at all (I’d honestly give it to Wendy do to her being more daring to do runs in HV). Last note and cmiiw, but doesn’t Taeyeon have F#3 fairly consistently? I remember most of the ones in her last album being supported

First Bey performance in awhile, if anyone wanted to analysis. I could just be hearing things but I feel like some of the ease is back? There’s a few F5’s I think, but she’s breathing C5’s and they’re quite easy for her ofc

I know this is beating a dead horse a bit, but how do Bey and Celine compare to each other (both in their primes)? I’ve always thought Bey had a bit of an edge on her and should’ve been more in the “trinity”.
Also, was Whitney better in every register than Beyoncé? I really like Bey’s head voice but I’m not sure how it compares to Whitney’s lol (and I think Bey takes the cake for lows?)

Yeah that's why I gave that song as the comparison haha. Wendy, though her support on C#5s are solid, went straight into her nose and whiny. We can call it a difference in development because singing notes with a more nasal placement, with somewhat lighter coordination at that, is less taxing than what Taeyeon is doing and can do whenever she puts in the effort. The cords work more when you have to create that extra volume and projection.
Generally, Taeyeon was always 'ranked' a bit higher than Wendy. But the gap was closer because the thoughts on Wendy were less critical. For example, we always knew that Wendy 'could not produce resonance' but it was always just amounted to lack of openness in the vocal tract. Now, I'd consider it a bit more of a severe issue because not only is she not resonant, she's also mostly whiny and has less presence in her belt even though the support is relatively full. It's an issue when pretty much everybody in AA to P has a better handle at projecting notes, and Wendy's the only one (aside from Minhye who at least isn't whiny and nasal) incapable of resonance at that level.
Wendy's head voice is still better than Taeyeon, yes, but not enough to be a significant advantage. Wendy's coordination is usually just light in her head voice and the range from G5 - A5 isn't really impressive, she rarely uses it well too. She's mostly controlled up to G5, a range where Taeyeon can still handle even tho it's less full.
Wendy's lower range and midrange (like F#3 - A4) is fuller than Taeyeon yeah but Taeyeon isn't exactly messing it up either so there's not much disparity. The difference between their belting is the most obvious one. I wouldn't say belting is VERY much more prioritised, otherwise Minhye wouldn't be that high. It's a combination of all the registers and their control/development throughout, taking into account what they can or cannot do compared to one another. It can be quite relative.
Oh okay, that’s interesting. Since Wendy has such glaring problems with her mix (relative to the other people in P ofc), why was she always ranked above Yuju in her peak? I always thought Yuju had one of, if not the most balanced mixed/resonance output out of all the other top 3rd gen female vocals. Was Wendy’s well roundedness/grip on D5 the thing that gave her the edge over Yuju?

The general consensus is that Taeyeon simply does better in her mix. When belting in the A4-Eb5 range, Taeyeon maintains a more consistently open, forward and more "resonant" sound, versus Wendy who has a slightly nasal, slightly whiny tone production throughout that kinda inhibits her sound. Their lower ranges are about the same in terms of development, with Wendy having a minor edge with her head voice + not going into lazy mode like Taeyeon does in her mid range. I actually believe they're head to head equally tied, but it is true that the development in their mixes plays an important role on why Taeyeon tends to be ranked higher.
I wouldn't say they're that equally tied. Taeyeon, for a long time, has been putting out effort and building that strength in her belts. And she has control over it, thus why her lazy mode is there.
This is Taeyeon in her more or less lazy, slightly tired mode. @3.30, C#5 still has a bit more strength than what Wendy shows but overall this performance was meh.
@3.30 to the end, here Taeyeon brings more effort and tbh Wendy has never pulled off those kind of C#5s. She's too soft, whiny and kinda light (dunno how the original consensus was Wendy was too chesty).
The only thing Wendy really has over Taeyeon in the mixed is the good placement she has Eb5-F#5 but it's not exactly Eunji level so Taeyeon's presence throughout the range they both support in is much more obvious. Resonance indicates development and coordination too, both of which Wendy lacks to have the bigger, stronger sound .

