  1. The animal-costume performances have honestly made me lowkey hate Waggy. I pray that's the end of that. I love their sense of humour but I have limits.

Also praying that they'll perform other B-sides. An utter waste to not do Bad Bye or My Star at least once.

In better news, GogoBebe has grown on me in a big way. It's got so much replay value.

  2. Easily the best of the four seasons minis for me. The production here is so good across the board, consistent and feels really current without compromising on their vocals. They're always strongest to me when they lean into R&B, and here they did so and actually had amazing bass production on most of the songs (which often feels lacking from some of their previous releases). 25 is so great, Wheein's vocal is something else definitely my fave solo after Be Calm - the two songs are really cool to listen to one after the other.

Gogobebe is probably the weakest title of the four though. Egotistic still reigns on that, with Starry Night and Windflower tied second for me. I think Gogobebe might be a grower though, the performances bring it to life. It's a strong song either way. Bad Bye is easily the best song they've released in nearly two years for me.

  3. Calling it now. White Wind will be my fave album of the whole project. Everything sounds incredible. 25 sounds gorgeous, I hope Wheein does a video for it even if it's a home-made one like Be Calm and that she gets to perform it! My Star, Where R U and GogoBebe are early faves already. But everything sounds lush and beautifully produced.

  4. In hindsight I wish they had named it a four COLOURS project (as it seemed to be originally) rather than seasons. Having it be seasonal has locked them up in terms of timing and also creatively, I feel. It sucks having to try and match an album to a season instead of just making the best album you can make and releasing it in a time that makes sense. And being constantly so crazy-busy meant they all couldn't do other things.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they delayed the white album beyond winter and just pretended that it was never about seasons to begin with, lol. I want a good album. I want a fire music video. And, personally, I want some fire choreography. They can just say that they want to end this project with a bang and don't want to rush it if there are delays, no one will be mad about it.

For the rest of the year, once white album is out of the way - I really hope for some good touring regionally and internationally, even just small venues, but they have to return to Brazil, maybe do KCON in the US and do a few dates there, and... I'm dreaming here but I wish they'd go to Europe as well. Perhaps France, Spain and the UK where they do quite well. And I really want clear and ambitious solo activities for each member (and not just in terms of music, but whatever they desire to do, give them time to explore and expand their individual brands). Then they can do another group album towards the end of the year ahead of awards shows etc. It'd be great if that was a full album but I'm not picky. They can probably throw in a completely Japanese single in there sometime as well, that'd be great.

I hate to say it like this but I'll be relieved to see the end of the four colours project because I think it did its work - it opened many, many doors and opportunities for Mamamoo - and I'm excited for whatever's next.

  5. I think what I like most about TWIT is that it's a very simple, straightforward song in terms of production. The flute part obviously is a great musical hook and there's some great bass but it's very digestible in the way pop songs that can be liked by many need to be (and I think this is exactly the kind of song she needed to put out as a debut because it's something anyone can jam to even if they don't have strong feelings for it). The real magic is in Hwasa's voice, the lyrics and the video. And it all just hangs together really well.

  6. I'm loving the teasers, to be honest. Some of the photoshopping on the first one was hilarious but overall the vibe of the teaser was intriguing, what do the hands represent, her tears, the goddess look. I actually really love the second one. Again, such a distinct LOOK from her and an emphatic statement -- it's telling that that's the one which has gotten the most likes, over 50k on Twitter and 300k+ on Instagram. People seem to love that kind of glamour and excess, and she carries it well. I dislike the lower lip as much as others but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the photo. The third one gives us signature Hwasa glare-gaze and the styling is on point. And now this last one, with her tattoos and the dramatic eyeliner and that GAZE...

I'm excited. I hope the song is good and the video delivers, and we get some good choreo. I'm glad she's chosen to promote this. Also I love that it's not a collaboration and just how much creative direction she had with the song itself and clearly the visuals.

As for expectations, I honestly have none. I'll be happy if she gets one number one on a chart or none as long as the music is good. The general public would have to get behind the song for it to be a hit amidst all the competition, and knowing how fickle they can be, I have very little faith in that. I know she's one of the most anticipated this month but like others have said, plenty of people are anticipated and their songs did nothing. Our fandom isn't small but it's not big either and we aren't generally obsessive over streams or views. So really, however well it does it will be a blessing. Things are really and truly just beginning for her.

