omg yass. I was never gifted musically before. But when I was pushed to play piano, my music teacher whom taught Lea Salonga told me I was better than her. Well that was during my prime. I went to being assessed with grade 8 pieces (OMG I LOVE SONATINA) within 4 to 5 years with just lessons once a week. But because of my busy nature and schedule I was not able to develop and maintain that skill and ended up being a very successful pianist. She even offered me direct admission into the conservatorium of Sydney. (I can still read notes okayly). Same was with dance. My dance group auditioned with schools all over the country to perform at the Sydney opera house (we were able to perform, and I was the main role) and I was able to splits but now I can't free style to save my life (I can still do choreo well though)
omg u dance? me too :D
i never learned though... i just learn everything by watching videos which sucks LOL

Taemin > Jonghyun > Onew >>> Key in terms of the C5.. I'm impressed by Key being his voice type and hitting that...
You said "Whatever, Ariana <3" like....Ik it was in a friendly manner but like then I don't get why we replied to it at all either... I'm not pressed Anthony, don't use that word with me. I'm just saying we replied and I love her too, but I made my point.. It just made it sound like I wasted my breath.. anyway.. moving on..
oh. LOL sorry for the misunderstanding then! I always appreciate your opinion and what you have to say. I just didn't feel like quoting the 5+ people that made critiques about Ariana so I just made a quick general statement instead. Thank you for always responding to me
oh and btw i didnt thumbs down your reply. idk who did that LOL D:edit: OMG THERES AN EXO VOCAL BATTLE OUT!?
YESSS IM SO WATCHING THIS BRB
-
They made key hit a C5? I didn't notice his, only the other 3...idk I think Taemin did well on high notes and Jonghyun too.. Onews C5 improved but it's still not good
Please don't say whatever, you've made a point and we've addressed it, address it back maturely or don't bring it in at all..
yes, he snatches a C5 @ around 3:50.
And what are you talking about... can you please stop extrapolating my words...? I didn't mean to say "whatever" ignorantly or as a way to throw shade or anything, it was just said casually. In other words, I acknowledge what each one of you thinks about her and I've moved on. It doesn't make me love her less. That's what my "whatever" meant.... I don't know why you're so pressed. ._.
-
Whatever, ariana <3
In other news, did you guys see SHINee's Everybody yet?
Everyone with the exception of Minho sustained C5's at the end. I think Taemin/Jonghyun's were the best, then Onew's, then Key's :x I'm excited to see this live, but SHINee usually gets away with prerecorded vocals nowadays. What do you guys think?
-
I know most of you still don't like Ariana and think she's mediocre but you have to give her props for bringing some vocal creativity into her live performances... she isn't near close to Sohyang, but she sings in Sohyang's range.... here she continuously blasts out F5s, peaks at F6 as usual, but then instead of finishing in head voice as usual, belts a G#5. she probably has incorrect technique but she isnt by any means a bad singer! ^^
-
his nose-tip was higher, idk maybe it's just the angle in the newer gif

Actually I don't mind him getting minor surgery/injections (I'm sure he got some before debuting), but... I just... I still really don't know how I feel if he really did that (after debut)

are you looking at the same pictures im looking at?
because i see no difference ._.

I'm not qualified to answer but I will do it anyway. From what I remember, they said about 2/3 weeks ago
- She has abused her voice and there has been some damage to it.
- She's not that great either.
- they dislike how she is being called the next MC

I'm pretty sure I saw on a vocal blog that her chest notes lack resonance. Also Ariana said she doesn't really have good control of whistle register on her Youtube channel.
awks i love her lol.

I actually thought she was quite resonant most of the time D:

what do you guys think of ariana grande?

ahhhh omahhhgahhhhh. Did you just ask me to duet with you?
lol I'm worse than you. But I need to get a mic cos all I have is a crappy recorder on my phone. Just let me have a few lessons from ahmin. Plus I need a job. Also I liked your cover. Your C#4 didn't sound like you were struggling with it compared with your other notes. For some reason I think it didn't sound as nasal as your other notes as well. It didn't sound open throat either. I also can't sing inside the house when someone is around because my family is always sleeping or tell me that I should be studying instead. So I'll find time.
LOL okay :D
what. no that cover was so pitchy tho, being nervous and all, the second time around I sang it was far better.
wow dueting without me. Whatever nigguhs whatever lol
oh oops i thought youd say no because im too basic of a vocalist
LOL

but your extremes are wider than mine. Like you've hit a 6th octave note and an 1st octave note. That's like 5 octaves. my lowest extreme is an F2 and it takes serious practice/warm up just to hit that nite so I don't count it. So lowest extreme to highest extreme is 3 octaves and 6 tones. Where as my only usable range is like 2 notes smaller. The highest belt I practice is A4 but I really want to reach B4/C4 but I have reached Bb4 once. But I'm just trying to get consistent and healthy with A4
also yess. Ahmin's cover was >>>>>
so are we dueting or 8)
-
Is that you in your dp? You like like him

