Oh, good points re the general feel of the show (camerawork, which annoyed me - just let me watch the entire sequence without annoying stops/repeats) and the scoring system. The scoring system needs to let audience votes represent a smaller percentage to account for bias so that the professional judges have more impact. Some of the audience votes are so obviously biased (especially with certain coaches/members) that I think diminishing the percentage of their votes would make it a lot more fair. Also letting the voters vote AFTER the judges have said their share just strikes me as a bit off, because the judges could influence the audience opinion of the dance when it really should be their own opinion.

Have you seen the latest ep yet? What do you all think? And what do you think about the debate that arose after the episode, regarding the importance of the theme (the theme in ep 5 is 'K-wave')? Curious to know what your thoughts were. I've yet to watch the full episode but I have caught some of the clips.

  2. I'm so glad to have a place to talk about this show! I'm not much of a dance person and I don't know anything about it tbh, but I watched the first few eps because I had nothing else to watch - I stumbled upon it lol.

Anyway, regarding the performances (and bear in mind I don't know much about dance):

    Group performances:

    1. JJ - I'm not sure if the members of JJ's group are all of the same genre (?) but it certainly felt that way. They danced well - it was all very uniform, and from what I understand of JJ, very much the genre that JJ dances. It was a solid performance. The only thing is that it felt too uniform, and therefore quite bland to me. No one in particular stood out to me. So imo this is a good group performance, just not a very memorable one.

    2. Hoony - I really enjoyed this one. I felt this expressed the theme and further sub-theme of teenage violence very well, and unlike the first performance, I felt every single one of them stood out in different ways - I felt they all had a story that added up to the main overarching story, and this individuality was very well expressed in their different genres that they danced. So it was very cohesive as a group to me, and showed a lot of their individuality. I love it. The music was very, very fitting as well. If I were to nitpick - some parts were less uniform (some people danced faster/slower at some points) but this performance is definitely among the top for me.

    3. Hoya - I came into this knowing Hoya's a phenomenal dancer (his solo portion of the judges performance really impressed me too), and I have to admit I had high hopes for this. Imo this is a great group performance, and very cohesive. Unlike JJ, I felt the members could display their individual abilities. That being said, like someone pointed out earlier, I felt some members upstaged the rest. Coming after Hoony's, this also felt a bit flat, because I felt it didn't fulfill the theme and didn't really have a storyline. The dance was great, but it felt like a dance without a theme.

    4. Gikwang - Probably the weakest among the group performances imo. The lack of groupwork really showed; they definitely needed more practice. I liked this, don't get me wrong, because it felt very upbeat. But at the same time, I felt that it was a very generic dance, and could have had more complexity as befits the competition.

    5. Lia Kim - Ahhhhh this one. wasn't sure how they would choreograph a dance to this song, especially with so many 'aces' whose dance styles are so very different from each other. But there was a good storyline, and their expression of the theme was done well, and I loved that we could see the different members displaying their dance styles. Overall, felt very cohesive despite the individuality of the dancers, and their expressions (facial and body) were aces. I do think Hoony's was more cohesive but Lia Kim's team choreography feels more complex.

My faves: Hoony and Lia Kim's team.

    Ace performances:

    1. JJ - I was very surprised to see three girls - and I love that they chose three girls! Like the team perf, it was well choreographed and everyone felt very uniform except one who stood out more than the rest. They did well, but for whatever reason, it felt bland overall.

    2. Hoony - Can I just say that this was so adorable? As someone who grew up playing Mario, this was amazing. The song choice (gaming sounds), the jumping and running and mock fighting and eating the mushroom - it was all very much like I was playing the game. The facial expressions were on point too - I love Donggyo's Luigi. I had so much fun with this performance, and I loved it. It wasn't as complex as the rest in hindsight, and I can understand Feeldog's lower scoring for it (I may not necessarily agree, but I can see where he's coming from). That being said, it was so very creative (I showed this to my mum cos she plays Mario too and she was spellbound, and she said they really brought the game to life) and while not as technical as the rest, did a great job bringing out the emotions and theme, and definitely brought so much fun to the stage.

    3. Hoya - I liked this duo, and I think one definitely did much better than the other but that the dance was good as a whole. But as Hoya himself pointed out, it's about the dance. It was technical, very complex and the duo obviously showed great chemistry with each other. But the focus on the dance alone showed, and I wanted some emotional connection because this was like eating a bland souffle - highly technical but without must taste (imo).

