    INTRODUCTION:

Tsuchiya Tao is a Japanese actress, model, and dancer. She is most likely to be notable to international fans for her role as the female ninja Makimachi Misao in the film series Rurouni Kenshin that gained recognition from many different countries beyond Japan. She was also featured as the dancer for the Japanese version of the singer Sia's music video for the song "Alive".

    EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION:

Born on February 3, 1995, Tao is the middle child of the family. Her eldest sister, Honoka Tsuchiya is a cheerleader and Japanese traditional dancer. Her younger brother is Shimba Tsuchiya.

She has been training in classical ballet and Japanese traditional dance buyÅ from the age of 3. She is currently a fourth year college student and is majoring in dance on Japan Women’s College of Physical Education.

    TAO-CHAN'S CAREER:

Tao started her career by winning the Jury’s award in the SuperHeroine Audition Miss Phoenix in 2005, besting about 37,000 other people who joined the said audition. In 2008, she became an exclusive model of Hanachu magazine until 2010. She made her film debut as a minor character named Mika Kurosu in â€œTokyo’s Sonataâ€.

Her first bigger role was that of Sanpei's (Suga Kenta) childhood friend in the movie "Tsurikichi Sanpei" by the director of the award-winning movie "Okuribito" , Takita Yojiro. It was him who discovered her and he has a very high opinion of her. That movie in 2009 was her 2nd ever work as an actress. She's been born and raised in Tokyo, but she was able to perform the role of Yuri and her Akita-typical spontaneity, blowing the director away with her performance during the audition.

In 2011, she got her first recurring role on TV Tokyo’s Suzuki Sensei as Somi Ogawa, garnering her a lot of attention. In 2014, she got the role of Makimachi Misao in Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno and went on to reprise the role in the third installment of the movie, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends.

In 2015, she got more recognized after being selected to star in NHK’s morning drama ("asadora") Mare where she took on the protagonist role of Tsumura Mare. In the same year, Tao reunited with her Mare costar Yamazaki Kento in the live-action film Orange where she played the role of Naho Takamiya. Her role in the film earned her the Newcomer of the Year Award in the 39th Japan Academy Awards in 2016.

Tao continued to make waves as she delivered a powerful dance performance in the special version Sia’s ‘Alive’ music video for the Japanese market. Despite her busy schedule, Tao trained hard for three weeks in order to film the video. and it wasn’t all for naught as Tomohiko Tsujimoto, famous dancer and choreographer, who is the author of the dance routine Tao performed in the video, said that he had goosebumps when he saw this new and wild side of  Tao.

Despite the public’s initial skeptical doubts about whether she deserves to get that opportunity, Tao delivered a very fierce and powerful dance and acting performance in the music video. The video got a huge response from the netizens: from bashing Tsuchiya for being “everywhere†and not skilled enough in dance to represent Japan in a music video of an international star to amazement and praise for her hard work and talent as well as showing a completely new side and breaking with her ‘asadora heroine’ image.

    INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TAO-CHAN:

    • Tao-chan used to be unable to pronounce her name properly because of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) so she had to undergo a surgery where the web of her tongue is cut a little to enable her to enunciate words better. (source: 151221 Shabekuri 007)

    • Tao-chan once went out with the rest of the Orange casts to a cafe during a rainy day and ended up voluntarily and neatly folding all five umbrellas before going inside. XD (source: '[ENG SUB] Oshareism | Yamazaki Kento's VCR for Tsuchiya Tao')

    • Tao-chan is known for posting looooooooong blog posts (and even her instagram captions are sometimes very long too! <3)

    • Takeuchi Ryoma once said that he got lost while running around Hamamatsu (Aozora Yell's filming location) and he had to follow Tao-chan's instructions to go back to the hotel. XD

(We'd update this post with more facts later. Feel free to share more interesting facts that you know about her below!)
