[knetizen] BTS, TXT, Seventeen, NU’EST, GFriend contract expiry date
reiichi replied to bye-bye's topic in Netizen Nation
It would be very surprising that they don't. Source Music has pretty much always managed and treated them well, and they're very successful as a group so the company sees interest at keeping them together. -
Honestly most of their recent problems stem from the fact they don't seem to care about their artists being good people. And it's finally coming to bite them in the ass because the Internet doesn't forget. The sad part of this is, he's more likely to be booted out of the company because of the revelation that he's gay/bi, than for the harassment.

Zico is probably already fed up with having to take care of boring business matters - also, BigHit has more connections than he personally does, and they're good at managing and marketing their artists. Zico is very ambitious, and he knows that his career can only grow so much as a small independent label. Plus he went through a pretty rough patch after leaving Seven Seasons, not having anybody but himself to handle the Golden Phone thing probably made him think a bit about the benefits of having a company to shield him.
-
He's like any businessman who wants to ensure his company's continued success. When you have a successful business, it's just the normal thing to do to expand in order to keep it where you took it... It's probable that Zico was looking for a business partner anyway ; he mostly created his own company because KQ wasn't doing shit for him, but it means that he's had to care of the business side of things, when he probably isn't as interested in it as anything else he does (like producing music or appearing on TV shows). He sold his company to BigHit because he wants other people to take care of the boring parts, or at least get some help with them, while still enjoying relative independence when it comes to his personal career.

JYP has standards in two areas : dancing (in order to be considered for debut you need to meet a minimal requirement, and it's a pretty steep one) and personality (if you're not hard working or not humble enough, you're out as a trainee). They have a visual standard too but it's more open than SM's, they'll favor unique charm over perfectly fitting the Korean beauty standard. Vocals though, they're not that important when you only get 2 lines per song.

Who do you think is a lesbian in kpop?
reiichi replied to Pyo Hyemi's topic in Celebrity News & Gossip
Er, there are many straight guys with a lesbian fetish and Bad Boy fits well within that. -
He doesn't fit the Korean beauty standard and that's what Koreans mostly mean when saying "handsome". Not ticking those boxes doesn't stop him from being popular, he's the most popular in hyung line.

The thing is that the anime industry actively works with the West in order to export their products. These days every single anime is released worldwide with subtitles at most one day after it airs in Japan. Because they had to face heavy piracy, the anime industry has embraced the digital era, much like Kpop - but the Japanese music industry hasn't done the same. So it's not about appeal - but about actually caring about getting an international audience on top of a domestic one, and use the right measures to achieve it.

[NB] Sam Okyere speaks out about Uijeongbu High's blackface parody
reiichi replied to honeyhoney's topic in Netizen Nation
I think that the main difference is that East Asians are dominant cultures in their origin areas, and have mostly been occupied by their neighbors (much like what happened in Europe over time) while Africans were deported, called savages and colonized by Europeans for a good chunk of their history. African Americans are all the more sensitive that they arrived in the country as slaves, and are still largely vilified and othered. Korea has a troubled history full of invasions, but these invasions were at the hands of other East Asian powers, not people with a different skin color and a completely alien culture. It was mostly about nationalism, not racism, and it can explain that Koreans don't really connect with AA experiences, even if they seem similar to an outside eye. -
[NB] Sam Okyere speaks out about Uijeongbu High's blackface parody

Okay, not "never", but you have to contrast that time period with 4 millennia of Chinese history where they're the most important power of the region (and that's indeed why they call it "humiliation"). -
Babymetal got popular in the West is basically in the same way as Kpop groups : - their content is accessible : they have an active Youtube channel, and a distribution deal with western labels which means their albums are cheap and easy to get your hands on - their label doesn't fight fan content : there are concert fancams all over Youtube - they've been touring internationally for years, and they're really good on stage which is why they've received so many accolades from metal musicians

[NB] Sam Okyere speaks out about Uijeongbu High's blackface parody
reiichi replied to honeyhoney's topic in Netizen Nation
Black people take offense at blackface because of the discrimination they've faced and are still facing everywhere in the world. East Asians on the other hand, weren't enslaved or colonized by white people (EDIT : or at least not to the same extent), so the same kind of ignorant display of racism will most likely will be met with condescendance. Not really the same sentiment. -
Which male idols do you think are gay?

This isn't anything suspicious, just random skinship lol. The whole group is comfortably touchy with each other and exaggerate it for the sake of fanservice. -
UP10TION reported to comeback as 7 in September
reiichi replied to speedthief's topic in Celebrity News & Gossip
Top Media never said Wooseok and Jinhyuk were coming back to Up10Tion. They tested the waters by giving the group a comeback without them right after Produce, and they didn't do well. This is their first comeback since (one year later), if they had wanted a boost to the group's popularity they would have made one much sooner, and with Jinhyuk at least. It's been pretty clear to me that they just don't care about the group. -

Nah Top Media just doesn't want to deal with the akgaes, they've been separating them from the group's name since they came back from Produce. When Up10Tion had a fanmeet in Japan, Jinhyuk was included in it because of their contract there, but they apologized to Jinhyuk's fans for it. If you look at the company's statements, Top never mentions Wooseok or Jinhyuk as members of Up10Tion. They're just more profitable as soloists. -

This. Being raised in a homophobic environment doesn't make a gay man straight, it just makes him repressed and self-hating. -

reiichi replied to KentasGlittery EyeMakeup's topic in Netizen Nation
I had tickets for AB6IX, ATEEZ and Seventeen in Paris, that were all supposed to happen between mid-february and mid-march.
