Her chest voice is nice, but I wouldn't place her in P. Yes she sings nice and easy on C5/C#5 with a nice sound above compared with some other vocalists even if she doesn't support, but in general her mix voice lacks a stronger chest presence and more projection. Personally, I've heard stronger notes B4-C#5 from Solji and Solar. Her nice hv and low register are nice and a booster no doubt, but when her mix is lacking presence, I wouldn't place her in P. AA-P is potential but for now I still think higher AA is more probable.

Even though Wendy is quite bright and light, I've still heard stronger support with more presence throughout her mix from memory.

oh I wasn't thinking in terms of that framework xD I just meant that I think she's around Wendy's level by virtue of her head voice and lower register. I do agree that Liyin's mixed voice is lacking projection compared to her peers - what's interesting is, from 2006-2012, she was extremely chesty, but from 2013 onward, she completely changed her approach and her mix became very head-dominant (ie what it still is today).

Examples of her more chesty belts include the C#5 I gave a timestamp for from my previous post with that compilation of her runs, and another one I can think of off the top of my head is her D5 from O Holy Night (recorded in 2007), @3:33

    from 2010, a performance of "Why" in the Thailand. C#5 @0:44, 0:56. C#5-E5-C#5 @2:07. E5-C#5 @2:47. F#5 @3:00.

    versus the same moments from this performance of "Why" in 2013 at SMTOWN: C#5 @0:42, @0:55. C#5-E5-C#5 @2:05. E5 @2:40, @2:45. F#5 @3:00. She completely changed!

Even though she usually sings very light these days above B4, she still is capable of pulling chest voice up to her mid belts, like this C#5 for example @3:25

Unfortunately, SM BARELY promoted her while she was with the company, and since she left, she's more or less retired from the entertainment industry although she sometimes uploads covers or does the odd performance/OST.

  2. also sorry for the spam, but I can't go without leaving this here:

@6:09 she sings live (with only piano accompaniment) "On the Tibetan Plateau" for the MCs. this is a very hard song to sing (not many chinese singers would attempt this) as you constantly need to navigate between mixed voice and head voice, and the runs are quite difficult as i think theyre on the pentatonic scale. she uses a lighter approach for most it, but she does add some more power into some of the C5 belts. she also has a Bb5 head voice moment at the end.

anyways, i just think she's really great and technique aside, her musicality is probably one the most creative of the kpop/cpop singers that have been discussed in this thread. she's originally from SM, as you pointed out before. if i had to place her, i would say she's around wendy's level. wendy is definitely more consistent between C5-D5, but i think liyin's low register is stronger, and they both have developed head voices.

I love her singing! Personally from the limited videos I've seen so far, I'd say she's in the higher AA, her hv is the strongest in the category for sure and her low notes are nice. But, her mixing is a bit heady and can be thinner sometimes. She seems to be practicing nicely. Are there any recent videos?

I love her too! I'm so glad that someone else here is willing to talk about her xD She's not very active anymore, but she still uploads singing covers sometimes, or has the odd activity.

This was one of her recently released OSTs, but most of it is in her middle register.

from @0:17 until the chorus, she hits F3 I think 6 times throughout the first verse. I'm not the best person to ask here for technique, so I'd appreciate some additional feedback from others - but she maintains good tonality on her F3s and her larynx sounds neutral to me on most of them. IMO they're pretty nice.

She also has 2 C5s @0:54 and @1:12, which sound balanced to me and easy for her.

ill try to find more moments later ^__^

  4. encore from fancam, so you can hear the girls' raw vocals live, without any editing or processing.

honestly, they really shut their haters up. i didnt expect winter and ningning to belt everything at the end and thought they might have done a falsetto or head voice instead, but they really did belt it all out... karina wasnt bad on her parts either.

IM SO PROUD OF THEM ❤️

Anybody follow Zhang Li Yin here?

I only found out about her recently and I'm supriz she rarely gets mentions considering she was in SM Ent until a few years befor and sounds AA to me.

    2:20 to end

I hear quite nice support up to C5 but her mix is a bit too heady for me, D5 is questionable for me (I think the heavy editing and reverb makes it sound better than it was) and she definitely has nothing above that.

6:04 seems to have A3 in low notes

    7:36 nice B4

    7:50 nice B4

2:35 G5 and F#5, seems to support up to F#5/G5 she uses runs and hv it a lot

Seems to have something like A3-C5/C#5-F#5/G5?

    YASSSS my girl liyin.

ive been a fan of hers since 2008 and ive been talking/spazzing about her for years, so im glad to finally see someone else post about her lmao. i almost thought i posted this myself and forgot about it.

i would agree with the range u put, personally i think she sounds fine down to G#3. i would give her F#3/A3-C5/C#5-G5, but she has some nice head voice moments above G5 as well. she had A LOT of great performances on a show called "mad for music", but the high quality uploads were copyrighted and removed, unfortunately. ill try to dig them up when i have some more time.

heres a great video to start with if you wanna hear more of her (see below). that being said though, keep in mind that a lot of these clips are older clips from her earlier days after her debut. she improved immensely after ~2013, and changed her mix from a really chesty, belty approach to a more balanced/heady one.

edit: actually, after rewatching this, some of my favourite moments from her are already in this clip.

@0:33 she goes down to E3.

@4:54 one of my favourite C#5s from her (footage from 2006)

@10:00 one of my favourite D5s from her.

doubt they’d keep him in the group, considering his biggest fangroup who moved most of his sales is out of the picture and he’s not going to bring money from overseas since he’s thiiiis close to being blacklisted in the industry.