  7.

Yesterday was an absolute nightmare with those K-radfems (some of whom are moomoos) attacking Hwasa and the girls.

It makes me hope that in her upcoming solo video, Hwasa will wear a bevy of pretty corsets and other fun outfits just to piss all these people off.

I'm so curious what genre she's gonna go for.

  8. I mean, we did hear her sing Bohemian Rhapsody a few days ago. And her vocals sounded really good on the GDA performance, although she used the backtrack when she needed to, it wasn't overly excessive to my ear. If one of these awards shows gives her a big slot one day, then she'll have time to cut loose with the vocals but so far anyone who is not familiar who watches seems impressed with her vocals, presence, charisma and stage manners. So she's doing something right.

I'm kind of hoping she gets to do something where she shows off her jazz and blues singing. I wish Duet Song Festival was still around, or that she'd do something like Kpop Planet again. OR I hope she debuts solo soon and does a little bit of promo for it.

GDA is probably my fave Hwasa performance at an awards/gayo so far, even beating out MAMA, which I didn't think was possible. Her charisma was on full display, and just her mastery of the stage and audience is really special. I've seen solo artists in their third decade that can't do it as well as she does. Also, I love that gold jumpsuit. It reminded me of classic J.Lo or Selena outfits, kind of over the top sparkly and glamorous, and the colour complimented her skin really well. She looked like a star.

I didn't like the remix for Starry Night and especially Egotistic, that snare drum was awful in the latter. But I appreciated the effort to try something different, and bring in a bit of their retro sound. Also their outfits and looks were on point. Each one doing a play on a tux in her own way, sexy but not try-hard. They looked powerful. I'm also really loving the introduction of quite intricate choreography, hopefully this bodes well for white album and beyond. I've been wanting them to challenge themselves with choreo more and more, and they're delivering on that front.

  9. Thank you to everyone who answered me about the different MBC stages!

Now, onto this amazing news. In all my dreams, I didn't imagine I would get to see Hwasa perform Queen - that's one of those things I didn't even think to wish for because I didn't think it would happen. I'm so excited for her. This is a huge deal! Thank you, MBC, for treating our maknae so well. And then everything I've read about the girls, from outfits to their setlist, has me so excited. I LOVE that they will be doing it at the side venue as this seems to have more of a concert atmosphere than the main one, if I recall rightly, and that will sound epic with all the performances they're doing. Hope we'll still see some reactions from other idols to their great performances.

So excited to watch these, although I'm not sure I'll be able to stream as I am going to watch Aquaman. But hooray! And I'm glad all the worrying was for nothing and hope that all of us moomoos will be less paranoid, I admit, I was scared too for a bit there. Let's enjoy the New Year!

  10. Jujima x Cider mash up would be cute - also it's basically all about food too so still fits with the mukbang stuff. Who thought of this random ass collaboration anyway.

    Come through for Hwasa Jesus!

    zsP.gif

MBC probably wanted to find a way to milk ILA since one or both the members of Norazo were recently on and obviously Hwasa is a semi-regular. But I really wish it wasn't having the potential to be dodgy. SK will probably love it but yeah. Hopefully all goes well, I'm hoping to be surprised and delighted by it all.

Question to others who are familiar with MBC Gayo, if the girls are pre-recording, does this mean they will attend the main gathering where all the artists sit and watch each other? While it would be quite nice, I would think it would be horrible to be stuck watching such a long show and would rather they got to go spend New Year's relaxing and such.

  11. I'm hoping the special stage tomorrow will either be a mash up of Jujima and Cider, which would actually be really hilarious. Or else a cover of something entirely different. I'm not interested in Hwasa having to sing someone else's songs again, especially after the major year she's had. So fingers crossed, that's what we'll get.

  12. I think the immediate focus of Mamamoo should be to tour and establish themselves internationally. It will be something that in the long run will serve them very well. It seems like that is the plan based on recent announcements, and I'm 100% for it. I really hope the fanmeetings in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand go well so that they can come back and do full fledged concerts there.

