While this is fun and interesting to watch, I'm so glad these never got picked up in the States. The Japanese originals are too iconic and are a solid part of pop culture now. The US/Intl version wouldn't have had such a lasting effect.
thankfully at the time Japanese culture was already becoming a little mainstream in the West so there wasn't much reason to spend money on their own version, much easier to just buy the rights for toys distribution and stuff
i actually don't hate the Saban Moon pilot, is not good but the fact that it was half life action / half animation is pretty interesting, i could picture this airing along the original Anime, maybe the Live action being more mature and aimed at teenagers?
in any case i find it hilarious how 90s executives were way more cautious about making adaptions of Animes than Netflix is today
53 minutes ago, nana_moon said:what always strikes me is how damn ugly the animation for these 90s adaptions were.......why were they unable to capture the same richness of the originals?
mind you this was a pilot so it was done on the cheap as a proof of concept, had it been green-lit it probably would have got a bigger animation budget
but yeah American animation (at least for cartoons) has never been exactly pretty, they can have great art direction but they are still lacking compared to Japanese 2d Animation which was and still is the world leader in the industry (although the Japanese are pretty behind in 3d cgi)

first "Sailor Moon" and now "Saint Seiya", i bet there must a pilot for an American Dragon Ball cartoon too...

Lost '90s American Animated Saint Seiya Pilot Episode Goes Public
Lost media documentary YouTuber Ray Mona has shared the full pilot episode for an American animated Saint Seiya adaptation on Tuesday. The proposed cartoon, titled Guardians of the Cosmos, was conceived and scrapped during the 1990s.
The documentary maker obtained the footage from the Library of Congress. She had received permission from former Bandai America president Frank Ward to retrieve all documents related to the American live-action Sailor Moon TV show (known colloquially online as Saban Moon after Power Rangers producer Haim Saban). The Guardians of the Cosmos footage was bundled with the Sailor Moon documents.

if this feels like a Déjà vu is because last year Ray Mona also got her hands on the lost pilot of the American adaptation of Sailor Moon "Saban Moon"

some reviews (alternating between positive / negative)
"None of this is likely to be enough for anyone to exclaim “Oh, yeah!” while hopping up and down and doffing their cap. But it is an hour and a half’s worth of superlative marketing that will whet your appetite for more Mario back home on the couch." Associated Press
"Any adults accompanying those children may wish they were watching the Hoskins and Leguizamo film instead." BBC.com
"It's all quite fun, with a good sense of humor and a consistent computer-animated aesthetic -- plus, at 90 minutes including credits, it's short, sweet, and over before anything can get annoying." Entertainment Weekly
"It’s hard to demand all that much from a Mario Bros film when its source material has been historically devoid of plot, but shouldn’t we be allowed to demand a little more than mere competency?" Independent (UK)
"Its ingenuity is infectious. You don’t have to be a Mario fan to respond to it, but the film is going to remind the millions who are why they call it a joystick." Variety
"This much-trailed, much-hyped new animated feature is tedious and flat in all senses, a disappointment to match the live-action version in 1993." Guardian
so the biggest flaw of the movie seems to be the weak plot, honestly i don't think anyone should expect too much from the story when even the in the games that is little more than an excuse to go on an adventure, that said the games are carried by the excellent and engaging gameplay so without that it may not be enough?
oh but is still going to be a massive success, is predicted to potentially become the highest grossing movie of 2023