    4. Gikwang - I didn't expect much after the initial team performance but this blew my mind. The music choice, the dancing and stage makeup - wow. It was complex and technical AND it has a storyline. I was very impressed, and repeated this immediately to watch the dance again. Wow, just WOW.

    5. Lia Kim - A letdown, especially with how good the team perf was, mistakes aside. I definitely expected more.

My fave: Gikwang's team, hands down. Then Hoya, and Hoony.

    Overall thoughts:

I really am enjoying the show.

I think each team mentor has a distinct style and way of doing things, and it definitely showed. I know idols get flak for not being as good, but the three idol mentors were definitely well chosen imo, and Lia Kim and JJ brings a lot to the table as well.

By the end of ep 4, I'm quite sure that as someone who knows nothing much about dance, the storyline/concept plays a big role for me in helping to emotionally connect with the dancers and what they want to portray. Hoony does a great job in this. Among the idol judges I thought he was the weakest in dance (based on the judges initial performance) but wow, that level of creativity. He really is an amazing storyteller. Lia Kim is an artist, and it shows. Idk why I enjoyed her group perf more than her aces perf (it should be the other way around?) but she's very creative also.

Hoya is great, and very passionate about his craft and it shows in the dance techniques and the choreography. I wish he would focus more on the emotional aspect as well, and I feel this way about JJ team too. Regarding JJ team, I look for more individuality among the members, because while a group dance needs to be uniform and cohesive to a certain extent, I feel it should also be more colourful.

I think Gikwang's team was good but not great because of the lack of practise. They are already the underdogs in the show since Gikwang has no one from the top 10, but I want for them to have performances as good as their ace performance.

Overall, I'm enjoying the show very much, and can't wait to catch the next ep!

    Other member's schedules:

    • Chengcheng - Running Man, LV, Paparecipe masks, Yuehua schedules** (Olay, Adidas Neo, Crocs,Travel agency CF in Thailand, Bazaar photoshoot, YOHO magazine, various interviews etc etc),
    • Justin - Yuehua**, coffee promo on his Weibo
    • Yanjun - Fendi, Banana stuff (Chaoze's birthday event, Wanda Cinema stuff, Banana reality show*), iQiyi conference
    • Zhengting - Yuehua**, Daniel Wellington
    • Ziyi - ???? please do a livestream warstarplz.png anything

    • Zhangjing - Fendi, Banana activities (same as Yanjun), iQiyi conference

Anyone know why Ziyi has so little activities? I feel bad for him, and wish his company would do more for him (my understanding is that Simple Joy is a really tiny company?). :((( I'd like to see him do anything at this point - variety, acting, etc and more updating of his social media.

(i'm just afraid his current popularity will fade, and seeing all their music etc being delayed - I don't want for these 18 months to go by without him achieving his dreams)

  5. Oh thank God it's still Ziyi appreciation day.

(My real life has been so hectic lately but I'd have hated to miss this!)

He's my ultimate one-pick, and I'm so glad he made it into 9 percent.

There are so many things I want to say about him that have already been said (0.5 of Zikun, kind, generous, skilled, good-looking, etc), so I won't repeat them but I want to say this (not sure if it has been said?) HE LOOKS SO GOOD IN HIS WALKING POSTS. Like all the time. He always looks so good and he always makes his clothing look so expensive (I'm pretty sure it is, but you get what I mean). I love his walking posts because everything just looks so expensive on him (such an ability hahahaha).

(+ king of black and white aesthetics hahahah, his Instagram posts are all black and white & obviously carefully curated - what an artistic man hurhur)

This Twitter post is everything tbh (it's a translation of a Weibo appreciation post for Ziyi)

    Also this:

And this omg (I would die if I could shake his hand hahaha, I wouldn't even mind the sweat lololol)

    Also:

I saw this and I just want to give him a big hug and tell him how proud we are of him for doing his best and never letting us fans down.

  7. On a tangent, I found WZY's question to Jolin very cool. I might be reading too much into it. His fans have been bemoaning the fact that he's too kind and should be more selfish in terms of competing for lines/positions; but his question implies that that something that's a part of him and he wants to continue being, even though to the outside world it might not 'suit' (be disadvatangous) to him.