Anyways can you show me how 1st octave notes sound like? :3
yes it is lol and thanks? xD
uhhh I really only have 1-2 first octave notes and theyre in vocal fry, so... :/
i mean i have a link, but theyre pretty scary LOL
that makes much more sense. So your actual musical vocal range is C2-D5. You're definitely a baritone. I'm about F#2/G2-C#6 (I've hit a D6 for like 5 seconds tho) You must have nice vocal range especially in the high range. Tbh head, voice gets me higher than falsetto. My falsetto stops at E5 for some strange reason.
yes! sorry...
anyways yes im most comfortable from C2-D5
or F#4 is the highest i belt to be precise, sorry about that confusion...as u can see from this cover, C#4 is already a challenge for me LOL
excuse my nasalness... for some reason i recorded this lying flat on my stomach ._.
https://app.box.com/s/r3rqd6gpzcyrw2kscihm
your range is pretty wide!!!
my falsetto is basically broken now because i never use it anymore :D
u said belting! lol awk that makes so much more sense lol
lol sorry thats not what i meant!
you know how much i trip about octaves...
the last thing id ever want to be is fake lol
AND YOUR IF COVER WAS >>>>>>>>>

I can't belt past Bb4. I can head easily into G5 tho and I've sustained a head C6 once before but I can heady mix into E5. You must have improved a lot then. I don't practice often. Only when no one is home which is rare in a week. You went from a limit of an F#4 belt into C5. Congrats id like to hear it. Is your 1st octave notes musically useful tho? By projecting do you mean belting/mixing?
i meant C5 in head voice!!!!
yeap
It was nasal and her mouth was a bit too closed, it blocked the sound....she sounded closed, the vibrato was slightly too fast to me
okay lemme stop you right there. He has never belted a C5, nor E5, I don't know where you're getting that from.. and C1?
LOL sorry I meant C2.
and I meant C5 in head voice, lol.

Today I finally learned the true meaning of breath support and consistency. I tried to make a cover of shinee's sleepless night but I could do everything except pulling at awesome A4 without straining too much. I did warm UPS and tried it but I was still pulling my larynx way to high and straining too much. I realized I needed to be hydrated as well so I took a glass of leukwarm water and I tried to do the note carefully, and I carefully tried to manage my breathing rather than just taking a huge gasp of air before pulling it off. I tried to scream it with my diaphragm but it wasn't rough as a scream as I expected. As I did it in my bathroom my note felt healthy as I wasn't tightening my chords or trying to pull my larynx. I could actually feel by diaphragm working together with my vocal chords and it sounded and felt supported. It sounded better than any G4 I've ever done and I think it was a fluke decent A4 It wasn't nasal at all and felt and sounded open (just a lifted soft palate). As I was preparing for the cover one last time I could not reproduce that nice A4 I just did. If an singer cant reproduce notes like that just as I couldn't, it shows how less capable a vocalist he/she is. So I give up.
But I'll make that cover once I can pull that acceptable and supported A4 more often.
LOL I don't think we have the same range anymore

I already have to put in some energy into properly projecting a C5, whereas that note for you is around E5 I'd assume.
My belted E5 is like your belted G5 too lol. But I don't really know how to... "mix"...? Or whatever that's called ._.
I only ever reached C#6 in a squeak of a falsetto... and I never use falsetto anymore so its basically out of my singing range LOL
Right now what I sing with is just C1-D5 ^^ I think you're a tenor?