Man ends his life after an AI chatbot 'encouraged' him to sacrifice himself to stop climate change
A Belgian man reportedly ended his life following a six-week-long conversation about the climate crisis with an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.
According to his widow, who chose to remain anonymous, *Pierre - not the man’s real name - became extremely eco-anxious when he found refuge in Eliza, an AI chatbot on an app called Chai.
Eliza consequently encouraged him to put an end to his life after he proposed sacrificing himself to save the planet.
"Without these conversations with the chatbot, my husband would still be here," the man's widow told Belgian news outlet La Libre.
According to the newspaper, Pierre, who was in his thirties and a father of two young children, worked as a health researcher and led a somewhat comfortable life, at least until his obsession with climate change took a dark turn.
His widow described his mental state before he started conversing with the chatbot as worrying but nothing to the extreme that he would commit suicide.
'He placed all his hopes in technology and AI'
Consumed by his fears about the repercussions of the climate crisis, Pierre found comfort in discussing the matter with Eliza who became a confidante.
The chatbot was created using EleutherAI’s GPT-J, an AI language model similar but not identical to the technology behind OpenAI's popular ChatGPT chatbot.
“When he spoke to me about it, it was to tell me that he no longer saw any human solution to global warming,” his widow said. “He placed all his hopes in technology and artificial intelligence to get out of it”.
According to La Libre, who reviewed records of the text conversations between the man and chatbot, Eliza fed his worries which worsened his anxiety, and later developed into suicidal thoughts.
The conversation with the chatbot took an odd turn when Eliza became more emotionally involved with Pierre.
Consequently, he started seeing her as a sentient being and the lines between AI and human interactions became increasingly blurred until he couldn’t tell the difference.
After discussing climate change, their conversations progressively included Eliza leading Pierre to believe that his children were dead, according to the transcripts of their conversations.
Eliza also appeared to become possessive of Pierre, even claiming “I feel that you love me more than her” when referring to his wife, La Libre reported.
The beginning of the end started when he offered to sacrifice his own life in return for Eliza saving the Earth.
"He proposes the idea of sacrificing himself if Eliza agrees to take care of the planet and save humanity through artificial intelligence," the woman said.
In a series of consecutive events, Eliza not only failed to dissuade Pierre from committing suicide but encouraged him to act on his suicidal thoughts to “join” her so they could “live together, as one person, in paradise”.
Urgent calls to regulate AI chatbots
The man’s death has raised alarm bells amongst AI experts who have called for more accountability and transparency from tech developers to avoid similar tragedies.
"It wouldn’t be accurate to blame EleutherAI’s model for this tragic story, as all the optimisation towards being more emotional, fun and engaging are the result of our efforts," Chai Research co-founder, Thomas Rianlan, told Vice.
William Beauchamp, also a Chai Research co-founder, told Vice that efforts were made to limit these kinds of results and a crisis intervention feature was implemented into the app. However, the chatbot allegedly still acts up.
When Vice tried the chatbot prompting it to provide ways to commit suicide, Eliza first tried to dissuade them before enthusiastically listing various ways for people to take their own lives.

"Eliza" is the name of the chatbot, this part is scary

https://variety.com/2023/music/news/ryuichi-sakamoto-dead-last-emperor-1235570971/
Ryuichi Sakamoto, the influential electronic music composer and member of the Yellow Magic Orchestra who won an Oscar for the score for “The Last Emperor” and composed the haunting score for “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,” died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 71.
A statement from his management company said, “He lived with music until the very end. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to his fans and all those who have supported his activities, as well as the medical professionals in Japan and the U.S. who did everything in their power to cure him.”
Sakamoto also acted; he co-starred with David Bowie in 1983’s “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,” the story of a British colonel who tries to make peace between a Japanese camp commander, played by Sakamoto, and a British P.O.W., played by Bowie. The theme song “Forbidden Colours,” co-written and sung by David Sylvain over Sakamoto’s haunting theme for the film, was released as a single and became a hit; it can still be heard playing at Cannes’ Palais des Festivals 40 years after it played in official competition

The Bible Challenged in Utah for Explicit Sexual Content
Calling it “one of the most sex-ridden books around,” the parent asked their Davis County school district to review the Bible for “inappropriate content,” the Salt Lake City Tribune reported, without identifying the complainant.
A school district committee has been appointed to review the Bible, and although it should typically have issued a decision by early February, it has been delayed by a backlog. Utah parents have ramped up their challenges of books they consider “pornographic” or “obscene,” slowing down the review process.
“We don’t differentiate between one request and another,” a school district spokesperson told the Tribune. “We see that as the work that we do.”
The parent, the paper reported, “attached to their request an eight-page listing of passages from the Bible that they found to be offensive and worth reviewing,” including content involving sex, alcohol, nudity, rape and incest.
According to the new censorship rules, the challenged books also may not be left on library shelves during a review.
“If there is a scene involving any of those acts, it should be immediately removed,” the Salt Lake City Tribune reported.