So far, Label V has used Ten to replace Lucas for a lot of the promos and schedules that he was going to have in China. So it does seem like he's being benched, at least in WayV. I highly doubt that he's ever going to appear in WayV contents again since there's been a huge exposing and hunt of Chinese celebrities by the government, and bringing Lucas back into WayV is a death sentence for the group. Even though WayV did take a hit to their image, the group is still salvageable, especially since WinWin is rising, and recently opened his own studio with Label V for his acting activities.  There's no way that SM is going to risk WinWin and WayV's reputation by putting Lucas back in.

The most popular by far but I mean Winwin has a good reputation so they'll push him now. Lucas always had rumors floating about his immature behavior. The reason why the Lucas and Hendery subunit was shelved :(.

Honestly, the real victim in this is Hendery and Jalapeno. That song sounded like such a bop from the teaser 😕

    how did ningning do here?

omg i saw this clip on youtube this morning. im glad that ningning seems to have polished up her singing a little since forever - she sounded kind of congested around that time lol but now she sounds really clean and clear up to C5. and from the sound of her other singing recently, her C#5s are getting better too. also even though her F#5s in savage are prerecorded, i feel like theyre a lot less shrill than taeyeon's F#5s during twinkle promos.

Giselle was actually trainee for only like 2 months. She left japan and started going to idol academy for about one year before she audition for SM. She got into SM in February 2020 and put into Aespa and started preparing black mamba in April 2020.

yes, and aespa debuted officially in november 2020, so thats 11 months she spent in the company before debut. i dont know where you heard that they started preparing black mamba in april 2020, but even if that were true, giselle (and probably the other girls) probably still had regular individual training schedules. i mean, they probably still have training from time to time now

II don't think giselle supports in general but so far her lines are either rap or sing talk so cannot be really judged. She could really use SM training, considering Giselle was only a trainee for like what 2-3 months and put into a group.

Giselle was a trainee for 11 months. She likely received the basic training breakdown with vocals / rap / dance / hangul classes, but probably with a huge emphasis on dance since she was never a dancer and needed to keep up with the other girls that had trained for 4 years. Karina even dropped out of high school (but wrote and passed her GED, so she is a high school graduate, just didn't attend in-person classes) because she wanted to put all her time and energy into training. She's said before in interviews that she worked harder than anyone else to debut as aespa's center, and I believe her - in terms of dancing, there's a noticeably huge gap between Karina and Giselle. So in those 11 months Giselle was with the company, she probably had very little vocal training since her dancing was far behind (and dancing is IMO, the most important skill of being an idol because these days you can just lipsync to a prerecorded track 99% of the times), and on top of that she's the group's main rapper. tbh, I'm not really concerned about Giselle's vocals since she's not a vocalist in the group lol

Yoo young jin didnt train anyone actually. I think you are thinking of jang jinyoung? I think his actually title is vocal director.

There are alot of vocal trainers under SM, some are independent and some are contracted. SM have roughly about 100 trainees and idols to train and I don't think one person is just training all of them.

YYJ wasn't Winter's vocal coach, but he was a writer/producer for almost all of aespa's songs so far (I believe he was on Black Mamba, Forever, Next Level, AND Savage, and some of the B sides), so he was present during the studio recordings for the songs. The girls have said in interviews that YYJ was there and directed them to sing their lines in certain ways for the recording, ex. NingNing said he made her add a slide to the B4 in Black Mamba, and the girls said he made Winter sing more "aggressively" in Savage despite her having a softer voice (which is probably why she sounds kind of throaty/chesty on her belts). I forgot where they mentioned this, I think it was either the MMTG interview or their showcase lol

  10. i don't know if this has been discussed yet but

ningning singing "just a feeling" acapella after karina suggested it to her (and she sang on the right key without any backing music, which is hard). the chorus is basically all Bb4s and C5s.... her C5s sound pretty good to me...

ningning and aespa in general seem to have different vocal trainers than NCT, no? because all the girls (except giselle, who is their main rapper) have a sense of support...

ningning is only 18 years old, if she continues to develop herself vocally and has a good coach, i think she has a lot of potential...

How is this shading aespa? SMCU encompasses all of their groups and LSM is the obvious mastermind with all of the cringeworthy and gimmicky superhero concepts he’s thought of for SM boy groups.

aespa has the heaviest lore of any SM group as its incorporated directly in their concept, and they literally just had a comeback yesterday. whether or not it was intentional, it was a pretty direct line between what you said and aespa lol but in any case, its not the girls' fault and i hope theyll continue to succeed.

yeah. honestly, it's interesting to see how involved yoo young jin is with aespa. this is the first time i've heard his signature sound so clear for an sm girl group, or at least since ses. wonder why they never did that with snsd, f(x), or rv, lol.

he was always really involved with SM's boy groups, especially EXO and NCT. and i think in TVXQ and Super Junior as well... that's why aespa is so unusual for SM. they have a completely different image and their music is more similar to what SM's boy groups would put out. i like that a girl group is finally showcasing this kind of music and performance tbh...

    masks dont work anyway

Smoke =/= aerosolized water droplets, which is what actually contain viral particles from an infected individual. It’s true that masks don’t guarantee 100% protection, but they’re certainly better than nothing. Studies have shown that if an infected person comes in close contact with an uninfected person, viral transmission is far lower if both are masked, compared to if just one or neither are masked. Stop spreading misinformation and getting your facts from random hooligans online, and listen to actual healthcare professionals.