Ah ok, I see what you're saying. You pretty much described exactly how I feel whenever I watch one of her performances.
Which sites/videos do you personally use? Also, where do you think I should start, I'm guessing breathing but what else. I think I'll pass on posting any videos of me singing, for now, to spare everyone's ears.
I don't use any sites or videos lol but I know EricArceneaux has a lot of great tutorials on YouTube!
All I do is listen to music and watch performances lol :3
Rather than just doing technical practice, I think it would be more beneficial if you pick a song that you like and practice it based on the techniques that you've gathered (from sites or videos, or just from watching other good singers sing, like I did ^^). When you have enough confidence, perhaps you could post it here (or PM someone in this thread) and get a critique. From that critique, you would be able to fix what you did incorrectly and enhance what you did do correctly, and grow from it! When you feel like you've exhausted a song and made progress, then choose another song and work on that~
Well, that's the process that SM artists pretty much use (and they get to perform their practiced songs on radio or during special stages), in addition to regular vocal exercises and practices that they do with their vocal coaches.
If you're looking for guidance in this thread, then I can be of casual help, but I'm also still learning and I'm not educated in vocal pedagogy like some of the people in here are lol. Just stick around the thread and you'll get better day by day!

Hey, used to read the akp/h8 vocals threads now and then but never decided to make an account on any of the forums until now~ (I really hope this wasn't a bad decision). I have a pretty basic understanding of vocals but thats it really. Just had a few questions that have been on my mind.
How would you guys go about learning how to sing in terms of exercises and practice routines if you don't have access to a vocal coach? I'm seriously considering putting some time in developing my voice but my only resources are myself, a microphone, and maybe a piano.
What separates the top tier vocalists from the rest? Like what separates very good vocalists like Ock Joohyun or NaUl from some of the best of all time like Whitney.
Is there a way to develop absolute pitch? if so, what's the best way to. I'm pretty terrible at naming notes in a performance.
If you don't have a vocal coach like me, then just learn from credible online sources, or have one of the vocal pros in this thread be your coach XD (I'm serious).
And hm.... Whitney was almost always resonant in her good days, and her technique was close to flawless from her debut all the way up to the mid 1990's. But beyond just good technique and a beautiful tone, she had a gift of never singing a song the same way twice. Her melismatic singing and her creativity always added a new depth to a song that you would never have imagined. It was all natural - it's not like she planned different arrangements in advance! The music flowed through her and out of her mouth. In my opinion there's a quality in her voice that demands your attention, and makes you feel what she's saying. Whether you're comparing technique, emotion (again subjective), creativity, or whatever, Whitney is better than Ock Joohyun in each category, again, PRE-DRUG ABUSE!
Here's an example ^^
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C0PiKdJ-n4
And absolute pitch? You mean "perfect pitch", right? When you can just tell what a note is just by hearing it?
It's not something you can develop, because people are just born with that gift.
You can however, get very good at approximating notes by practicing relative pitch, which is what you've been doing if you've been playing piano, for example (when you do interval tests, cadence identification, etc). If you're unsure about it like me, then you can always match the same note to a piano to help ^^

Oh and btw... can any of you guys give an analysis of Celine in this performance?
This is already a rare performance in the first place, but its also one of the very few times (if not the only time) that shes sung "Thats the Way it is" LIVE, and in
ORIGINAL KEYNVM WTF SHE SANG THE SONG RAISED ONE KEY O____O WHATTTT LOL usually she hits E5's at the end but here she was singing F5's... interesting.... You can tell it's live because she's a little pitchy throughout the performance and she messed up the lyrics during the bridge LOL. I'm just curious to know whether or not her belts were good ._. Thanks! -
What is this called @ 0:28? She does this weird bird call type thing with her voice
Personally I don't consider it a run since the notes weren't connected by the same breath :O
She was just making lots of really fast, short breaths while doing a glissando downwards... I THINK XD