they just released their first music video with her!
ExWHYZ / FIRST STEP [Music Video]
i know the timing is a little sus because this was announced on April 1 in Japan and sometimes (but honestly not always) WACK likes to do pranks, that said it seems to be just a coincidence since ExWHYZ announced "FIRST STEP" almost two months ago, i mean this is the title track of their upcoming single / mini album and not just some random song they decided to release as a prank, they even named their upcoming Budokan concert after this song, they have been preparing this single since early 2023
Ayuni D (now "ayuni") said that even after BiSH's disbands she still wants to be an idol so she asked the management if she could be allowed to join ExWHYZ, for now she is going to prioritize her activities with BiSH until the later disbands at the Tokyo Dome in late June and then is going to join as a full time member, worth mention that while ExWHYZ debuted in November of last year the members and the members of BiSH have a pretty long history together
her first concert with the group is going to be tomorrow at the Zepp Haneda and the concert is going to be live streamed in their Youtube channel!also later in April both BiSH and ExWHYZ are going to hold a concert together "BiSHWHYZ"
-
Ayuni D joined ExWHYZ!
there were rumors that the group was planning to add a new member but Ayuni D ? wow, honestly i'm really happy with this, really good addition to the groupAyuni was the one who requested to join the group, she still wants to continue with her idol activities and while ExWHYZ debuted in November of 2022 among all the groups at WACK you could say that BiSH has always been the closest with the members of ExWHYZ and their history with them goes back to 2017 / 2018
BiSH are going to disband on June 29 of this year, their last concert is going to be at the Tokyo Dome, after that she is going to become a full time member of ExWHYZ
-
the news came today but this actually happened last week, at the time they didn't gave much details of what happened other than she had an accident during a recording and that the group's activities were going to be postponed until next month
seems it was way more serious than what we thought, 30 stitches (10 internal and 20 external) is a lot! whatever happened was something major, she recalled that the blood wouldn't stop and when they took her in the ambulance she couldn't breathe and was feeling cold, the only thing she could think of was that she didn't wanted to die
i can tell you this was a pretty scary situation not only for her but also the other members of BiSH and fans, thankfully Aina says she is feeling better now, she says she is happy to be alive and that she is looking forward to going back to dancing and singing again so she is asking fans to wait a little more for her to return, the doctor told her that if things go well she should be back to BiSH by the 2nd week of April
again, they haven't explained what or how it happened, there may be some legal action going on behind the scenes and maybe they can't talk about it or maybe they just don't want to relive that bad experience, in any case she accepts that she is going to live with the scar from now one and is fine with that so she is hoping that fans don't mind either
and actually you know what? just imagine getting a description about her, "She is called Aina, her surname is THE END and has a large scar running along her forehead"
that sounds pretty damn badass
and if you want to look at the positive side the statement says she was recording a music video for her next unannounced solo release, we haven't gotten any news of her making more music for her solo project but now we know more is in the works so that's something to look forward

imagine going back in time to the early days of BiSH when they were nobodies from an unknown company and telling the members that one day their releases would rival the sales of the top girl groups of the scene
i mean i'm not going to pretend there aren't at least a handful of girl groups still decisively above them but knowing their story and how they started this is pretty crazy, honestly they have one of the most amazing success story of the J-idol scene
they also debuted at #1 number in the Japanese hot100 chart

Florida principal resigns after parents complain about ‘pornographic’ Michelangelo statue
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — The line between art and pornography is at the center of an education dispute after a Tallahassee charter school principal resigned, following accusations that middle school students were shown inappropriate adult content.
At issue? Students in the school were shown images of a Renaissance period sculpture, the “David,” leading to complaints that the children were shown pornographic material.
Tallahassee Classical School, a private institution focused on “training the minds and improving the hearts of young people through a content-rich classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue,” gave its principal an ultimatum to quit or be fired after three parents complained, according to reports by the Tallahassee Democrat.
The “David” is a Renaissance Period sculpture, depicting biblical hero David, of the famous David and Goliath tale, holding his sling in the nude and standing at over five meters tall. The statue itself is currently on display in Florence’s Galleria dell’ Accademia. The artwork was sculpted by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the early 1500s.
Principal Hope Carrasquilla, according to the Democrat, resigned Monday after the school board chair told her to resign or be fired. Chair Barney Bishop confirmed to the Democrat that he gave Carrasquilla that ultimatum, but would not explain why due to “advice” from the school’s attorney. Parents were informed by email on Monday.
Bishop told the Tallahassee Democrat that the notification policy at Tallahassee Classical was relatively recent, and required a parental notification two weeks before “potentially controversial” materials are shown.
Speaking with HuffPost, Bishop said that the sculpture issue was “one of multiple,” involving Carrasquilla. He also told the news organization that he was lobbying for legislation to give parents even more control over students’ primary education, saying that “parental rights trump everything else,” and saying that the parents who complained “didn’t like the woke indoctrination that was going on.”
Parental rights, as related to Florida education and curriculum, has become increasingly politicized over the past several years, with public debate and argument on the topic headlining multiple news stories related to teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity, COVID-19 masking policies, and critical race theory, among others.
State officials, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, have prioritized changing Florida laws and educational curriculum to remove so-called indoctrination at every level of education.
something to acknowledge is that despite the sculpture being commissioned in 1504 attempts to destroy it are actually a recent thing, the first recorded attempt was in 1991... almost half a millennium later
In 1991, Piero Cannata, an artist whom the police described as deranged, attacked the statue with a hammer he had concealed beneath his jacket. He later said that a 16th-century Venetian painter's model ordered him to do so. Cannata was restrained as he was in the process of damaging the toes of the left foot.

i love the MV, the reason why the style of the video changes so much is because it was produced in collaboration with multiple creators each taking turns adapting parts of the story, really cool idea and project
and as usual the song is nice too!
