Uncanny valley is a feeling from seeing something or someone look human, act human, but there is just something off that cannot be described, only felt. When it’s a case of someone’s behavior that is off, it’s called a gut feeling. When it’s appearance based, it’s uncanny valley. So if people feel off but you don’t, it doesn’t mean they are misusing uncanny valley, it means you have a higher tolerance/they have lower tolerance. i actually came across his predebut pics before seeing his official pics from SM, and thinking he already had a very conventionally beautiful face. like, there's probably an aspect of nepotism involved because of his famous parents, but he was handsome enough to be scouted off the streets. the fact that SM felt the need to recommend nose work even to him is wild to me. first of all, he's just what, 18 years old? and secondly, he already had beautiful facial harmony with his natural features that can easily be elevated with makeup and styling alone. why the unnecessary nose job? it just blows my mind.

Anyway, here's Kai! Kai is yet another case who seems to have opted for the classic eyes and nose combo. With him as well predebut doesn't equate pre-surgery, as there are multiple predebut pictures of him during his trainee days where he already had work done. Let's get into it! The first thing that stood out it my were his eyes. Granted, he was probably only in middle school in the first photo but nevertheless we can tell that he used to have a lot of fat/extra tissue around his eyes. While some of that may have disappeared with age, I believe he's had both an upper and lower blepharoplasty to help with that. In addition to that he seems to have touched up his double eyelids as well to make them more defined and even. Finally his epicanthic fold seems far less prominent, indicating an epicanthoplasty. Kai had some work done on his nose as well. I admittedly cropped the second picture weirdly but you should still be able to tell that both his nose bridge and tip look more defined and narrower. I believe he's had both a rhinoplasty and a tip plasty to to make his nose more shapely. He most definitely does not have an implant: Kai's nose bridge is naturally rather bumpy, which is why we can pretty much rule out an implant. Instead he seems to occasionally opt for fillers to make it smoother. While this caused a near calamity in 2016, the last pic from 2019 shows his nose looking slightly bumpier again, indicating that the change was only due to temporary fillers which he seems to make use of every once in a while. Here's the summary of his procedures: 1. Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty 2. Double Eyelid Surgery 3. Epicanthoplasty 4. Rhinoplasty 5. Tip Plasty 6. Fillers for his nose brigde Please let me know if I missed anything!

Funny how we're once again talking about the lack of subtle plastic surgery in new SM groups considering the next member I'm analyzing is Chanyeol, master of subtle and natural looking procedures! Chanyeol has always been famed for his visuals, so much like Suho his face only needed very subtle tweaks here and there before he was ready to debut. Speaking of debut, Chanyeol already appeared in various media during his time as a trainee, meaning that for him as well predebut does not necessarily mean pre surgery. While Chanyeol never had particularly small eyes to begin with, his post-debut eyes are, well, huge. The above picture is too low quality to tell, but he did in fact already have double eyelids predebut, which have been deepened and heightened for his debut. On top of that I believe he's had two epicanthoplasties to his inner and outer corners, respectively. Another possibility that I'm not quite sure about is a lower blepharoplasty. I feel like the white of his eyes is much more exposed in the lower part, but that could also be due to cutting his outer corners. Interestingly enough his eyes are still slightly uneven (I believe the second pic is mirrored, sorry), which makes his procedures look a bit more natural. Finding good quality pictures of his before nose in profile was near impossible so I hope this will do. I believe Chanyeol had a sublte tip plasty; if you look closely his nose tip used to point downwards, whereas in the after picture it is ever so slightly upturned. Leaving the bump as is and not shaving it down or, god forbid, add an implant was a genius move in my opinion. It looks much more natural this way. Truly a blink-and-you'll-miss-it type of nose job. That's it for surgical changes I could pinpoint, however there is one more thing I am not sure about. I personally believe Chanyeol has veneers, but I have no way to verify this since it was impossible to find predebut pictures where he is smiling with his teeth showing. At least his incisors look kinda different from the rest of his teeth for me but I have no idea: What do you guys think? And if you have better pictures of his smile please do post them, I just kinda winged this because I don't have time to go looking for pictures of his smile right now lol. Here are my findings summed up: 1. Double Eyelids deepened 2. Epicanthoplasty, inner and outer 3. Possible Lower Blepharoplasty 4. Tip Plasty 5. Possible Veneers 6. Possible fillers And that's it for Chanyeol! I like that he didn't go overboard (although his eyes do look huge sometimes) and opted for an overall rather natural look and subtle enhancements. Next member will be Kai, possibly even today!

