  1. The Ming dynasty was founded in 1368.

Its capital was set at Nanking.

The Castle of Nanking was built, and Liu Ji, better known as his nickname Liu Bowen, was someone who was very pivotal for founding the dynasty.

He was also known as a top class astrologer, and he prophesied that the Walls of Nanking will only be overcome by a swallow ('Yan' in Chinese).

And, lo and behold, on 1402 Zhu Di, a son of the founder of the dynasty, conquered Nanking , deposing his nephew. His title was ... the Prince of Yan. (Yan is an old name for Peking. Not surprisingly, Zhu Di moved the capital back to there.

The Swallow (Yan) is still considered to be a symbol of Beijing(Peking), as seen in this olympic mascot.

    spacer.png

Liu Bowen was correct  - a swallow, the Prince of Yan(swallow), did scale the walls of Nanking.

    ======

SNSD was the most perfect group of all time.

    It had no rivals.

Even boy groups had to shy away against them, the only female act which managed to do so.

It was predicted that no groups will ever overcome SNSD.

    And the prediction was correct.

However, whoever made that prediction unfortunately did not see that there would be a soloist back in Korean Pop again.

There was only one soloist remaining in Korean Pop after 2010

    But one was enough

and the One Single Soloist in Korean Pop still standing

    overcame SNSD.

I had pointed out she blocking other Kpop singers for all these years, and although she has ceased fighting Kpop she is like a quiet volcano who can always explode to throw the entire Kpop world under a turmoil again

You always have some good observations about the kpop world, but I still don't understand what is the point of doing these essays for so long.

  3. The Woman in the Attic was a common theme during the 19th century Gothic literature.

Daphne du Maurier, as late as 1930s, used it as a theme in her sole masterpiece Rebecca, which became an Alfred Hitchcock classic Rebecca.

Every family has some kind of secrets which they want to hide but sometime the secret manifests itself.

In KPop, there is a Strange Creature who was not that well known to international KPop fans.

It is not exactly correct that the Strange Creature was well hidden in some kind of sanctuary since she had hosted Inkigayo and was also involved in something which was seen by every Kpop fan back then , but still since she did not sing songs palatable to the international fans, she was kinda hidden.

International fans had a hard time understanding that while acts like Big Bang, SNSD, Super Junior, Exo and BTS were popular internationally, the Strange Creature, while not singing a single KPop song, still lurked around in Korean Pop frustrating their faves.

Matters took to a head when in 2017 it was revealed that the Koreans considered the Strange Creature to be more popular than BTS , a major coup.

While not exactly hidden her style of songs led to i-fans ignoring her  till she sang a song named  after a Swedish tomboy.

BTS sailed past the Strange Creature and conquered the world, but because of an accident of history (BTS chose to not release a regular album this year),

The Strange Creature, whose identity is now known to most KPop fans, might steal the most popular singer of Korea's position this year!

  4. 1. Me Gustas Tu

Probably the most enduring song GF ever produced

    2 . Rough

When it was around GF was superior to Twice

    3. Time for Moonlight

Basically its last major song. I consider it to be GF's swan song.

  5. KPop in its early years often used disco melodies in the 1970s.

Many of them were popular they made the song of the year title

(When I selected the songs of the year, I deliberately excluded songs which were popular among the over 40 K-O-R-E-A-N-S, whose opinion do not matter as far as the i fans are concerned.)

I omit 2017 since it is the most old fashioned song of all. Who would have thought that someone would be singing something which would actually have been sung 50 years ago? So it is NOT in the above selection.

    2007 Tell Me

    2008 Nobody

    2009 Gee

    2010 Hoot

    2011 Roly Poly

    2012 Gangnam Style

    2013 Growl

    2014 Some

    2015 Bang Bang Bang

    2016 Cheer Up

    2018 Love Scenario

    2019 Boy with Luv

    2020 Dynamite.

  6. aespa's Savage will be released in October.

Meanwhile, a certain singer who contributed nothing to KPop in her first 10 years of career is rumored to release a ballad album.

Initially it was speculated to be Sep 18, which is when she debuted, but since the BTS-Coldplay collabo next week will steal all the attention, the singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her first 10 years might release her Flower Bookmarks III album in October instead.

It is speculated that Savage will sell around 150-200K copies.

However, KPop sales went up, and the last album of the singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her first 10 years sold about 34,000 copies (two styles).

I am afraid that if aespa's sales are lower than the sales of Flower Bookmarks III by the singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her first 10 years, the singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her  first 10 years would have done the same thing what Cho Yongpil did to Psy back in 2013 to aespa.

The singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her first 10 years beat one SM idol after another with a ridiculous ease despite of the inconvenient fact that her sales always lagged against the array of the SM idols who fought her, and if she releases her Flower Bookmarks III it will probably sell north of 200,000 copies, beating aespa.

Whether the singer who contributed nothing to Kpop in her first 10 years might actually release Flower Bookmark III in October remains to be seen, but when she posts a pic of her recording studio (owned by her , of course), it always means she is going to release something.

    What do you think?

possibly. tho according to the article hybe confirmed again that theY didn't seak out a deal.

    lol bts(?) ...SJLLSLFJFKDLS

That's what the companies say for a failed deal since the person doing the negotiation loses face.

Lim Youngwoong is fairly big in Korea, and if he did join Hybe a BTS member would probably have been there to greet him.

