In case anybody missed these proper gems of Younha getting her dance on, here are a few vids!
EDIT: )): I also realised that they deleted Younha's Live version of My Song And (English) off of Youtube. T_T There's only the fancam of that dubbed over with the Korean version left

OMG SO EXCITED AT ALL THE COMMENTS.
THAT COVER OF DO YOU WANNA BUILD A SNOWMAN IS PERFECTT! Omg the pianoooo and sound effects she does makes me so happyy. She changes her voice to sound like Anna's tomboyish childish voice too! And her english is flawlesss as usual <3
@evenastoppedclock those subs are perfect <3 <3 thanks so much! And yes, every time I think of Younha's English, that Officially Missing You cover plays in my head for a few seconds.. too bad its so short ):
Allkpop is always covering rubbish that can be made to look controversial or start fanwars instead of any actual content. I mean, its quite obvious to anyone's ears that Younha > YoonA when it comes to singing and vocal ability. How is that even anything to report about? They just put YoonA's name in there to get the clicks coming. It's annoying that they have such a huge readership too, stuff they post can become popular opinion amongst international fans. [/rant]
here is Younha without makeup in 2012

Looking at the other parts, Younha still has the moves! That popping is amazing! That Sistar Ma Boy stiff dance was all a pretense, she can dance if she wants to.
lol @ Kyuhyun being immersed during her performance of the song!
She looks great without make-up! Reminiscent of her early days in the Japanese market, where they put minimal styling on her in her Jap MV's
I know you're one of the followers lol. It's hard to miss the name being the same. But then again, not everyone reads their followers' names and checks the notes as often as I do.
And not to sound weird but I actually have looked through you blog a bit and I did read the tags I apologize but you post a lot of good stuff and I agree with you on so many of the things that you post unrelated to kpopLOL. I sent you a message once on your blog to thank you for running it, but it was as Anon cuz I don't have a tumblr. That was before I made an OH account too

CONGRATS ON 100 PAGES! *clap clap clap*

Haha I knew it was gonna come eventually but it was a surprise when it did!
Raku did message me once on the HelloYounha site asking if I spoke Korean/was interested in subbing. So far I think they haven't been able to find dedicated subbers :/ I'm not sure my Korean is good enough to sub spoken words.. they speak really fast :O
-
Ah, actually I made a mistake. The fans have been asking her to do "Let It Go" from Frozen. Lol.
Yes, that one is #37 on the playlist!

Omg I read your comment before I watched the vid and I was all excited to see how she does Let It Go! Do You Wanna Build a Snowman is even better though imo! Let It Go has been covered a gazillion times, if she sings it all it'll do is create comparisons between her and everyone else who did so before. Plus Do You Wanna Build a Snowman is much faster, her English must be improving!
)): I wonder where we can find a subbed vid when it does come out

SM the Ballad, actually, but how could you take that from me?! I was going to post it
my two ultimate biases in the same room...talking to each other...making the DJs consider making them permanent guests... I still believe it could have happened in an alternate reality
Oops, my bad lol. You can always keep posting about it though ;D Any form of spazz is encouraged in the thread! I can't wait for the interactions between them! I hope Kyu protects Younha from all the ragging the other hosts tend to do (Kim Gura I'm side-eyeing you
). Thankfully the other guests are quite senior/old as well so I don't think the MC's will kick up a lot of dust Prolly my favourite 아니야 I love how it changes so much in the second half or rock like stars (because it has Tiger JK just moaning into the mic for like 20 seconds)
Haha we have different tastes! 아니야 is probably my least favourite song produced from her, across all her albums. It gets too wail-ish and shrill towards the end x.x But I forgive her for that because that album gave us Sea Child OMG THE FEELS in that song

Oooh, I've visited the reddit Youna subthread before.. but I didn't know they kept it updated as well :O. There are more international fans out there than we thought! We should gather them all here haha xD
-
I'm just a casual fan of Ivy's, but please make a section dedicated to her awesome live performances and put 'Invitation' in there :D that stage I feel would convert more fans haha
-
Already on the list-making task haha. Up to 35 so far.
Are you talking about this one?
HAHA YASS that's the one. Wow.. 35 songs, what other gems do you have in there :O Mind sharing the list?
-
Yup! That's already on my list
I have 35 songs so far.I'm majoring in Professional Writing, so I steered clear away from physics haha. I mean, I love science, but it's not what I want to focus on. Yeah, Sanskrit would be very interesting when you twist it all together with world history and the development of languages. That was my goal with Latin because I'm a writing major whose native language is English, so I might as well take Latin to understand the history of my language and grammar and stuff. Are you from India at all or just go there sometimes that you might need the languages?
Kyuhyun's on that show that Younha's going to be on soon, right? Radio Star?
Yeap, they've had interactions in the past as well.