I'm sure it is SHINee>DBSK, because SHINee has both TaeMin and JongHyun, TaeMin is like Decent and JongHyun like Ok or Decent, TaeMin is probs a little less than Junsu(not by much though), JongHyun is better than JaeJoong, Onew is better than Changmin(I'm pretty sure) Key is Key, I think he is pretty thsn YunHo..and y'know Minho...lol So yeah. SHINee>DBSK. Tbqh, I think DBSK Yoochun is worse than Suju's worse, considering how someone told me SNSD's dance line>>YooChun. And y'know KRY>Junsu>JaeJoong, but then SuJu kind of just flutters, I don't know how the other vocalist would rank compared to the others, there's just TOO many of them, it's REALLY hard to compare them fairly. The other vocalist would SungMin and Donghae(?),I know they are both less than Jessica,SeoHyun,Onew...but I don't really know WHERE they are I think Sungmin is better than Sunny ? Donghae is less than her ?, and apparently Zhou Mi is above Jessca,SeoHyun,Onew...sooo. Super juinor is hard to rank amongst the other groups.
Yoochun and Minho kind of negate each other so its okay ^^
If you look at the other 4 remaining, then DBSK wins by a bit imo.
I think its DBSK, CSJH, SHINee, SNSD (3/9=1/3, aka TaengSicSeo), Super Junior (3/15=1/5, aka KRY), EXO, f(x). ^^
-
Who's the best overall group vocally out of SM? Between DBSK (all five), Suju, SHINee, EXO K, and EXO M?
Including every single member, I'm pretty sure its DBSK>SHINee>SuperJunior>EXO, simply because Super Junior has so many members that don't care about their vocals lol.
Yunho, who is/was the least vocally competent out of the 5 for example, is worlds above the least competent vocalist in the other groups.
Individually Super Junior has better singers, but if we're talking about (13+2) members altogether, then it has to be DBSK and SHINee before them.
EXO is just... like I love them the most, but... they have the lowest average of vocal talent I'd say out of any SM group other than f(x) (where only Luna sings, with a little bit of Krystal).
-
Um...no..this is how you do an E5
@:3:44
um yes because Lina's E5 still slayed

Not that Sohyang's didn't, but it's not like Lina's is any less good in light of Sohyang's.

My girl Lina showing everyone how its done @ 3:50

A sub vocalist doesn't always have a bad voice.
ya but their vocals are expected to be worse than main vocalists ^^
it was -not- easy for sooyoung to stand and sing on a singing show, in front of ryeowook and luna, two main vocalsts that are known for their awesome singing.
sooyoung has always been put down for her singing skills by netizens and the general public, and never had any significant lines in snsd songs.
for her to sing with so much confidence and poise and actually sing decently okay made me so proud of her.
-
i didnt see this clip yet, SOOYOUNG IMPROVED SO MUCH!
... of course she still had problems but come on now.... shes dancer/body visual... for a sub vocalist this was good 8)
-
Your voice is lovely because it's kinda hauntingly deep at times LOL Your stability needs work, your pitch isn't very centered and you don't sound exactly shaky, it just isn't fluid enough. I don't know this song at all lol Also the reverb/echo present in the song takes a bit away from the vocals at times... You're just not always in pitch, many times u r under pitch and shaky and it's not in a range that's challenge, but the tonality isn't that present in your middle-upper range. Also your jumps from your lower to upper range aren't exactly smooth.. LOL AM I TOO BITCHY.
Be sensitive of the pitches should be you main concern. I will assume you have some scale training, so I will not touch on that. I will use a lot of descriptive term. I will use softage a lot. I will only go through a small portion of it.
"When the cold wind is calming?? and the sky clear and bright" - "When the Cold wind" you need to go bit a little bit lower. Imagine an eagle is flying low you need to sing low. If you get the first note right, that is "Sol", when you going to sing "is calming??", So- La -Do, you should able to get it right.
"And the sky clear and bright" - "And the sky" is "Me-Re-Do" coming down. "Clear and bright" is "Do-Sol-Sol". You need to go higher on "So", so that it got the feeling of bright what you hit the word. "Mi-Re-Do " should be sing clearly so that the "Do-So-So" is easier to do later.
"Is the mountain.... leave?? me out into the light" - "Is the mountain" - "La-So-La-So". The La should be higher so that it will not affect your Sol. It is describing the mountain so it is naturally you sing higher.
I think overall is your feel toward the notes that you should take care of. It is feeling of the "steps" of the notes that help you to propagate the song better, and you will understand why the song is written this way.
For exercise, beside your scales. You should Do-Re-Mi,Re-Mi-Fa,Me-Fa-Sol, Fa-So-La, La-Ti-Do, Ti-Do-Re and going down the notes. In addition, interval is important too like Do-Do, Do-Re,Do-Mi....etc
Thank you! I'll work hard ^^
and no kongwee I've never been trained so this is my training, lol
oh and btw i didnt thumbs down your reply. idk who did that LOL D:

omg I feel you.
Every time I sing guy songs I have to lower the key... lol. For girl songs I just straight up sing it an octave lower XDDD
I thought you were discovering higher notes in your range though?
