A mixture of following my passion and taking up a course with job potential.

I did tons of research, visiting almost all public uni there was in my country. I couldn't afford making the wrong choice, I was under scholarship.

nothing is guaranteed after college, even if you take the realistic major.  you are better off pursuing your passion and try your best to become very good at that.

true but medicine has way more job opportunities and higher salaries than research based majors like biotechnology

both. catering to things i excelled at/had interest in as well as a path that offered a bit of security

i never had a single dream job eg "i wanna be a doctor/pilot/etcetc" or anything, so i just played to my strengths

did a lot of research, attended open days and spoke to as many people as i could. a scholarship offer also played a part in my decision

Materials engineering...most students aren't aware of the course yet since its new here but the industries in my country needed it. I decided it was the best for me since I liked physics and the competition was low.

A teacher suggested it, and then when a person with that degree went to our school for a carreer talk, I got more interested with it.

It wasn't my "dream" course since I wasn't really passionate about anything at the time haha

But it was a course I thought looked interesting and suited me, and I went with my gut and decided to do it even though I hadn't been considering it for long. I remember having a huge argument with my parents who didn't want me to do the course but I'm really glad I did it. In hindsight if I chose something I wasn't interested in I probably would have struggled with motivating myself to go to lectures, study, not drop out, etc

my uni was the only one that accepted me. All the other schools I applied to including the one in my home city rejected me. And I was initially an East Asian Studies major but switched to Japanese in my last year because most of my classes were Japan-focused and I wanted to take that Japanese Linguistics class over the Asian History course that took place in the same quarter around the same time (both classes are offered only once a year during a certain quarter) anyway.

My parents intially wanted me to become a doctor (well, they never said it directly but I felt it since they're both are dentists... ofc they want their daughter to be like them?). But looking at my Biology and Chemistry scores, I knew I couldn't make it. Plus I didn't want to be a doctor..

Then I read on a blog which tells everything about majors in university. I read them all one by one and found an interest in Industrial Engineering. And that was it!