Korea's music indusrty isn't self-suffiecent complety yet, which is why it relies on exporting to other industries (West, China, Japan, etc.) to make more money. Until they're able to change that, local stardom will always be less profitable then global stardom overall....However local stardom do provide easier access to local public recognition and legacy.

I said 'rumored', and since the deal fell through Hybe is denying

If it went through, we would have seen a pic of Lim Youngwoong shaking hands with Mr. Bang and a BTS member.

  9. Hybe is at least 100 times bigger than Edam.

Even we add all of Kakao Entertainment, the chief singer of Edam is the biggest star in Kakao Entertainment, and arguably Kakao itself as seen in this ad

Kakao launches a webtoon (which is big in Korea) service and it only shows Lee Jieun's face.

Since Lee Jieun basically is the face of the entire Kakao company.

    ===

Hybe is rumored to try to buy out Mulgogi Music (Mulgogi means 'fish' in Korean), whose sole artist is  the trottist Lim Youngwoong, for about $27 million.

However, the owner of Mulgogi, someone who watched over Lim Youngwoong from when he was a nobody, decided against it since he expected to earn more than that amount by promoting Lim Youngwoong. Perhaps he might have remembered what happened to Source Music as well.

The very fact that Hybe tried to acquire the trottist shows it is aware that although Hybe has conquered the world, it still has little local presence, so since Lim Youngwoong is the only person in Korea who could counter IU domestically, Hybe tried to acquire him.

A local ruler does not fear a king, a dictator or the Emperor of the World. No matter how powerful the adversary is, he , or in this case she, is supreme in her turf. With all these arrangements going on for years, she knows eventually the ruler will go away while she and her clan will still be ruling the town.

So, no matter how successful Hybe will become, it will never really be able to eliminate Edam since Edam will retain local support , no matter what.

You made a few points ngl. It's true that i-fans don't hype Brave Girls that much (but then again, I don't remember Gfriend being so hyped up by i-fans during Me gustas tu/Rough either). Also, even koreans themselves don't seem to have paid that much attention to their summer comeback. It charted well but that's it, it wasn't a huge hit like Rollin or anything.

It's still early to tell but it looks like it's gonna be another Momoland situation of having a smash hit followed by a couple of decently popular songs and then being kinda forgotten, rather than EXID/Gfriend's cases were they kept their upper tier status for a few years.

GFriend was helped by the famous falling incident which was seen in a lot of places which led expectation to rise. It helped also that the Huang An shit happened just before GF's  new release, which led Koreans to support GF which had no foreigners. GF never really catered to the i-fans since it was, and ended as, a domestic act.

BGs new songs are weak. Which is why they flopped. BG will fade away. ExiD had Hani, and GF tried to push Eunha. BG had no focus (although Yujung was the focus initially) which might be why it might fade faster.

Momoland's company never really was able to decide whom to promote, Nancy, Yeonwoo (who has left) or Joo-E, which is why it faded.

  11. Whether they have success in the future or not is not the focus of this post.

When EXID and GFriend had their heydays, they were kind of accepted by the Kpop singers and the communities. EXID remained in the circle until the end of 2016, and GFriend remained in the first tier to the end.

However, it appears few singers tried to befriend Brave Girls, other than Ohmygirl (which had a looong period of obscurity),

(Laboum does not count since it was, and is, in the fringes of Kpop)

and few of them tried to cover Rollin.

Unlike EXID, who was accepted into the top tier at once, or GFriend, which battled Twice and the top acts, Brave Girls was simply ignored by the KPop community in general.

KPop has grown too big for an upstart to pierce, and unlike the old days, KPop fans have become more  discerning.

A big transformation has taken place - whatever is in hot in Korea does not influence the i-fans too much, and acts which emphasize activities in Korea won't really be noticed by the i-fans any more. With the international travel restrictions having no signs of weakening, that will only help existing acts from major companies even more.

  12. When you come home, inherited from your ancestors, and see a youngish woman who says she is your grand-aunt, and says she is entitled to half of the ancestral property?

You sue her, and she countersues you, and she produces a document which says your great-grandfather, who had disappeared long ago, had adopted this woman so she is legally your grand-aunt, although she has nothing to do with the family or family property whatsoever, and she should be treated as a grandparent although she is barely older than you.

That is what the old codgers did to Kpop by creating a

However, you meet your old friend, whom you have not seen for many years.

She promises to get rid of the grand aunt who demands respect and submission because she is legally a senior person.

Your friend, who is an athlete, fight the grand aunt, who is no walkover and manages to defeat your friend.

However the 'grand aunt' is exhausted after the fight, and you kick her out of the house.

    ======

Lee Jieun freeloaded in the Empire of Kpop for 11 long years.

Quite a few acts were born, and died, during this long period.

IU lorded over KPop despite of contributing almost nothing to it,and insisted upon her Seniority over virtually all existent major Kpop acts.

However, this year she finally did something for KPop by releasing a couple KPop minded songs.

Unfortunately, the rise of Brave Girls' Rollin took all of the luster.

IU's songs are known for their longevity, and because BG's new songs were weaker there were no synergy between Rollin and their new releases.

That led IU to finally claim the yearly #1 at Melon.

However I have to say that while IU was dealing with bG, the newer acts began to be established and build a new base.

It seems Brave Girls will enjoy its brief fame and ride into sunset, but IU's fight against it appears to be pyrrhic (a victory more trouble than worth it), and her iron grip on the progress of Kpop appears to have been very seriously weakened.
