  1. These are my impressions, and because I’m Korean (-American) I might not see the discrimination/glass ceiling that non-Koreans face so some advance apologies if I’m wrong because my perspective is skewed. But . . . Kyulkyung was always known as Chinese and in fact she was often mentioned in the press as one of two stronger Chinese candidates. The other one is from Taiwan or Hong Kong but I’ve forgotten her name. Also, Kyulkyung was voted at top visual by her fellow KOREAN trainees who have have known she was Pledis’ China project. Pledis had 7 members in the show, everyone would have known from just small talk. And I forgotten about Kuanlin in W1. Which proves my point further. Victoria had a ceiling? OMG. She was all over Korea media, especially television. I think, of all the foreigners in KPOP, the Chinese are most fairly treated, most accepted and yes most beloved by Korean fans. Even after Korean entertainment got hit during the Thaad issue, Chinese members were hardly attacked in any way. Our recruitment of SE Asians targeted overseas Chinese too — Nickkhun, BamBam, Kriesha Chu — or in the West — Henry and Mark Lee.. Part of the reason is the culture and aesthetics of Chinese and Koreans are closely related so in general it is often easier to find KPOP visuals among the local Chinese population. Even for Koreans picking out the Chinese members on kpop groups you don’t know is not easy. lol But personally I like more overseas Kpop artists like Lisa or Sorn who look distinctly non-Korean. Somi, of course, looks non-typical Korean and was fully accepted by the nation as the top ranked trainee in the show. I think that builds a goid case that Korea is pretty accepting too.
  2. The Korean nation’s GG from S1 has Kyulkyung as one if its most popular members so aren’t we just as relaxed? LoL I’m pretty sure Mimi and Sunnee are ethnic Chinese from Thailand no? Kyulkyung is not ethnic Korean from China (though it has always been surprising we don’t have any ethnic Korean from Yanbian or other parts of China in our China Line.)
  3. Agree, there needs to be a time interval after PD48 for a fresh corp of trainees to be developed by the agencies. But I don’t believe PD48 will be the last PD 101 in Korea. It will cycle back to Korea after PD101 Mongolia. lol
  4. You mean the last installment of the franchise in Korea? Because there will be PD101 Thailand coming later this year or next. Already there are rumors of PD101 Vietnam. And PD101 China is a massive success already so there will be a lot of economic incentive for sequels. Korea Entertainment Inc. is not in the habit of dropping successful franchises. I don’t think there has been anything official from Mnet/CJ-M that there will be no more PD101 Korea.
  5. The buy-in is not for management of the debuting group. The buy-in is for joining the show and giving up your trainee to Mnet for 2.5 years. One of the Knetz reasonings on the late profile releases is that Mnet is still negotiating with the agencies. There has been no open commitment. Without buy-in from the agencies Mnet would have only free agents.
  6. BTW, I don’t think PD48’s result will be a sister group. Mnet would have to have announced that as the purpose in the beginning and then get the Korean agencies to buy into it. A sister group would mean a permanent competitor that the agencies help create themselves. They wouldn’t even support the national GG I.O.I from S1 being permanent why would they support a half-sister of AKB48 which is foreign? This would be a temporary thing like all survivor show groups. The stage will be temporary too. Two and half years.
  7. Actually, as discussed earlier in the thread, 30 (or more) makes total sense if you are building a group that will run the stage as well.
  8. I gave HoneyPopcorn a chance and I love them and I’m sure I will for the 48s once the thing kicks off. But right now, I’m exercising my right to bitch and moan.
  9. I notice that are a lot of Wangs in the show. Almost like our Kims and Lees. lol
  10. It looks like we are back to the “all 48 all the time†discussion mode . . . Come on Mnet, give the Korean side some damn news!!!
  11. I have the same problem but I can help you with all but the girl who counted beats: The Banana with Blonde Bob: Liu Niyi Battle for A spot: Yamy and Qiang Dongyue also from Banana My trick is to remember a girl with an easy name from a group, like Fu Jing from Banana or Yamy from JC and search for them in Twitter which will then pull up group pictures along with some translations to help you with the who’s who. Click here to view the Tweet
  12. Sunshine is gonna perform in episode!!!! I’ve been anticipating this since I heard about them joining the show. I was afraid they would give them the one secind treatment or leave out their performance entirely. Yeah! Click here to view the Tweet This Show Lu guy is insane! Look at Tao’s reaction. LoL He’s really fvcking entertaining. That chinese gwiyomi thing was cringy and sexist but kinda fun. lol
  13. I think the mentors (judges) lean towards vocals over dance and visuals hence Kimberly, Lucia and Mimi in A. I’m liking the Banana team more and more: Click here to view the Tweet The other Banana blonde was also very good. They performed early and were used to set the benchmark. They were never going to get the highest marks because of it.
