Frequently Asked Question
Q: What does it mean by NCT group being an extension of NCT brand?
A: NCT is actually a brand created by SM to secure the expansion of the Hallyu wave; to not only succeed in the domestic market and Asia but also worldwide. Under the NCT brand, there exists six projects:
- SM STATION
- EDM label: ScreaM RECORDS
- The Digital Platform (everysing, everyshot, vyrl, etc.)
- Rookies Entertainment
- MCN (SM artists in Visual Radio Broadcasts, Web Dramas, etc.)
- A New Artist Group: NCT
Thus, NCT as a group is actually one of the actualization of NCT brand projects from SM Entertainment.
Q: Is the NCT subunits system different to other groups who promote in subunits?
A: Yes it is different. While other groups mainly promote as a whole group more than its subunits, in NCT the members will mainly promote as subunits. Also while most other groups have subunits with fixed members lineup, NCT will have both kinds of units: fixed and rotational.
Q: Will they ever debut/promote all of NCT members in one group?
A: NCT will possibly have collaborations between members of different subunits for some releases. However, they won't debut all the NCT members in one group as the concept of NCT is having limitless members.
Q: What does 'rotational unit' and 'fixed unit' mean?
Rotational unit means the members lineup of the unit won't be fixed and will change along with every comeback.
Confirmed rotational units so far: NCT U (promotional unit)
Fixed unit means the members lineup is fixed. This means every comeback this unit will include the same members who have been included since the unit's debut. Fixed units work pretty much the same with a conventional group. For the example: NCT 127, is consisted of these members: Taeyong, Taeil, WinWin, Yuta, Haechan, Mark, Jaehyun. Everytime NCT 127 makes a comeback, NCT 127 will include these same members to promote under this subunit name.
Confirmed fixed units so far: NCT 127
Q: What does 'promotional unit' mean for NCT U?
A: Promotional unit means this unit is specially made to promote NCT as a brand. In NCT U's case, this unit will have different genres and different concepts every comeback to appeal to listeners' different taste, and its members lineup will change along with it, matching the members' strength and how well they suit the promoted genre and concept. The member lineup for NCT U is rotational, and can include debuted and undebuted members. Think of it as a way to promote certain members and music without having a fixed unit's debut/comeback.
Q: Will all NCT units promote at Korea? What does it mean by NCT units being assigned to different countries?
A: No, only some NCT units will promote at Korea and target Korean market (Korean unit). For example, the fixed unit NCT 127 is based in South Korea. There will be other NCT units formed specifically to promote in different countries/regions. So far, the confirmed region-based units are Chinese unit, Japanese unit, South East Asian unit, and Latin America unit. It's also possible to have multiple subunits in one country/region.
Q: If a member is already included in one subunit, is it possible for him to join another subunit?
A: It is possible! Many NCT subunits will have overlapping members, which means it's possible for some members to join multiple subunits.
Example: Mark is a member of NCT 127, NCT Dream, and NCT U (first lineup)
Q: If a member debuts in the rotational unit, does that mean I might never see him again in the next comeback when it changes the members lineup?
A: It's a misconception! When a member debuts in the rotational unit X and isn't included in the next comeback of that particular unit, that doesn't mean you won't ever see him again. It's still highly possible to insert him in one of the fixed units and other units in the future. He's also able to join another comeback of the rotational unit X in the future, although he's not included in one or two or more promotional cycles of unit X. Besides, since this member technically has debuted through that rotational unit X, even after unit X promotional period ends and this particular member still hasn't joined any fixed subunits, it's highly possible for him to do some individual gigs or some collaboration gigs with other NCT members during this period.
Example: During this period, Ten did Hit The Stage, Doyoung MCed on Mnet shows with other NCT members, MCed for SMT, also appeared on a Baseball show.
Q: Will there be a graduation system for NCT members?
A: Until now SM hasn't said anything about this. But the fixed units won't have a graduation system as its members lineup will be fixed/the same in every comeback.
Q: What is the status of NCT Dream? Are they a rotational unit or a fixed unit?
A: There hasn't been any confirmation about that yet.