Where Younha chooses Kyuhyun as her ideal type in
Suju KRYSM The Ballad (I remembered it wrongly lol) -
Well how I found her is a bit...random... I listen to Korean radio at work a lot for background noise, during this time I heard Younha's songs often enough and liked them (didn't know it was her songs at the time). After a couple months I found a show I really liked (guess which lol). Then I stumbled on her Arirang interview show with kpoppin and had one of those "I KNOW WHO THAT IS!" as I learned it was her doing the radio show I listened to everyday. Found out from that she was also singer, searched up her music and well...really blew my mind. This all could have been avoided if I had just looked at the name of the radio show I was listening to everyday

tl;dr: The DJ of the radio show I liked also turned out to be the singer of a bunch of songs I liked but didn't know who the singer was
Wow, that is indeed a funny way to discover her. Hahaha it looks like fate connected all the right dots for you though! I'm curious.. which song caught your attention from her? For me it was hmm.. a long time ago, I think it was My Song And.. (the original English version), and then Memories or Strawberry Days.
They look really good together. I'm looking forward to new music from her, this collab should be interesting.Welcome to the thread! Stick around and don't forget to drop by when she releases new stuff :D
Sounds like my Younha song routine. I put Supersonic, Just Listen, and Subsonic all in one playlist because they are my current favorites. They are also the most "real" songs by Younha. I don't know how much you know, but those albums came out after Younha's lawsuit with her previous agency. Since then, she has been having a ton more input in her work and she has been experimenting broadly with genres and collaborations. Those three albums, I feel, truly represent Younha for what she is.
Edit: Unless you meant only the songs titled "Just Listen," "Supersonic," and "Subsonic" rather than the albums of those same names. Either way, same thing lol.
The albums I feel to be more Younha (lol) are Supersonic, Subsonic and Just Listen too. Her discography is actually split in my head as 'Before Supersonic' and 'After Supersonic'. Or really, before and after lawsuit. I really like her Someday and 3B: Growing Season too, but those types of songs I think are bygones for our current Younha. They sound mellow (in a good chill way) compared to the amount of feels her newer songs give off.
Speaking of other languages, how is her English? The only sentence I remember her saying was on arirang interview and that was "I LOVE FOOD!"
She's improved immensely since 2010-ish. Right now, her English is great in that her pronunciation is spot-on. She pronounces things like a native speaker, although heavily influenced with the American accent. She hasn't got a full grasp of it yet though, particularly stuff like grammar (Korean grammar is way different from English grammar). But its good enough to hold daily conversations. When she's speaking a grammatically correct sentence, you wouldn't be able to tell she's a non-native speaker (: It's even better when she sings.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xf9h6n_younha-i-don-t-want-to-miss-a-thing_music (They took this off of Youtube btw, you can't find it there anymore
)She must've done at least 15 covers of English songs on the radio/at events over the years. Hmm, time to make a list haha.
Also, does anyone remember that duet she did with some lady on a TV music show? It was in English and she outsang the lady.. I can't for the life of me remember the lady's name or the song name, but I remembered liking it ): Its not Baek Ji Young and its not on Sketchbook.

Finally found this thread! been listening to her radio show and albums for months now but just couldn't find any fan places...
also seems I walked into a giant talk about words (at least her fans are active)
Welcome to the thread! Always great to see new faces in here :D We are indeed quite active (at least on this forum). Almost incredibly, the Younha thread here is the second most active (Lee Hi's no.1) of all soloist threads - beating out IU and BoA even o_O. That continues to surprise me all the time lol.
You found us right on time to join the spazz that'll happen over her concert and upcoming new releases :D Why not tell us more on how you found Younha (not many people hear her over the sea of idols) and your fav songs + other biases?
-
JJY and Younha set to collaborate!! I KNEW THIS WAS GONNA HIT US LOL. finally, a collab we needed to see!

Now we know why she put this pic out there.. it was a teaser!