I did too. The Q&A session with Jolin was great, and not just because it's Jolin there. The trainees asked very thoughtful questions, and I liked that she was very candid to them about what to expect and their reaction to it (especially to trainees receiving a tonne of hate). She's been there, done that and come out stronger for it, and because of that her advice is all the more valuable.

I'm always impressed by Ziyi, because he's very eloquent and comes off as very mature for his age. Like you, I read a bit deeper into his question as well, and I'm glad he asked about it because it's important to be true to yourself as an artist, and Ziyi should keep being who he is. The sacrificial thing - it's definitely his thing, and I've thought on several occasions myself that he didn't have to be so 'nice' (I wouldn't be - it is a competition after all). But if he understands the weight of his decision and can live with it and is happy to do so, I'm good with supporting what he wants too.

Because despite all that and still being standout (in a lesser position) is an ability too. He's proving his mettle - that he has the capability to stand out even if he doesn't get centre/prominent positions. And him willing to be do so also gives him a means to defend against haters - because people can say its calculated and his kindness is fake but what else can they say about his character? Nothing else very substantial, and even their 'claims' that his kindness is calculated is weak as well because at the end of the day this is the reality - he gave up an advantageous position (to some of their faves) and still performed excellently in the role he was allocated. No one else can say otherwise.

So in terms of vocals in the Top 9, Zhangjing for sure is my pick. He may prefer ballad-y songs but his first perf (audition with the Banana trainees) shows he can shine in a group setting as well. I honestly want Ruibin as well, because out of the Top 20, I think his voice best complements Zhangjing, plus it's a pretty strong voice of its own. But Ruibin's rank... :(

I mentioned this when I watched the ep last week, but I think Zhenghao is a great vocalist, but not necessarily the best to be in a group because his vocal tone and colour is quite different from that which a boygroup is expected to have. That being said, out of all the vocalists not in the Top 9, by rank alone he's the most likely to get into the Top 9 lol.

  9. This episode has been so exhausting. Alternating between laughing and crying.

Some thoughts about the ep (quite incoherent):

    1. Eliminations:

    - Nooooo. Not Yanchen. Cried so hard during that scene, cried even harder because it was Ruibin vs Yanchen and I wanted them both in the Top 20. There is no way I could have picked between the two. I just wanted them both to be in so badly.

    - I can't believe they've been separated. The Gramarie boys (I had the most hope for them and they were the most well rounded bunch in the top 35), Yuehua, MuboFen... :'(

    - the benefit for Xukun's group made such a difference I think?

    - Can't believe Mubo didn't make it in.

    - Xingjie dropped :(

    - I am so proud of Lin Chaoze, he deserves it.

    - YASSSSS YANJUNNNN!

    - Ling Chao's speeches always make me cry.

    - How did Zhenghao place so highly? Very unexpected. I liked his singing City of Stars but afterwards not so? It's still good but I tend to prefer lower voices and he had to switch his vocal tone and colour to match that of a more traditional boy group and to match the other trainees.

    - Top 9 as expected, but didn't think Ziyi would place 5th or that Zhengting would drop so much.

    2. Ghost Prank

    - Yanjun the MVP.

    - wish we could see Ziyi's full reaction lololol

    - The reactions were hilarious, won't spoil it for you - go watch it!

    3. Musical Chairs

    - How much air goes into that fatsuit lololol

    - Qin Fen made me laugh so hard.

    - Zhenghao's suit was so funny

    4. Top 9

    - I do think we need more vocals, and would love if Yanjun got into the Top 9. (Cant separate Zhangjing from himmm)

    - I would prefer Ruibin and Xingjie over Zhenghao tbh but I'm not sure how things will go. I wouldn't mind Ling Chao too though? I sort of want Qins to debut as OT4 but I also understand that one of them in IP would help the company

    - I don't think Zhengting will drop out of the Top 9 but it is worrying.

    - Zhangjing's spot is precarious.

    - The one pick is worrying.

    - Xukun needs to be centre.

    - I hope Ziyi doesn't drop put of the Top 9 during one pick

My fixed pick is Ziyi but a lot of my faves (Yanjun, Xingjie, Ruibin) are outside the Top 9 so Idk. Halp.