She's certainly pretty but if I were totally honest there are times when she looks a bit off. Especially her motuh area, imo her mouth now looks a bit too big for her face. Reminds me of Yunjin, whatever she did to her jaw is making her features look unbalanced.

I feel like Yuna’s “obsession” with wanting to be “cold” and “sexy” also has to do with ITZY’s image. Her “cute and warm” image worked during ITZY’s early releases but as their music became “edgier” Yuna probably felt that as the visual she had to become “edgier” too so that she wouldn’t be forgotten by the public and her company. This is exactly what happened with Wonyoung as well. Her “original” visuals were great for IZ*ONE’s concept but didn’t fit IVE’s whole “Highteen/Highglam” image which is why she had to go under the knife. Liz, who according to netizens no longer looks like a “real-life Barbie” had to be pushed to the back and will probably remain there until she pressures herself to lose weight in an unhealthy way due to constant hate so she can later be rewarded with love, more vocal parts and more brand deals after “successfully” dieting. Sullyoon rarely getting mentioned as a “nominee” in the whole “It-girl” race also comes from her not being the best visual fit to the NMIXX concept despite being regarded as a visual outside of NMIXX. Jisoo being “forgotten” by Blinks and YG is also partly due to her rather “soft and innocent” looks in a group that always goes full on girl crush giving her a hard time to stand out.

the really sad thing is that she's not Wonyoung level. Like Danielle is very very thin, no doubt, as skinny as it mostly gets for idols and most likely in the underweight area, but if you compare her body to Wonyoung's, especially thighs, wrists, shoulders, you can see how much skinnier Wonyoung actually is...that's insane. I really worry about her.

She’s definitely the thinnest in New Jeans, pretty much at Wonyoung levels of underweight. I usually don’t like to comment on people’s weight unless I’m worried about them from a medical point of view, and I do think it’s warranted in this situation. Women build most of their bone mass until the age of 20-25. From there, the bone mass you have is the bone mass you’ll have for life. Being so underweight and more than likely malnourished with low level of calcium in diet, they’re at a severe risk of osteoporosis when they’re older. Not to mention all of the other obvious/well known health risks of being underweight; cardiac problems, immunity issues, infertility etc. I just hope to dear god that these girls don’t have any of these complications in the future and live happy/healthy lives during and beyond their idol years. I hope someone is out their advocating for them and looking after them.

I get this feeling from Wonyoung. She’s so young but just like Yuna she was worshipped and put on an pedestal at a very young age. It makes sense they want to look and be pretty all the time, because they don’t know any better. But Wonyoung always touching her hair, posing a certain way, exaggerated facial expressions and acting a certain way always make me think she feels the need to be ‘on’ 24/7. And she’s so young. I kind of feel bad for her.