It actually took me a while to pull apart '눈물' and realize that each part also meant something...so I kind of failed there, haha. And I have a moderate grasp on the language with a heavy linguistic bent to what I know (I took a class focused specifically on that for Korean and a couple of other languages). I'm decent at conversational stuff (i.e., if you wanted to speak with me at length about something I would give up a few sentences in) and I have absolutely no confidence in creating it (speaking/writing at length) compared to understanding it (hearing/reading it and understanding it). I've translated stuff in the realm of kpop (songs/announcements/short interviews), for what it's worth. So I know a lot more about it than the average person and probably the average kpop fan, but I'm not really fluent at all.
Apparently I have good pronunciation though.
I do it all the time, but that might also be because I'm a linguistics nerd
And...here's the self-proclaimed linguistics nerd forgetting the term for words like this, where joining two terms/concepts gets you a third one. What a fail
hopefully I'll remember it soon. But I absolutely love picking stuff like this apart because it's all logical thinking and puzzles, basically (which is how I taught myself basic Japanese and Korean based entirely off of song lyrics, OTL). Korean especially is a fascinating language grammar-wise (because you can basically take a noun and append the helping verb 'to do' onto it to get the verb form of it) and vocabulary-wise (because of all the logical steps in it).
- 목소리/voice = 목/throat or neck + 소리/sound
- 발목/ankle = 발/foot + 목/throat or neck
- ì†ëª©/wrist = ì†/hand + 목/throat or neck
- 눈물/tears = 눈/eye + 물/water
- 콧물/snot = 콧/derivation of nose + 물/water
And there I go too...though I did once start doodling a list of all the corresponding Korean/Japanese/English vocab that I know in class once, haha. I've been thinking about trying to learn some form of Chinese too though, do you have any thoughts on that? I'm kind of assuming that I'd end up learning Mandarin if I went through with it, but I have no idea where to begin...
心è„/xÄ«nzà ng/heart sounds like 심장/shimjang/heart...which is why sometimes when I'm listening to Chinese I can pick out some words here and there, basically.
ETA: and I completely forgot to give Hangul the love it deserves. It's the best writing system in existence, and I'm not even being biased about that. It's ridiculously simple and it fits the language like the best tailor-made glove in existence and it's so much fun to scribble in margins on top of that.
I get your feels about the hangul alphabet! SO CONVENIENT AND EASY. If only Chinese had that style of writing, it'd make the language so much more accessible.
Its the opposite for you and me x) I listen to Korean songs and use my Chinese to help me, haha. While å¿ƒè„ (mandarin) does sound like 심장 , the closer dialect is å¿ƒè„ (Hokkien, sim jang). If you're looking to learn Chinese to help with your Korean, then Hokkien is the correct dialect to learn. I really think Korean and Japanese words have some Hokkien influence in them, perhaps from waaaay long ago before Korea and Japan branched out from China.
If you're looking to learn Chinese for a more practical use, then Mandarin is probably the safest bet, followed by Cantonese. When learning Korean and English, we usually start off with memorizing the alphabet and its sounds. But with Chinese, you have to learn the word, its sound, and its meaning all at the same time. Its a complex system where reading/pronouncing, writing, and understanding the words are 3 completely separate things. Then there's the whole 4 tonal or 8 tonal system. Learning Chinese is a commitment because you really do need classes and hard work to get the language in. Its not simple like Korean ): although the grammar is very straightforward. The upside about it is that the words are all written the exact same way, but can be pronounced 10 different ways based on dialect. So once you have one dialect mastered, its quite easy to pick up more and more dialects.
High-5 btw~ I basically learnt all the Korean and Japanese I know via song lyrics LOL (thanks Younha, for introducing me to more words than just 사랑 and 아름다운). And some handy dandy online language sites. I've hit the limit though, I need actual classes now in order to advance any further.
EDIT: I think you mean compound words?
-
I think like that too because I tend to translate some stuff literally. Translating '비밀번호' as 'secret-number' instead of 'password' is going literally -- it'd be like saying '눈물' as 'eye-water' instead of 'tear(s)'. I think that's why most people aren't really connecting it like that.
Me too! Haha. I like breaking it down using the root words to get a better understanding of the word. Like 목ë§ë¼ìš” (thirsty) is 목 (throat) plus ë§ë¼, which is a version of 마른 (dry), and 목소리 is just throat + sound = voice.
If you break it down like that it's also easier to make connections between similar languages. I come from a background of multiple Chinese dialects and you wouldn't believe how similar the Korean vocabulary is to them (other than the grammar). Off the top of my head,
í¬ë§ (hwee mang) = Hope = 希望 (hei mong) < Cantonese
í•™ìƒ (hak seng) = Student = å¸ç”Ÿ (hak seng) < Hokkien
심장 (shim jang) = Heart = å¿ƒè„ (sim jang) < Hokkien
후회 (hoo hwei) = Regret = åŽæ‚” (hou hwei) < Mandarin
시간 (shi gan) = Time = 时间 (shi gan) < Hokkien or Cantonese
ê°ì‚¬ (kam sa) = Thank you = 感谢 (kam sia) < Teochew, Hakka, also Hokkien
세계 (sae gyae) = World = 世界 (seh kai) < Hokkien
ê°ë™ (kam dong) = Touched emotionally = 感動 (gan dong) < Mandarin
변태 (byun tae) = Pervert = å˜æ€ (bian tai) < Mandarin
진짜 (jin jja) = Really = 真的 (jin jia) < Hokkien (popular exclamation for both Koreans and Hokkiens)
Oops. I wanted to give a few examples but ended up wanting to make a full list of all the words I know to be the same.. ): That'll take forever so I'll stop here. but for my own future reference.. (door, room, ticket, forever, river, government, ghost, goddess/god, easy/simple, new, exercise, animal, phone, success, possessive pronoun:mine). I should make a list on Word and keep it on my computer xD All these similarities means I can sometimes understand what they're saying just by linking the root words together

