I forgot to point out that I didn't post this because I necessarily agreed with it, like I said it was quite a long way back. Iirc the 'Kyuhyun is asexual' mantra was quite prevalent back then. Scrolling down the source blog it seems Tae_min was put in that category as well and it's not very likely on his part either.

 

Fangirls in general aren't very sophisticated with the way they use these terms. To them 'girly guys' are gay, 'manly guys' are straight, bi are when they're not sure and asexual is when they don't know. Nowadays what with Kyuhyun's non-celebrity killer image and all the other examples you mentioned I don't think people would actually claim he 'doesn't show interest', to either gender really. Tbh all old posts about him on this topic or any other tend to end up being quite outdated. He's progressed so much and opened up a lot since his early days.

 

About that apparent contradiction, I think the blogger means that he doesn't seemingly fit the stereotypes that people usually bring up in those speculations, like being girly or a diva (usually mentioned about Hee*hul, Key or Jo Kwon). I think 'refined mannerisms' is a bit lower on the list of gay stereotypes. But I'm just guessing. And to be fair, it's not like Kyuhyun being one way or the other would actually be proving anything anyway.

Oh yea I didn't mean I thought you agreed with it, but I have read people speculate that they think he's asexual because, as you say, they don't know either way. Could be an interesting subject of discussion.

The mannerisms/style is like what happens with Amber and what people say about her sexuality. Maybe 'refined' is also as a result of social status? How rich/well-off people act can be different from how poorer people act? Kyu's family is not "rich" but more upper middle class. Also the fact that he is close to his sister so that probably influenced how he acts and behaves as well.

Also, I stumbled on something I thought to share. It's from a blog post where someone was commenting about an old 6theory 'Who in kpop is gay?' thread. It's mainly laughing at fangirl logic and speculation but she shared one comment about Kyuhyun too. I'm sharing it here because i) The thread doesn't exist anymore, so I'm just archiving it for future reference and ii) I think I remember reading it back in the old forum and for some reason as a pretty new fan of his kinda liking the sentiment behind it? My sentiment is echoed by this blogger commenting on the comment and her addendum was nice too, so yeah.

That's interesting and I do recall reading that comment when it was on 6theory at the time. Regardless of whether he is or is not gay, I don't agree that he shows no sexual interest. It's funny in a sense - what does it means to "show sexual interest". Heechul showed sexual interest in Sohee for the longest time but people still thought he was gay. Outside of them saying I like men or I like girls or I have a crush on ___, going on wgm, pictured flirting with women, rumors of dating women/men, etc, wouldn't it be hard to see them show "sexual interest"?

Remember that picture of Kyu and Hyuk staring at the girl's ass? Isn't that somewhat showing interest? LOL Didn't he tell us that he kissed his girlfriend and liked it and wanted to kiss again and did kiss again? Isn't that also showing interest?  Also, hasn't he described to us what he likes in a girl? Wouldn't this also be classified as "showing sexual interest" of some kind and on some level?

On the opposite end, we can describe all the manner in which he has shown skinship with guys lol. Do they count in any way? Exaggerating but just because he's not the playboy with lots of dating rumors doesn't mean he's asexual.

I just find it hard to imagine what is the minimum level required to show "sexual interest" before one is not classified "asexual". It's just an odd category since I find it's almost impossible for us to be able to determine whether someone is "asexual" or not on any level.

One other thing I think could be a topic of discussion, when the commenter said that his mannerisms are "very refined" and the blogger commented that if he was gay it would show that "the traits commonly associated with homosexuals are wrong". I wonder about this though because aren't gay men associated with somewhat "refined" mannerisms (however true or false that may be)? Such as how they hold their tea cups, how they hold their hands and all that. So wouldn't having refined mannerisms be typical of the traits associated with homosexual men? Or am I misunderstanding something?

  I just love Kyu in Chinese/Taiwanese variety shows. SJM should make a comeback or Kyu should debut as a solo artist in China.

Also the main thing I am happy about is that he is recognized by the general public as a singer, not just an idol. I hope it continues and that he is able to showcase his vocal abilities to them on shows and such. Musicals are a different beast since most of the public don't go watch those.

What I find amusing are people here who act like they have such superior taste in music but then would name their western bias as someone like Avril Lavigne for example. Are you sure you have room to act all superior? LOL No one should be acting all high and mighty cuz frankly none of the music acts I've seen is that superior to another, though there are awful songs. Some groups that get bashed have members that are more talented than in other groups or are more talented over all, but hey people are lemmings. I would also say those digital chart toppers...woah, South Korean sometimes like really terrible songs. Then fans eat that shit up and act like a digital chart topper means quality music.