Secondly, Mamamoo should lean into their sexy and dynamic image. None of their peers have that image right now and rookies generally can't/don't have that image for various reasons. There is a huge opportunity for them to fill that role and really stand out and be representative of it. RBW should start coming up with excuses for a high energy/sexy comeback for Winter/White album lol. And they should come back twice next year and try their hardest to make an impact musically. Starry Night was good, but I really do think Egotistic really did something for them (and I think they know it).

TV will help, but I think RBW has to be careful. I think they should shy away from anything that's too time intensive. And they should focus on shows like I Live Alone where they can be themselves and act naturally. And hopefully more music/performance based shows (hyena on the keyboard, immortal songs, etc) appear bc they always do well on those.

EDIT: about Hwasa, they should release a single album, maybe 1-3 songs, with a good featuring. They don't have to focus that much on music show performances, just have a good song, good video, good production and promote it well so that it can chart highly.

Great points. Especially like your thinking around the high energy/sexy comeback, they really do feel fresh and exciting and I hope to see more of that. Also re: Hwasa, I like your plan.

  13. Dropping a controversial question.. do you guys think its a good idea for hwasa to release a solo song (with promos) soon like e.g. in January? (No big comebacks announced so far and if the song does well it can even be in the running for soty)

She has a lot of hype lately and a good song allowing her to showcase her amazing charisma would propel her (and hopefully mamamoo) further.

Loco is only enlisting Feb 2019, would probably be interesting if he could feat in the song too.

I don't think it's controversial at all. RBW has to be thinking really strategically for the group and each members solo activities in the coming year. Mamamoo's profile has grown, and it's a really exciting and crucial time to figure out how to harness that. With Hwasa, her profile has really grown and that's even with their crazy schedule not permitting her to do what the other high profile girls are doing i.e. getting a permanent variety slot etc. I'm really hoping she has a solo debut soon but I also don't want them to rush it, so maybe if there is another collaboration in early 2019 or something that might work. But like others have said, they can really capitalise on the hype for the whole group, and Hwasa, so they have to be super smart about it.

I have to say, I'm relieved the 4 Seasons project is nearly over. I think it will free up all the members to do some side projects, maybe do the permanent variety slots or MCing, release solo minis or songs, etc. This year has been insane and they are reaping all the rewards for their hard work. Next year, with the right strategy, their stars could only continue to shine brighter and they could have some big individual ventures as well.

I would love a big performance-based song for the fourth album. Go out with a bang, I say. Like with Egotistic, where most groups were releasing very 'cool and refreshing' songs, they came with the heat. So it'd be cool for them to defy expectations again and come with something powerful, badass and sexy. I also would love for them to do another big ballad pre-release like I Miss You.

  14. Really hoping Mnet releases whatever content they have for Mamamoo in the coming days. It just seems rather odd that every other group has all their content up except Mamamoo, and that they take down this one fancam that was trending while there are plenty others that are still up. Leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Anyway, let me hope that my low expectations of how this industry works are not true.

Still not over the performances, and have pretty much been watching them on repeat the last two days. So proud of them for delivering an iconic stage. They did so well!

  15. I'm still marveling over these performances. As in, at least once every hour, I go and watch them lmao. I'm glad it's holiday time for me so I can afford to be so ridiculous. But Mamamoo really just -- I haven't been so thrilled by a performance in a long time. Really, the only girl group that's ever excited me in a similar way is Little Mix (speaking of, that would be my dream collaboration - Little Mix x Mamamoo, make it happen universe!).

I'm so proud of the girls for taking that platform, and really maximising it. For groups that always get such big performance slots, it's maybe not a big deal. But Mamamoo treat every performance, and especially on awards shows, as if its gold and I love that. But this. Even for them, was a whole new level of excellence. I love the theme of "Born to be Mamamoo", that they celebrate each other as individuals and the different texture they all bring to the group and then coming together in that "explosion of allure" like the preview described it.

I'm going to be obsessing over this performance for a long time.