Omg what exciting news in the thread since I last visited! THAT PIC WITH JUNG JOON YOUNG LOOOL. I dont know how I feel about it if she really is dating him @@. We did talk about the possibility of it early this year though I think.. so if it ends up happening at least its not a huge surprise haha.
Oh hey guys. ;D I've been stalking this place for almost a year now and never said anything. YAY!
I became a Younha fan just a little bit after Houki Boshi. My favorite album is a tie between Someday and Supersonic. My favorite song by her is between "Home" and "Set Me Free."
Hi everyone!!! I feel like I should introduce myself! So I knew Younha through this song! I love Bleach and this song!
and then I truly became a fan of her after this song
Welcome to the thread! It's always great to see more people hearing
aboutYounha :D Her voice is legit good and she writes what she sings too~
I just remembered this!
That pic of her remains one of my favourites still. Hehe, I'd like to use it as our badge but I think its not reflective of her current era x)
-
kk we have a few subsonic ones here

runner-ups from the previous voting

just thought this one might be popular

feel free to add more, and I can help you crop. I'll be looking at maximum 10 pics, to not spread the votes too thinly lol. Actually maybe 15 pics, cos a winning pic should still be a winning pic nonetheless. hmm...
also feel free to contest for the 10/15 spaces if there isn't enough space X)

These are good! :D The one with the bird tickles my fancy! Hehehe I don't know if it passes the award rules though. Are props allowed in the badges x)
Thanks for taking the effort to crop the pics! Did you use photoshop or is there some program out there to get it exactly Onehallyu format lol

Younha is going to be a surprise guest in Ultra Music Festival Korea June 13
WeAlive says she is gonna be singing the official theme song for the electronic dance music scene. Perhaps it's in collaboration with another singer but I'm not sure.
Hopefully some of you can make out better what this article is about.
http://blog.naver.com/alive0201/70190445806
Yay! New material from her is always welcomed! She sure has been busy lately.. attending a whole bunch of events and performances.
I dont think she's gonna release the album this month ): Her concert is coming up at the end of the month so she cant possibly promote it from now till then. She's probably gonna do what she did with Subsonic and unveil the teaser at the end of the concert, and then release the album a few weeks later.
-
Hey guys! Just recently finished my exams and handed in all my assignments.. phewwww. Glad to be able to surf the internet without feeling guilty anymore haha.
How goes the badge thing coming along? I think we should change the badge for sure :D But I personally don't like much of her Subsonic concept photos. I don't mind the styling, but I think the photoshoot made it look weird.. she looks better in screencaps and stuff imo.
I'll scout around and see if there's anything recent~
-
lol, does that mean you suddenly stone in the middle of studying and teleport to fantasyland? X)
I'd imagine debating (lol) in the vocals thread is enough to ruin your day. Each time I see those arguments I raise my finger to protest but stop just before that because it's not worth it lol.
Yeaa I stalk the vocals thread too. Sometimes its a pain to go through all the posts in there x.x
My brain always drifts off mid-study to imagine myself as a retiree with all the time + money in the world. Otherwise its frantically imagining failed tests and life forevermore as a broke hobo.

I hope Younha releases some piano compositions like "For Catharina" and "She Is." How cool would it be to have a super amazing piano piece with a music video? Of course, it probably wouldn't do well in the current state of the music industry... But it's just a dream of mine.
Me too! I'm greedy for all those compositions she said she wrote but filed away while going through the lawsuit. I'm positive they are good enough to release!
-
Ahhh, the greedy fan in me wishes that she'd do both now, haha.
Are there any songs that you guys would like to hear her cover?
LOTS. Almost every good song/ballad I listen to lol. Too many to name, but I always thought that 'Oars' by Lee Hyori was a song that belonged right up Younha's alley.
-
Is there any reason she doesn't sing covers more often? This sounds like it's one of the first one's she's done on Starry Night that I've heard of, at least recently...
She sang a lot of covers while she was going through that lawsuit thing. Probably because she couldn't sing any of her own songs (copyright stuff)
I guess now that she can sing and perform in public again she doesn't use the radio show as an outlet for her singing as much anymore

It was her first concert so it was probably nerves and exhaustion getting to her. It was an epic concert though~ I remember watching all the fancams wayy back. If I recall correctly it was IU that opened the concert for her too.
That hipthrust at around the 3:00 mark of the Sketchbook vid gets me everytime! I find it hilarious that the edited TV version doesn't show any of her moves LOL. I'm sad they removed the My Song And vid ): She forgot the lyrics while singing it, classic Younha style.
