  1. This is actually how I explain cultural appropriation to others. It's also looking down on another culture's ways, but then when someone who's considered "high class" starts to do it it's suddenly OK. I.E.: cornrows, nameplate necklaces, nail art, etc. were once considered "ghetto" but now it's on trend because the Kardashians do it.
  2. I think the same thing when I watch the video for 'Want'. I don't know why but he always takes me off guard. He seems so innocent and then, 'Boom!' you're pregnant.
  3. It's a voting award and award shows rarely matter nowadays; especially the MTV VMAs. Either your fan base votes for you like crazy or your record company pays for your award.
  4. I don't consider any of these groups K-pop. Their primary country that they promote in isn't Korea. It's basically like when K-pop groups promote in other countries. They might do some releases in other countries and sing in that language, but their home base and main target audience is Korea.
  5. Both groups look like they're tonight's entertainment on some cursed disney cruise line. But if I had to choose, it'd be TXT's.
  6. And IW and Endgame too! That's just so crazy to think about. And went around the world and promoted them as well. I can't imagine how tiring and painful it was for him! But you could tell he loved acting and that trumped any negativity that was happening with him. I didn't know he was in a wheelchair! Just goes to show how private he was about all this. I'm so upset about this. In his short time in the spotlight he became such a cultural icon. Not only was he T'challa, but he was also Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall and James Brown. My heart is broken.
  7. If you look closely they're not in a kids park. They're playing on inflatable pool slides and ball pit that anyone can put in their backyard (which my over 21 friends and I have done in the past and so have others with no kids involved). The only one who's riding a tricycle is Jisoo, because as was mentioned earlier she doesn't know how to ride a bike. If you look at the height of the tricycles and bikes you'll see they're all built for adults. The mini cars are things done in music videos in both Korea and the US as someone pointed out. There are multiple scenes without those as well. Is dancing on a tennis court, standing in an overpriced ice cream shop or chilling by the pool with a capybara lolita? The set differences can be explained with what restrictions each country has for filming during covid and cultural differences.
  8. I like think I'd be one of those who'd only show their face when there's a project to promote. Even then I'd tried to get out of it if I could or at least do the bare minimum. I definitely wouldn't live in California or any place where celebrities usually do. Basically I'd be under the radar.
  9. IMHO, I think that this is way better than The9's debut.
  10. If by saying west you mean america there are a few reasons why. The main reason is that co-ed pop groups don't well over here. I think the last time a co-ed pop group did well in the states, it was S Club 7 and even then it was more like the Jo show. Their music doesn't really standout either. It's the same sound that's popular (but waning) here, but there are people that do it better than KARD. Like someone said earlier, just because it has a "western sound" won't make it successful. With their new single though, I really think if DSP wants the US market they should promote it. Also, we kinda have the problem of separating stage persona from real life. Basically, if you really ain't about the concept you promote you're considered a fake. And that's the big problem facing Kpop. The disconnect between the concepts chosen for idols vs. their real personalities is a hard thing for the public over here to ignore. It comes off as ingenuine.
  11. Why do people think pastel colors = cute childish theme? You talk about Hollywood trying to make "innocent" K-pop stars sexy, and yet you're over here infantilizing women in their mid to late twenties. Why can't they have a cute, mature, poppy summer concept?
  12. For some reason, this is making realize that's it's probably the western label that these artists are associated with are the one who are pushing for the English releases. Most of the artists were fine just releasing songs in Korean. Now that they see that Kpop is very profitable, they're investing and are making sure that they're getting return on said investment. In order to keep profiting new cash flow is needed. For a while the Korean labels were doing it on their own, which gave us some of the most cringe lines in Kpop history.
  13. ^This. They already got people who are already familiar with Kpop. Now they're trying to get the public at large's favor. They just don't want you, but your mama and grandma twice removed too.
  14. This has been happening off and on for a while. I think the difference now is that there's more attention and better writers for the English releases now vs then if you look at some older releases. But I think Red Velvet started the recent trend in 2018 with Bad Boy
  15. Somehow the Cardi B feature doesn't surprise me. I just hope that Lisa isn't rapping on that track as well. It's not like Cardi is the best rapper, but who ever has been giving Lisa her lines (especially with HYLT and IC) should be ashamed.
  16. They're both so different that I can appreciate them separately.
  17. Sounds like everyone was over hyped for this song. Looking at everyone who was involved with this collaboration, the song is honestly what I expected. Has Selena Gomez really released high energy songs? Nope. And even though BP does, it's usually out of an uncomfortable vocal range for them. So that's a plus. Everyone's voices meshed well together and we got some cute aesthetics from it. It's honestly the perfect anthem for this low energy 2020 summer.