You can really hear the difference in their mixing here (even without the concert mic reverb/echo).
Im guessing the reason why Wendy and Taeyeon were initially equal was because of Wendy’s development in her other registers? I think the gap between their HV development is a bit more than tiny, and maybe Wendy has more presence with her lows?

Quick question, how good is Jongho from Ateez? He’s quite controversial and I know his quality of support can be inconsistent but he seems fine in the D3-Eb3-F#4ish(though sometimes he has an occasional alright G4 despite tongue tension and REALLY present nasality). I think he’s like… somewhere around Youngjae level or slightly lower?
Here’s some videos for reference:

Mmh some of the rankings are definitely very questionable, I sometimes feel like those creators don’t really add their own thoughts and kinda repeat what everyone is saying… No hate
No shade but the irony of you of all people saying this lol…

Can someone give more insight for little mix (Ot3)? I read somewhere that they only support up to B4 with inconsistent C5’s from Perrie but… I feel like they’re quite a bit better than this. Here are some recent videos

I just think the @ at CY is kinda missing the mark because you may be a lurker, but you may not have the entire context of exactly where certain attitudes are coming from. Certain people in the thread very much have made themselves deserving of certain kinds of response, and I'll happily @ Ahmin even tho he's long gone, @ VT Evil Queen even tho he's gone, @ Pandayeu, basically the entire blog team lmao, and @ Koreaxxlove or however it's spelled. especially when having been on the receiving end of the exact attitude you're calling out for *years* and doing absolutely nothing about it because of obviously trying to be civil and giving people a chance to change their behaviors when properly calling them out for it, but being the "grown" person in a situation has its limits and quite frankly I myself think its bullshit that the person on the receiving end of shitty behavior is expected to "not react poorly" instead of putting it on the people being shitty in the first place to simply not be shit people.
I see where you’re coming from. My point was just that even some of the most “educated/informed” people in this thread have had plenty of moments of being wrong, and that everyone has to start somewhere.
I think a better example would be @BAZISSINO. If I tried, I could probably find some moments of him being wrong/contradicting himself, which is perfectly fine because we’re not always gonna be 100% on the mark, especially when it comes to something as controversial as vocals. I just don’t think people in this thread should have the attitude of genuinely reasonable questions (such as comparing the development between Ningning and SeoJess) as stupid, when none of us are 100% correct at all times. Like you said, this is a discussion forum, I think it would be better all around if people were just generally nicer with asking/answering questions instead of fearing they’ll catch unwarranted shade from quite a few users on here.

As a long time lurker I just popped in to say, a lot of people in this thread need to stop the mean girl attitudes and get off their high horses. I really enjoy reading about vocal pedagogy and this thread is very informative at times, but the weird answers are so unnecessary and off putting lol. Especially from users like @Oriane, who I’ve noticed has quite literally just echoes what is said by other users in the thread/the plot and has never provided a single analysis on an idol/video… ever. It’s not a cute look, stop it.
Let’s be honest, none of us are 100% right all the time. @C.Y. has had QUITE a few misconceptions over the time this thread has been active, same with just about everyone else and the whole baritone/tenor situations. It’s normal, we’re all learning.
I just wanna give special thanks to the ones who give really in depth answers in a civil way, specially @ZRH23 . It’s really nice and I learn a lot. But seriously, you guys just need to relax a bit lol. It’s just K-pop.

Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)
in The Lobby
Posted · Edited by Karinas
Mainly a question for @ZRH23, but open for everyone ofc. Any thoughts on Bey’s vocals recently? She obviously doesn’t have the ease on the upper 5th octave like she used to, but how’s her general development? Renaissance was obviously a more experimental album and she was obviously trying to be much lighter but I think it was a good compromise because her voice sounds a lot less..constricted?
Also, is Jojo still a mezzo? It could just be that she’s really good but her upper belts seem a bit too easy