I quite much agree with this. I watched a few of Itzy's variety shows and while Yuna is a visibly pretty girl and highly doubt anyone unbiased can deny that, she always seems to put so much focus on her looks. Even before that stage with Wonyoung happened, as early as their debut. But obv for most idols feel more and more pressure the longer they are around in the industry and the more they are compared to others. She chose herself nicknames like "Mermaid", "Barbie" etc etc and in an interview with IU she kept saying that her blonde hair goes very well with the color pink and she looks gorgeous. And while this is all right, discussing how drop dead gorgeous you are over and over sounds the opposite of confident to me. I have been talking with my friends about this and they agreed upon how they "act the most confident" when they are the least confident. I used to go on about how beautiful I am back in the time that I was the least confident. As I grew up and gained genuine confidence, I learnt that confidence is silent. I highly doubt any of the ITZY members have the tomboy careless mindset as their concept promotes based on so many trivial moments I saw from them on variety shows. And honestly I don't mind because I get girl crushes on girly girls rather than edgy tomboys. For what's most certain I remember Chaeryeong saying she doesn't eat anything and just drinks water and have her supplement as breakfast and waits for her first meal until afternoon, Ryujin said that a lean body looks better when dancing so she lost weight and Yeji said she loved it when her Americans complimented her beauty when she went there to shot an MV. Afterall they are idols and taught to care about their image and realistically, many of the people going crazy over their tough and confident concept probably wouldnt even bother if they weren't slim and pretty.

I think that some of the work(and weight loss too) were first instigated by Izone's management, cause all members lost a good amount of weight and many got similar procedures, but Starship took over in order to perfect her image ahead of IVE's highly anticipated debut. Starship definitely went off board with the filler usage with more than a couple of idols, but they are really fixated on IVE's perfect visuals image and that is shown on how all the members had quite a lot of work done considering their ages. Gaeul is the member with the least amount of work done, but she recently showed up with a bloated over filled face, so I'm pretty sure these changes are instigated by the company, and after being told countless times how much better you would look with certain things done most people would cave in. Also, especially in recent years, Kpop is not about looking good, it's about looking as good as you possibly can and Wonyoung, or even Yuna, are the clear examples of that culture

I really really wish that Wonyoung didn’t let any ps touch her face. I can almost guarantee you she would have been just as beautiful now and even more so as she got older. Not saying she’s not beautiful right now, but I can’t help but worry about the consequences and upkeep she’ll have to do for the rest of her life. As to why she got it done, I imagine people around her influenced her to do it one way or another. She was also only 14, and having people put such importance on your looks and how pretty you are can bring a lot of pressure. She probably felt the need to keep it up or “level up”, so it made it easier to agree to all of those surgeries. I honestly just hope that she’s happy and isn’t having issues with how she looks now.

Hi ! I am new too ahah ! I don't know what the opinion is about Wonyoung's lip fillers but personally I wish she hadn't got them. Her face looks so refined and classy with thin lips. I really like her jaw/chin when it used to be wider (maybe because of her cheek fat).

Xiaotong still looks healthy in those photos imo. She's clearly thin/skinny but her proportions make her seem even thinner. Looking at her arms they look much healthier than Yuge's. There's no sign she's unhealthy at that weight.

^ in mild cases, like most connective tissue disorders, it often goes unnoticed (framed as simply "taller than average" and "myopia") and only gets diagnosed in adulthood or after heart issues arose. Troye Sivan, whom I have mentioned, just has the big stature and the very fragile joints, but for now, that doesn't stop him from dancing and singing on stage. Connective tissue disorders in general are quite common compared to other orphan diseases, yet underdiagnosed and not well known. It's very likely that many of these extremely flexible idols just have mild hEDS cases. I have EDS personally, which causes me the TMJD I talked about earlier, and I waited until 23 to be diagnosed. Coupled with extreme diets, and invasive bone surgeries (jaw), you get a very explosive cocktail. But agencies are not ready for this conversation yet.

To be fair, I have always wondered if Wonyoung doesn't have a mild form of Marfan syndrome, quite like Troye Sivan. She's always been much taller than the average for Korean girls of her age, and even back in her PD48 days, she had the characteristic elongated & emaciated hands and limbs of Marfan sufferers. If that's the case, she could eat 15000 kcal per day and still never put on weight, but her heart and joints must be closely monitored. However, for cases like Rosé and Lisa, who are of average heights and physical frames, a forced diet seems like the only possible option.