  17. I'm so excited for MAMA. I really hope the stage has even higher production value than MMAs (some kind of story, great costumes, a dance break, a superior set to the MMA oneetc.) and that Mnet give the girls some good amount of time to really show themselves. The emphasis on powerful performances has me hopeful. But tbh, I haven't been impressed by MAMA stages the last several years. The last ones I wholeheartedly loved were Big Bang and 2NE1 in 2015 and I still watch those now. So, now this year with Mamamoo finally getting invited (after an egregious amount of time, if you ask me) and BTS stepping up to a new level of stagecraft, I have some high hopes for this Japan show.

  18. My two cents. I'm glad that there is a segment of the fandom that is fired up to do that kind of highly dedicated streaming and tweeting etc. Every fandom needs those kind of energies. It would be unfortunate if everyone in the fandom had the same approach to being a fan, or if the fandom itself was stagnating or declining or becoming largely apathetic about things like that. Much as people might like to disregard that stuff, it matters in terms of how pop culture is evolving now. (And given Hwasa even mentioned about them appearing on that Billboard chart, they're clearly aware of these things).

All of these debates and disagreements, and different positions are a good indication that the fandom is growing. And that speaks to how great Mamamoo is and how even a little increased exposure on platforms like Melon, a performance that trended worldwide because of said fans, or something like the Billboard editor tweeting about their talent and music (which he did because their profile had increased on that Billboard social media chart) can bring more people to them. We don't all have to be one of those fired up types and I don't think it's always healthy how obsessive some folks can be about ##s and charts and streams -- because I came here for the music and these four talented women first, not for bragging rights. But I don't think it's necessary to pooh-pooh those things or imply that those fans are somehow silly for doing fandom the way they choose to.

While I'm not a fan of people getting overly negative and only seeing the pessimistic side of things re: things like RBW etc., the company's approaches do deserve some critique -- and there is a lot of room for improvement with them. As others have said, they were fine being a small company but the transition from that to something much larger with multiple acts on the go is going to be difficult. I doubt it was easy for the established companies and what we're seeing here are some very tricky growing pains for the company. For all the RBW artists' and employees' sake, I hope that they have some kind of breakthrough and figure out how to evolve in the most sustainable way.

  19. It's a shame extending promotions will do very little for this comeback given it's likely too late to book anything of note as has been pointed out. But I hope we get to see more songs from the album performed (I need Morning, live, please @ god). No More Drama is so great, the choreo is so sharp and powerful. And it was lovely to see them with Kim Shinyoung this morning.

  20. If RBW wanted both a comeback and a concert, then they should have planned things in a way and with a sufficient time gap where one activity does not negatively impact the other and does not overwork the group.

That's it. That's the root of fan complaints - RBW sucks at planning.

Prioritizing a concert via which they obviously intended to rake in money from fans and which does nothing for promoting Mamamoo's music to the general public does not excuse poor promotional planning for the comeback.

Even if a promotion period is shorter of course fans would still expect that a comeback would get promoted well within the time limit because that's a reasonable expectation to have of an entertainment company. That's why the concert got boycotted because if promotions were proper it just would have been too much for the girls.  Of course during the boycott RBW could not just come out and say that they were planning all along to do half-assed promotions so suck it up Moomoos and go along with the concert - fans would have rioted in front of the building.

I was skeptical about the boycott at first but I am now glad it happened because it has exposed exactly how poor and self-serving RBW's planning in all this was.

The members have said themselves that this year has been physically taxing, that it's difficult on them. Solar and Moonbyul had injuries this years. Sure, they like working and keeping busy but there's a limit to everything.

Added to that, this is what the girls themselves said at the recent fansign

So as it turns out because RBW had released incorrect info to the press and couldn't own up to it and correct it the girls had to cram more into this year than was originally intended.

The decision making at that company is whack.

All this, particularly the bolded. All RBW had to say during the boycott is that they had no intention of promoting the album and putting  its title track in the best position to perform well on the charts. No variety, no appearances, no performances except a few days of music shows, the awards shows they get invited to and gayos. And maybe fans would've backed off and understood the (odd) strategy. The album would of course be shortchanged and the concert would still feel like a blatant money-grab but at least there would be clarity on every side.