  14. Seulgi I could have picked Taeyeon too. lol. Anyways, you explained things in a better way and with better examples than I did. I’ll leave things here because I really don’t want to derail the thread.
  15. Ma’am, all four bands are well known in Korea so saying three of them are not major is a matter of personal opinion. In fact, I think it is a silly opinion for the sake of argument when sales of WJSN latest album was number two among GGs just this week! Click here to view the Tweet Don’t want to get into an argument but I was replying to a statement that Kimberly being above average when compared to Kpop’s main vocals. It is not so in my opinion. Kimberly’s visual is weak even against the A members with quality vocals — Liu Danmeng, Liu Renyu and Angela — never mind kpop.
  16. No. These are some of the main and lead vocals of the major Kpop GGs today: LoonA: Heejin WJSN: Seola BlackPink: Rose CLC: Elkie Kimberly is under the baseline visually. She might be a better singer than some of them but she won’t make it aboard a kpop band.
  17. So you are saying we should be prepared for a pretty ugly final 11? LoL. That’ll actually be pretty fun. My current view of Chinese GGs (SNH48, 7Senses, the original 7 Sense, SING, etc.) had been great visuals to go along with pretty good vocals. This had been pointed out in Knetz over the past years when Kiku, Kiki and the rest had been all over the hangul webspace. The current A list includes three of the best vocals I’ve seen in survivor shows but Kimberly, Mimi and Lucia would never make it on a kpop band based on their visuals. But it would be cool to see a national girl group centered around singing talent. That would be fvcking sad. Sunnee has a great personality and would be a great asset to the group. That said, I like the Banana girls and their looks, especially the Queen’s Seat Girl, Fu Jing. I would think most boys would.
  18. The “ugliest†girl of the “ugliest band in China†is sitting at number 6? Clear choice of the antis? lol
  19. I can see the youtube subs in the US. Now I have to watch the whole damn two hours again. lol But really, understanding the backstories gives a whole new perspective. Like when the SING girl said she’s only 20 but her group had faced disbanding twice and she doesn’t know how much longer she can take it. Or the 1931 girl saying if she had money she would rent out the old theater of her group again. There is definitely a sense of desperation that was missing in 101 S1 with Somi and all the youngsters. This show has a bit of melancholy, a film of sadness along with the desperation. For all the evil editing and competition, S1 was really hopeful. The conflicting emotions in this one makes for good drama but boy it could an emotional ride if you fall for one of the girls from a failed group because this is probably their last chance.
  20. SUCKS!!! Maybe I need to learn mandarin now so by the end of the show in three months I can actually understand shit. The most bizarre thing about watching in Chinese without subs is that you can pick out certain words you’d think is Korean and then fool yourself into thinking you understand things. Then when when its over you have no idea with any of the details.
  21. She’s beautiful in those dance videos. They really botched her make up!
  22. Lol. Seems to me it is rather worse than gwiyomi. Standard gwiyomi doesn’t mimic kisses on or from a guy. Would definitely cross a line in the US. But hell, the whole aegyo routine would cross the line in the US if someone makes a girl do one. This is just an East Asian quirk. What can we do, right?
  23. Liu Ren and Liu Dan are complete packages — looks, voice, dance. Xu Jingyun (Angela) has the voice and looks but not the dance skills. I think the best singers — Kimberlee, Lucia and Mimi — fall short on the visuals and dance skills to the two Lius. The competition is top heavy with vocalists. If all of those stay in A then you can have 6 lead or main vocalists out of 11? Way too many though those are the skills we most admire. At least for K-style bands it would be too many. The five remaining would include two rappers as well as the subvocals/dancers.
  24. Mochichan, I see your point as well and agree that I have preconceived knetz notions about Japan48 and its fans. Still I can’t help but be squeamish. Anyways, the reason we are going into this hole is because there is no news on the Korean front (which is crazy for such a high profile show at this late stage) and we end up discussing 48 ad infinitum.
  25. I think it means they’ll vote in the ugliest center possible so she doesn’t distract viewers from the other girls? lol
