EXO Talks 'Growl' and Global Success in Video Interview (Exclusive)

The 12-member boy band react to topping the charts in the U.S. and South Korea backstage at KCON 2013.

With less than a year and a half since their spring 2012 debut, 12-member K-pop boy band EXO has earned accolades most acts only find several years into their careers.

When Billboard talked with the boys at KCON 2013, their

was smashing the K-Pop Hot 100. The track peaked at No. 3 earlier this month and sits at No. 6 this week with more than a month in the Top 10. Its accompanying LP, "The 1st Album 'XOXO'," debuted at No. 1 on the World Albums chart along with a placement on the Heatseekers Albumschart -- meaning, a Billboard 200 entry wasn't far off. Plus, in its native South Korea, EXO has nabbed
; an accomplishment that typically comes after years of aggregating a strong fanbase.

Outfitted like the popular kids at a fancy prep school, EXO talked to Billboard about its accomplishments so far and gave a little more insight into how the group works. Check out the members (speaking in English and Korean) in Billboard's exclusive video interview.

Hmm.. well.. they do have mellow/slow songs. ie. don't go, baby, peter pan etc.  I don't know if I would like them to do exactly this type of song cuz personally I think it's kind of plain?  Exo's mellow songs are more eccentric.  More punch to it.  Growl was pretty mellow wasn't it?  But with a lot of swag  :)

    Yeah Growl is mellow.

but I would like a really mellow swagless song too...lol

  2. GD fans don't care. They're sick of his solo albums being used to promote newbies. They thought 2NE1 would be the worst of it, but it's still going on so YG has pretty much burned the bridge on converting GD's fans into YG fans. They won't influence the vote much.

Are you anticipating this new group?

Which group do you like more...?

I know you are Korean so its interesting to see your opinion....

  3. I think the timing makes sense. He just finished his musical and everyone else in Cube's come back this year. There's rumors that Hyuna might have a comeback but he promoted at the same time as her last year too.

I had this theory that Cube might redebut him in a group like they did with Kikwang and Beast but I can't imagine they debut another boy group anytime soon.

I think his debut song was Great...its just that he needs some buzz about him....

IDK how cube can make more Buzz for him...

    Better be coming back soon.

  5. It's not just dancing either. It's the transparency of their insecurities that Team A showed in their performance. Even though they were by far superior than Team B with their vocals, you could clearly see that they weren't 100% focused on the performance and enjoying it. They were also thinking about if they were going to get eliminated, and they were worried about the evaluation, which was displayed on their faces. And considering how the song they chose was supposed to be a happy/uplifting song, the fact that they had an unsettling/worriesome aura around them made people who watched the performance not feel the joy that's supposed to be felt from singing the song. If they don't fix that during this time, it'll be harder to do happy/exciting songs for them in the future, especially if they keep over-stressing themselves over it.

Team B on the other hand, while their vocal qualities were not on par with Team A's, they exuded confidence and a party-like aura, which is exactly what the audience should feel. They should feel excited and have their heart pumping to get up and dance.

The public enjoys vocals more, true, but vocals will also only take you so far. Without any confidence or stage charisma, they might as well just sing behind a screen rather than perform. Other than singing, an artist should know how to convey the correct emotions of the song they're singing to the audience. Sometimes, that's even more important than vocal quality.

Yeah you're right. I guess I didn't pick up on team A's lack of conviction and was focusing on their vocals....

maybe being there physically in front of team A made it easier for those people at YGE to make their decisions...

  6. Like what YG and Tablo said: Team B's performance gives off a "i'm doing well" and "i have nothing to lose" vibe, While Team A gives off a "i want to do well" and "i'm putting something on libe" vibe. Lbr Team B's perf is so fun to watch although Team A did better vocal wise ^^

The difference came down to who owned the stage IMO.

If you remember, Tablo said that Team A is better in singing and Team B is better in dancing after he saw them practice. He originally was rooting for A but he changed to B because they simply enjoyed their stage more. I think each person in that evaluation may be looking for something different from the teams and B appealed to more ppl there. I'm not really rooting for a specific team but I enjoyed B's overall performance even if they are lacking in certain areas.

You guys are saying the same thing. I see your point.....

I just don't want team A to focus too much on dancing just because that's what the people at YG like...maybe the public will enjoy vocals more you know???

but they should improve their confidence..

I really can't wait to see who the public votes for...

  7. Simple. Team B killed it with their dancing and did a decent job in singing and performed extremely well in the rapping segments.

They also performed like it was their stage, not an audition.

I don't know maybe if I was sitting right there in front of them and looking at them perform I would have felt the effect....

But looking at it through video I think Team A's rapping was good enough and their singing was through the roof at least for trainees!!!

  8. I love team B you know.

    Jinhwan is awesome......

    BUT HOW DID THEY WIN!??????

This just proves to me people at YG like personality more than singing....

I think Lee Hi picked team A because their vocals were so pretty and she can appreciate that. But almost everyone else saw team b's Swag and was so taken with it...

I guess that's the difference between me and YG's interest...
