  1. well, yes :) among kpop idols,  kara vocals arent invincible, but im comparing to jpop.

Japanese aren't looking for very much polished, but there are* some* japanese (idol) fan base who wants more than akb or the jonnies.

But most of the fanbase of AKB would not want polished idols, thats not those fans are looking for.

they just like AKB for  what they are

Even before this current crop of kpop groups there were all of SM's exports... BoA, TVXQ, SNSD.  Of course Kara also did well, but the Kara lineup that succeeded in Japan weren't exactly amazing vocalists or anything either.  So anyway, the demand for polished idols does exist even in Japan, the problem apparently is that between the 48G and Johnnies those two entertainment companies have the power to lock out most domestic rivals.

  2. I think japan idols / j-pop does not have wide audience (this is what i heard from japanese friend)

more minority culture compared to korean idols / k-pop

being more "the girl next door" " nice and kawaii" is more important.

say the audience prefer more down on earth/ more approachable looking girls and "kawaii" rather than kirei.

like " afterschool" "mamamoo"  wont be as much popular in japan as in korea.

talent, or dancing or powerful isnt a big factor.

of course if my favorite idol can sing, or dance well that catches everyones eye - would attract some fans but its nor that important.

    so that is cultural difference.

i doubt that this show would bring difference to AKB since akb fanbase doesnt want that (talent - or other things.

they like the way they are)

But on the other hand , i do feel that the popularity of TWICE, or BTS and some other kpop groups in japan does show that there are japanese idol fanbase looking for those qualities.

there are also japanese idol E-girls, the same company also launced other jpop boy idol that reminds me of BTS, but it does shows that some japanese fans do like the kpop qualites (?) as well.

Probably just me but those cultural differences are bullshit excuse to determine about skills.
If Japan love cute and charming girls, Korea is even more obsessed with looks. One of popular mems in each group always are visual member. Also like Jpop idol groups, the Kpop groups building fan base with other factors beyond skill too. To be appeal to public, the music has to appealing to them first and foremost, groups also has to promote on T.V a lot (of course popular ones got more opportunities) and be entertaining to attract attention, lots of fan service like Vlive, fansign and the popular shipping between the mems (the mems purposely doing skinship for that). Like I said the same shit, to be popular and gaining fans and selling, Kpop groups also depend lots of other factors.

The only different is Kpop companies bother to provided some years training to be decent at these areas before debuting while 48G company doesn't (probably cuz expensive and time commitment which they don't want, and just debut them quickly).
I will only claim specific this company instead the whole Japan industry cuz I'm sure there are lots of J-groups training properly before debut and not being so cheap (how good they are is another story and about individual too).
The concept of Producer is a show based on evaluation of skills, they have to be judge on the dancing/singing before given the grade. However, it obviously fans/audiences will choose whoever they like (not about just skill) cuz as u guys mentions story line, screen time, good editing matter freakin a lot.
And that come to my first point, there isn't exactly cultural differences that being exaggerated in the show. It silly.
A show about skill will judge based on skill, a show about beauty will be judge by beauty, a show about comedian will be judge by being funny etc. Its about CONCEPT!! That's it. I don't want to freakin hear cultural differences regarding to dancing or singing, so then ppl telling trainers can't judge mems are bad or not in those skills even though is their expertise area (cuz the other country doesn't require and shit and just being cute and entertaining to sell cuz that will be fan option to be a fan. Not the show concept!).

  3. Im not an AKB fan, so i don't know much about those, but my favorite (based on looks) among the akb members in Produce48 is Moe!

something about her is eyecatching :)

like, she has that jordan baker look in gatsby movie. strong, beautiful and something mischeivous

and my other favorites are (as many noted) gaeun, and doa, wonyoung, yena, yujin, and the girl who danced in "gashina" and

well, not really talented but pretty minju. haha. also jurina seems to be a nice person too <3

  4. The more i watch the Produce series, i love the judges, especially BYJ.

I don't find her harsh, she purely judges by skills, nor looks or anything else.

if she baes only on looks Iu girl would have achieved higher grades than F, and

i personally find Noe cute, but her looks are far from the idol standard. but if BYJ judged on looks she

    wouldnt have got grade C.

Still my best produce series are the first ones, but this show only started so we'll see.

I have soft spot on doa, looks so much like sohye hehe <3
